Chapter 11: The Labyrinth of Site Zero

The heavy steel blast doors of Site Zero hissed open inward, welcoming them into a sterile, white-walled corridor that smelled faintly of antiseptic and ozone. The doors slammed shut behind them with a definitive, mechanical lock, sealing off any possibility of retreat.

"It’s a kill box," Marcus muttered, instantly raising his sidearm and pressing his back against the reinforced wall. "They knew we were coming."

Julian didn't flinch. He stepped forward, his eyes fixed on the security camera mounted in the corner of the ceiling, its red lens tracking their every movement. "They wanted us to come. This facility was built to house the final phase of Project Janus. My mother and Richard want to finish what my father started."

"Which is what?" Elena asked, her boots clicking softly against the polished epoxy floor as she scanned the corridor intersections ahead. "Total cognitive control?"

"Worse," a familiar voice echoed down the hallway.

From the shadows of a cross-corridor stepped Richard Vance. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket anymore; his sleeves were rolled up, revealing forearms wrapped in medical gauze, and he held a heavy electronic tablet in one hand. His smile was thin and venomous.

"Not control, Elena," Richard chuckled, taking a slow step toward them. "Restoration. Your parents weren't victims of an accident, Julian. They were pioneers. They discovered how to wipe a human mind clean and rewrite it with absolute compliance. And tonight... we're going to use the ultimate test subject to secure our legacy."

Julian lunged forward, but before he could cross the distance, Richard tapped the tablet in his hand.

ZAP!

A hidden grid in the floor emitted a high-voltage electrical pulse, sending a shockwave through the ground that knocked Julian, Marcus, and Elena to their knees.

"Ah, ah, ah," Richard clicked his tongue, walking closer as Julian struggled to catch his breath. "Don't ruin the party just yet. Aunt Helena is waiting in the core lab. And she brought a very special guest for you to see."

Before Marcus could raise his weapon, two heavy stun drones dropped silently from the ceiling vents, discharging paralyzing darts straight into Marcus’s chest. The veteran detective slumped unconscious against the wall.

"Marcus!" Julian roared, trying to stand, but Richard’s guards were already on him, pinning his arms behind his back with brutal efficiency.

Richard turned his gaze to Elena, who was struggling against a guard who had grabbed her from behind. Richard reached out, gently lifting a lock of her hair to reveal the small circular surgical scar behind her ear.

"You know, Elena," Richard whispered softly, his eyes gleaming with mad satisfaction. "You look so much like your mother right before we wiped her memory fifteen years ago. Too bad you’re about to experience the exact same procedure."

As they dragged Julian and Elena down the brightly lit white corridor toward the facility's central core, a digital countdown timer began to flash red on the walls overhead, signaling that the facility's self-destruct sequence had just been initiated.
