Chapter 14: The Aftermath

The morning sun rose over the city, casting a warm, golden hue across the towering glass facade of Vance Global Industries. But the atmosphere inside the corporate headquarters was anything but peaceful.
Federal investigators, SEC agents, and police units filled the grand lobby, carrying boxes of evidence and serving subpoenas to remaining executives. The morning news broadcasts played on every screen in the financial district, flashing headlines about the massive corporate corruption scandal, the dismantling of Project Janus, and the dramatic downfall of the Vance family dynasty.
In a quiet, sunlit private office on the 70th floor, Julian stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the bustling city streets. He wore a crisp black suit, his expression solemn yet resolute.
The door opened softly, and Elena walked in, carrying a single manila folder. She wore a simple, elegant dark dress, entirely stripped of her hotel maid uniform, looking every bit the corporate executive she was genetically engineered—and now legally empowered—to become.
"The federal prosecutors have finished reviewing the decrypted ledgers," Elena said quietly, placing the folder on the mahogany desk. "Vance Global’s assets are being frozen and restructured into a public trust fund dedicated to victims of illegal corporate experimentation."
Julian turned away from the window and walked over to her. He looked down at the folder, then up into her dark, steady eyes. "And Richard?"
"Captured trying to board a cargo ship to South America," Elena replied with a faint, tight smile. "He’ll spend the rest of his life behind bars. As for your mother... forensic teams are still combing through the wreckage of Site Zero, but based on the structural telemetry, nobody could have survived that blast radius."
Julian nodded slowly. A heavy weight had lifted from his shoulders, yet a profound emptiness remained. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the gold-encrusted pocket watch his mother had left behind, placing it gently on the desk beside the folder.
"We survived," Julian said softly.
"We did," Elena agreed. She turned toward the door, hesitating for a fraction of a second before looking back over her shoulder. "By the way, Mr. Vance... your wedding catering company is still trying to bill you for the damaged venue."
Julian let out a genuine, low chuckle—the first real laugh he had shared in years. He stepped closer to her, closing the distance between them until he could smell the faint scent of jasmine in her hair.

"Let's cancel the catering," Julian murmured, taking her hand. "I think we’ve had enough drama for one lifetime."
Elena smiled, her fingers intertwining with his. But as they turned to leave the office together, neither of them noticed a small, encrypted notification light blinking softly on Julian’s discarded laptop screen—a single incoming data packet from an unknown IP address reading: “Subject 07 recovery protocol initiated. Phase three begins now.”
