## CHAPTER 10: THE VOTE THAT STOLE AN EMPIRE

The board meeting began behind glass walls above the lobby.

Kiora stood at the authorization console as the red rejection message remained on-screen.

Vivienne had blocked the golden share succession.

The federal agents surrounding her held legitimate credentials, but Lena did not recognize any of them.

“Which division are you with?” Lena demanded.

The lead agent displayed his badge.

“Financial Crimes Intervention Unit.”

“That unit was dissolved two years ago.”

“Reconstituted under emergency authority.”

“Whose authority?”

A familiar voice answered from the mezzanine.

Judge Malcolm Reeve stepped into view.

“Mine.”

Lena’s face hardened.

“A federal judge does not command field agents.”

“I command these officers under a sealed national-security order.”

Silas laughed from his wheelchair.

“National security. The final refuge of wealthy criminals.”

Judge Reeve looked down at him.

“You have spent decades operating beyond normal corporate oversight.”

“And you have spent a decade selling court decisions.”

Reporters crowded against the lobby barriers.

Cameras captured every word.

Judge Reeve appeared unconcerned.

“The board meeting will proceed.”

Cassandra entered the glass conference room.

Nine directors sat around the table.

Five owed their positions to Victor and Vivienne.

Two had been threatened.

One had quietly supported Silas.

The final director, Patricia Wren, was Samuel Wren’s younger sister.

Kiora noticed her empty chair.

“Where is Patricia?” she asked.

Cassandra glanced through the glass.

“Absent.”

“She never misses a vote.”

“She submitted a proxy.”

“To whom?”

“Me.”

Adrian looked toward Silas.

“That gives Cassandra six votes.”

“Enough to approve the sale,” Silas replied.

Kiora turned toward Vivienne.

“You took Patricia.”

Vivienne smiled faintly.

“Such an ugly accusation.”

The board secretary began reading the proposal.

The shipping division, worth nearly fifteen billion dollars, would be sold to Meridian Strategic Holdings for less than one-third of its value.

After the sale, its assets could be divided among offshore companies.

Kiora watched years of theft become official language.

“You don’t need the golden share to stop the meeting,” Adrian whispered.

“What do you suggest?”

“Remove Cassandra’s majority.”

“How?”

“Prove one proxy is invalid.”

“Patricia’s.”

Adrian nodded.

“Find her.”

Kiora looked toward Owen.

He had already understood.

He stepped away and began speaking into his phone.

The board secretary called for discussion.

Cassandra stood.

“Mercer Dominion faces instability caused by former executives, fraudulent claimants, and criminal interference.”

Her eyes moved toward Kiora.

“This sale protects shareholders.”

Silas raised his voice.

“It protects thieves.”

Judge Reeve signaled the agents.

Two moved toward Silas.

Reporters began shouting.

Kiora stepped between them.

“If you arrest a wounded eighty-one-year-old man for criticizing a board meeting, every camera in this lobby will show it.”

The agents stopped.

Vivienne studied her.

“You are learning.”

“I learned from the people who survived you.”

Cassandra called for the vote.

The first five directors voted yes.

The sixth vote would be Patricia’s proxy.

Owen returned.

“Patricia Wren’s phone was last detected near the old east freight terminal.”

“That property belongs to Voss Logistics,” Adrian said.

“How far?”

“Fifteen minutes.”

“The vote will be over in two.”

Kiora looked toward the reporters.

Then toward the fire alarm.

Adrian followed her gaze.

“No.”

“You were the one who suggested stopping the vote.”

“Not by evacuating a forty-story building.”

Kiora walked toward the lobby podium.

Cassandra watched suspiciously.

Kiora took the microphone used for press announcements.

“Patricia Wren, a member of the Mercer Dominion board, is missing.”

The room erupted.

Cassandra struck the table.

“Turn off that microphone.”

Kiora continued.

“Her vote is currently being cast through a proxy controlled by Cassandra Voss. Until Patricia is found, any transaction approved by this board may be based on coercion.”

Reporters began broadcasting the allegation.

Share prices reacted immediately.

The financial ticker on lobby screens showed Mercer Dominion dropping four percent.

Cassandra’s face twisted.

“You are destroying the company you claim to own.”

“I am preventing you from selling it.”

Judge Reeve moved toward the console.

“End the transmission.”

Lena blocked him.

“You touch that system and I will arrest you.”

“On what charge?”

“Obstruction, evidence tampering, judicial corruption, and impersonating a man with integrity.”

Reeve’s smile vanished.

The board secretary announced Patricia’s proxy vote.

“Yes.”

The sale passed six to three.

Cassandra exhaled.

The lobby screen changed.

TRANSACTION APPROVED.

Silas closed his eyes.

Vivienne turned toward Kiora.

“This is what power looks like. Not inheritance. Not sentiment. Timing.”

Kiora stared at the screen.

The sale required regulatory processing.

It was approved, but the money had not moved yet.

“How long before the transfer completes?” she asked Adrian.

“Ninety minutes.”

“Then we still have time.”

Vivienne’s smile faded slightly.

Kiora returned to the console.

The maternal rejection remained active.

“Why did Elena include maternal authorization?”

Silas looked toward Vivienne.

“She did not.”

Vivienne’s face changed.

“What?”

Silas leaned forward in his wheelchair.

“The final authorization is not genetic.”

Kiora looked at the wording.

FINAL MATERNAL AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

Silas continued.

“Elena never trusted blood alone. She defined motherhood in the succession agreement.”

“Who did she name?” Kiora asked.

A voice came through the lobby speakers.

“I believe she named me.”

Mara stood inside the security control room above the entrance.

Her injured arm rested in a sling.

With her other hand, she held an access card.

Vivienne stared upward.

“Mara.”

“You should have made certain I died at Blackridge.”

Mara entered the elevator and descended to the lobby.

“She was your servant,” Vivienne told Silas.

“She raised Elena after you abandoned her for the Meridian Circle,” Silas replied.

Mara approached the console.

“Elena named me her maternal guardian when Kiora was born.”

Kiora’s throat tightened.

Mara placed her hand on the second scanner.

The screen analyzed her fingerprint.

MATERNAL GUARDIAN VERIFIED.

Vivienne stepped forward.

One of her agents raised a weapon.

Lena drew hers.

The lobby froze.

Kiora completed the retinal scan.

Adrian entered the compass code.

Lena turned the star key.

Mara spoke the final authorization.

“I recognize Kiora Elena Mercer as the lawful successor.”

The screen turned gold.

SUCCESSION COMPLETE.

Kiora felt every camera focus on her.

The console displayed a list of powers.

VETO BOARD TRANSACTION.

REMOVE EXECUTIVE OFFICER.

FREEZE CORPORATE ASSETS.

DISSOLVE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE.

Kiora pressed the first command.

The shipping sale changed from APPROVED to SUSPENDED.

Cassandra stared through the glass.

“No.”

Kiora selected REMOVE EXECUTIVE OFFICER.

A list of names appeared.

CASSANDRA VOSS—ACTING CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER.

Kiora pressed REMOVE.

The conference-room doors unlocked automatically.

Security access transferred to the golden share holder.

Owen’s team entered.

Cassandra backed away.

“You cannot do this.”

Kiora looked up at her.

“You spent months telling everyone I owned nothing.”

The screen flashed.

CASSANDRA VOSS TERMINATED.

All building access revoked.

Corporate accounts frozen.

Cassandra’s phone stopped working.

The lights inside her private office went dark.

Employees throughout the building received the announcement.

Vivienne turned toward Judge Reeve.

“Get me out.”

He signaled his agents.

But Lena’s phone rang.

She answered, listened, and smiled.

“The real federal task force has arrived.”

Sirens surrounded the headquarters.

The false agents began lowering their weapons.

Judge Reeve moved toward a side exit.

Adrian blocked him.

“Going somewhere?”

Vivienne did not panic.

She leaned toward Kiora.

“You think freezing one company defeats the Meridian Circle?”

“No.”

“Then you understand this is not over.”

Kiora held up the blue ledger.

“It ends when every name becomes public.”

Vivienne’s eyes moved toward the book.

“The final page is already public.”

“What?”

Vivienne nodded toward the financial screens.

The market ticker disappeared.

A new video filled every display in the building.

Samuel Wren appeared on-screen.

Kiora recognized her father from the photographs.

He was alive.

His face was bruised.

A man behind the camera held a weapon against his head.

Samuel looked directly into the lens.

“Kiora, do not release the Orion evidence.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Dad.”

Samuel continued.

“If you expose the Meridian Circle, they will activate Protocol Ash.”

The video cut to satellite images of three Mercer Dominion hospitals, a shipping port, and a crowded passenger terminal.

Numbers counted down beside each location.

One hour.

Vivienne smiled.

“Freeze the accounts if you wish.”

May you like

She looked toward the countdown.

“But if the money does not move, thousands of people die.”
