## CHAPTER 9: THE PATERNITY SCANDAL

By eight in the morning, Kiora’s name was the most discussed name in the country.
News channels displayed the forged paternity report beside photographs of her wedding.
Commentators questioned her character.
Financial analysts speculated that she had seduced Adrian to gain access to Mercer Dominion.
Anonymous sources claimed she had multiple lovers.
Former classmates who barely remembered her gave interviews describing her as “secretive” and “ambitious.”
None of it was true.
Truth, Kiora quickly discovered, traveled more slowly than humiliation.
Adrian shut off the television.
“I’ll make a public statement.”
“No,” Kiora said.
“They’re calling you a fraud.”
“That is what Cassandra wants. She wants us emotional.”
“She told the world our daughter is not mine.”
Kiora looked at him.
“Do you doubt me?”
“Never.”
“Then the rest is strategy.”
Adrian paced toward the window.
After six months in captivity, he had returned to find his wife attacked, his grandfather shot, his company stolen, and his unborn child used as a weapon.
His control was beginning to fracture.
Kiora understood.
She also knew Cassandra understood it.
“She wants you to storm into headquarters,” Kiora said. “She will have security remove you on camera.”
“I am the chief operating officer.”
“You were.”
His jaw tightened.
“According to the board,” she added gently.
“The board she bought.”
“With forged evidence and the Meridian Circle behind her.”
Lena examined the paternity document.
“This report uses the name of a legitimate laboratory.”
“I never took a paternity test,” Kiora said.
“Did you have bloodwork at another clinic?”
“Routine prenatal screenings.”
“Someone could have substituted your sample.”
Adrian stopped pacing.
“Can we prove the report is false?”
“Yes,” Lena replied. “But even an immediate test will take time. Cassandra only needs the accusation to survive through today’s board vote.”
“What vote?”
“Her announcement omitted one detail. The board is meeting at four this afternoon to approve the transfer of Mercer Dominion’s shipping division to a Voss-controlled company.”
“The first stage of moving the twelve billion,” Kiora said.
Lena nodded.
“The golden share can stop it.”
Everyone looked at Kiora.
She placed a hand over her stomach.
“The Blackridge terminal recognized me.”
“But the company’s central system may require registration at headquarters,” Adrian said.
“Then we go.”
“You cannot walk into that building while Cassandra controls security.”
“She wants me afraid to appear.”
“She wants you arrested.”
“Then we make sure the world watches.”
Silas was awake by noon.
He reacted to the paternity scandal with one sentence.
“Vivienne has become predictable.”
Kiora sat beside his hospital bed.
“How is this predictable?”
“She destroys legitimacy before seizing property. She did the same to Elena.”
“What did she accuse my mother of?”
“Embezzlement. Mental instability. An affair.”
“Was any of it true?”
“No.”
“Did you defend her?”
Silas looked toward the window.
“Not quickly enough.”
Kiora understood the guilt in his voice.
“You believed Vivienne.”
“For three days.”
“That was enough.”
“Yes.”
He did not defend himself.
That made Kiora’s anger more difficult to hold.
Silas reached toward the bedside drawer and removed a small sealed envelope.
“I wrote this after Adrian disappeared.”
“What is it?”
“A declaration recognizing you as Elena’s lawful heir.”
“Will it help?”
“It establishes lineage, but the golden share is governed by a separate succession agreement. Vivienne removed the original from company records.”
“Where is the copy?”
“Your mother kept it.”
“At the Halcyon?”
“I believed so.”
“The archive burned.”
Silas’s eyes moved toward Adrian’s compass.
“Not everything.”
Adrian placed the microfilm on the bedside table.
“We found this inside the compass.”
Silas stared at it.
“Elena gave you that.”
“I thought you did.”
“I placed it around your neck after she saved you.”
Adrian sat slowly.
“Saved me from what?”
Silas’s expression darkened.
“Your biological father.”
Adrian had never known his birth parents.
Thomas Mercer adopted him after a private orphanage closed.
“What was his name?”
“Victor Voss.”
Kiora stared at Silas.
Adrian did not move.
“Victor is my father?”
“Yes.”
“That makes Cassandra…”
“Your half-sister.”
The room fell silent.
Kiora remembered Adrian admitting two teenage kisses.
His face revealed he had reached the same memory.
Silas quickly added, “Victor did not know you were his son until years later. Neither did Cassandra.”
“That does not improve the situation,” Adrian said faintly.
Kiora almost laughed despite everything.
Then the larger truth struck.
“Why did Elena save Adrian?”
“Victor had a relationship with a woman named Rose Calder. When Rose threatened to expose his crimes, he arranged an accident. Rose survived long enough to bring her child to Elena.”
“Me,” Adrian said.
“Elena hid you at the Halcyon. Vivienne discovered the child but did not know your identity. After Elena died, I arranged for Thomas to adopt you.”
“Did Victor kill my mother?”
“Yes.”
Adrian looked toward the wall.
Kiora reached for his hand.
His fingers were cold.
Silas continued.
“The final page of the Orion Ledger may not be a physical page. Elena divided the evidence so no one person could destroy it.”
“The blue ledger, her film, and Adrian’s microfilm,” Lena said.
“We lost part of the film in the fire.”
“Samuel may have another copy,” Silas replied.
Kiora looked at him.
“Is my father alive?”
“I do not know.”
The answer hurt more than she expected.
Silas turned toward Adrian.
“The microfilm should contain the legal succession agreement.”
Lena arranged for a secure scanner.
The image appeared on a laptop.
The document confirmed that Elena Mercer had transferred beneficial control of the golden share to her daughter, Kiora.
But the final section was encoded.
Adrian entered the numbers from the silver compass.
The text unlocked.
Three names appeared beneath the heading ORIGINAL MERIDIAN TRUSTEES.
Vivienne Mercer.
Victor Voss.
Benjamin Holloway.
Lena stared.
“My father was part of the Meridian Circle.”
Silas shook his head.
A fourth paragraph explained that Benjamin had withdrawn and secretly helped Elena document the organization.
The final line contained an instruction.
SUCCESSOR AUTHORIZATION MUST BE WITNESSED BY THE LIVING CHILD OF EACH WITHDRAWN TRUSTEE.
“The living child,” Kiora said.
“That means you,” Adrian told Lena.
“And Adrian,” Lena replied. “As Victor’s son.”
Silas nodded.
“The three of you can activate the golden share at headquarters.”
Kiora checked the time.
Two hours remained before the board vote.
They formed a plan.
Lena would secure federal observers.
Adrian would enter through the executive garage using an old biometric credential.
Kiora would arrive through the main entrance surrounded by reporters.
They wanted cameras.
They wanted witnesses.
At three forty-five, Kiora stepped from an armored car outside Mercer Dominion headquarters.
Hundreds of reporters shouted questions.
“Is Adrian the father?”
“Did you stage the courthouse attack?”
“Are you claiming to be Elena Mercer’s daughter?”
Kiora stopped before the glass doors.
She looked directly at the cameras.
“My daughter’s identity is not corporate evidence. My marriage is not public property. At four o’clock, I will present proof of who I am and what Cassandra Voss has done.”
She entered the lobby.
Security officers blocked her path.
Cassandra appeared on the mezzanine.
She wore a white suit now.
Pure, polished, carefully chosen.
“You are not authorized to enter,” Cassandra said.
Kiora looked upward.
“I own the share that can remove you.”
“You own nothing.”
Adrian and Lena emerged from the executive elevators.
The lobby erupted in camera flashes.
Cassandra’s expression tightened.
“You brought my brother,” she said.
Reporters shouted louder.
The revelation had not yet become public.
Adrian looked up at her.
“Victor is my biological father.”
Cassandra gripped the railing.
“You’re lying.”
Silas’s voice sounded through the lobby.
“He is not.”
Every head turned.
Silas entered in a wheelchair, escorted by Mara and Owen.
He looked pale but unbroken.
Cassandra stared at him.
“You should be in intensive care.”
“And you should be in jail.”
Kiora, Adrian, and Lena approached the central authorization console.
The board members watched from the upper level.
Kiora placed her hand on the scanner.
Adrian entered his compass code.
Lena inserted the star-shaped key.
The screen activated.
GOLDEN SHARE SUCCESSION REQUEST.
Three verification lights turned green.
Then a fourth light appeared.
FINAL MATERNAL AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.
Kiora looked at Silas.
“What does that mean?”
A woman’s voice answered from behind them.
“It means Elena anticipated everyone except me.”
Vivienne entered through the main doors surrounded by federal agents.
Lena’s face changed.
Those were not her agents.
Vivienne held up a legal document.
“I am Vivienne Mercer, Elena’s surviving mother.”
She looked at the console.
“And I formally reject Kiora’s succession.”
The screen turned red.
SUCCESSION DENIED.

Above them, Cassandra smiled.
The boardroom clock reached four.
