## CHAPTER 17: THE FALL OF MERCER TOWER

Smoke filled the Mercer Tower lobby.

Employees pounded against locked glass doors.

Emergency alarms screamed.

The elevators stopped.

Fire shutters descended over the stairwells, trapping hundreds of people inside the forty-story building.

Kiora stood at the golden-share console while the screen continued demanding authorization for the twelve-billion transfer.

Vivienne had transformed the headquarters into another version of Protocol Ash.

A monument designed to kill its occupants.

Owen’s voice came through Kiora’s earpiece.

“We entered the television studio. Vivienne is gone. Cassandra is alive.”

“Get her out.”

“Underground exits are sealed.”

Adrian spoke next.

“We’re following Vivienne into the broadcast tunnel.”

“No. Help the employees.”

“Lena and Owen can handle the evacuation.”

“I need you alive.”

“And I need the person controlling the locks.”

The connection crackled.

Kiora wanted to order him back.

Instead, she remembered her own demand.

No more decisions disguised as protection.

“Find her,” Kiora said. “Then come back.”

“Always.”

The line ended.

Kiora focused on the console.

Temporary trustee controls belonged to Vivienne.

But Kiora remained the previous owner, genetic successor, and required transfer authorizer.

The system contained overlapping authority.

Elena had designed it that way.

“Kiora,” Mara said through the secure network. “The analog command room can open one section at a time.”

“Start with the lower floors.”

“We need trustee approval.”

“Can I override it?”

“Not directly.”

Silas’s voice came through the line.

He was alive.

“Silas!”

“I am here.”

“What happened at the clinic?”

“Victor fired into the incubator. The bullet missed the child.”

“And Samuel?”

“Wounded, but conscious.”

Relief nearly brought Kiora to her knees.

“Victor?”

“Restrained.”

“Can you access the trust?”

“The child’s genetic scanner was damaged.”

“Then how do we remove Vivienne?”

“We confirm a legal guardian.”

“Without a court?”

“Cassandra can issue a maternal declaration.”

“She is in the tunnel.”

“Then find her.”

Kiora called Owen.

“We need Cassandra at a secure terminal.”

“We’re moving toward the lower studio exit.”

A woman coughed nearby.

Kiora turned.

Employees were collapsing from smoke.

She could not wait.

“What happens if I authorize the transfer?” she asked Mara.

“The system may release the building locks after Vivienne receives confirmation.”

“May?”

“She could keep them closed.”

“What happens if I reject it?”

“Nothing changes.”

Kiora looked at the transfer destination.

MERIDIAN STRATEGIC HOLDINGS.

A bank identifier appeared beneath it.

She recognized part of the code from the blue ledger.

“Elena created that account.”

Silas paused.

“What?”

“The same identifier appears beside her name in the ledger.”

Mara searched the scanned pages.

“Kiora is right.”

“The destination is not Vivienne’s account,” Kiora said. “It was originally Elena’s evidence fund.”

Adrian’s voice returned.

“Vivienne may have redirected ownership.”

“Or she thinks she did.”

Kiora opened the account details.

Beneficial owner information was encrypted.

She entered the phrase her mother had used for Protocol Ash.

No shadow owns the morning.

The account unlocked.

OWNER: ELENA MERCER JUSTICE TRUST.

SUCCESSOR: KIORA ELENA MERCER.

Vivienne had ordered twelve billion dollars transferred into an account Kiora legally controlled.

“She never knew Elena changed the ownership,” Kiora said.

Silas laughed softly.

“My daughter always did prefer delayed revenge.”

Kiora authorized the transfer.

Twelve billion dollars left Mercer Dominion.

Vivienne received the notification.

The building locks released.

Fire shutters rose.

Employees flooded toward the exits.

Mara activated emergency ventilation.

Federal teams entered the lower floors.

Kiora immediately froze the Justice Trust.

The money was safe.

Vivienne had received nothing.

“She will know,” Silas warned.

“Good.”

Kiora took the case and entered the stairwell.

Adrian and Owen were below the building.

Cassandra needed to issue the guardianship declaration.

And Vivienne was still free.

Kiora descended into the smoke.

On the tenth floor, she passed firefighters guiding employees upward.

At the basement level, Lena met her.

“Cassandra is in the control room.”

“Vivienne?”

“Heading toward the river tunnel.”

“Adrian?”

“Following her.”

They reached the control room.

Cassandra sat before a medical terminal.

Her hands trembled.

“What do I have to sign?”

“A declaration naming a temporary guardian for the baby,” Lena said.

“Me.”

“The system may reject you because you are medically compromised and under criminal indictment.”

Cassandra’s face hardened.

“Then who?”

She looked at Kiora.

The answer existed between them.

Kiora stepped closer.

“You carried him.”

“You are his genetic mother.”

“That does not erase what you did.”

“No.”

“It also does not erase what Victor did to you.”

Cassandra looked away.

“If I name you, will you take him from me?”

“I don’t know what permanent custody should look like.”

“That is not reassuring.”

“It is honest.”

Cassandra’s eyes filled.

“I love him.”

“I believe you.”

“I did not expect to.”

“Neither of us expected any of this.”

A deep explosion sounded from the tunnel.

Kiora looked toward the door.

Adrian was down there.

Cassandra placed her hand on the scanner.

“I name Kiora Mercer temporary guardian of my son until a family court can determine his permanent care.”

The system processed the declaration.

MATERNAL CONSENT VERIFIED.

LEGAL GUARDIAN: KIORA ELENA MERCER.

TRUSTEE CONTROL TERMINATED.

GOLDEN SHARE RETURNED TO KIORA MERCER.

Every system in the building changed.

Kiora opened all emergency exits.

She locked the river tunnel gates ahead of Vivienne.

Then she ran toward the tunnel.

Lena and Owen followed.

The underground passage extended toward the river.

Water leaked through the old brick walls.

They found Adrian near a collapsed section, bleeding from his forehead.

Kiora dropped beside him.

“I’m fine.”

“That sentence has lost all meaning.”

“Vivienne went ahead.”

“Can you stand?”

“With appropriate admiration.”

She helped him up.

They continued toward the river gate.

Vivienne stood at the end of the tunnel.

The steel exit was locked.

She held a pistol against Samuel Wren’s chest.

Kiora stared.

“How did he get here?”

Vivienne smiled.

“Silas rescued the baby. I took the father.”

Samuel’s side was bandaged from Victor’s gunshot.

He looked barely conscious.

“Open the gate,” Vivienne ordered.

“No,” Kiora said.

“I will kill him.”

“You might.”

Samuel lifted his head.

“Don’t.”

Vivienne pressed the gun harder.

Kiora looked at her grandmother.

“You built your entire life around making people choose who dies.”

“It is the purest measurement of loyalty.”

“No. It is the excuse of a coward who cannot earn loyalty.”

Vivienne’s eyes narrowed.

Kiora held up the blue ledger.

“The twelve billion is in Elena’s Justice Trust.”

For the first time, Vivienne looked genuinely shocked.

“You’re lying.”

“My mother changed the account owner.”

Adrian smiled despite the blood on his face.

“You financed your own prosecution.”

Vivienne’s grip shifted.

Samuel struck her wrist.

The gun fired.

Lena shot Vivienne in the shoulder.

Samuel collapsed.

Kiora ran to him.

Vivienne fell against the locked gate.

Owen took her weapon and restrained her.

Samuel’s shirt darkened with blood.

“Dad.”

Kiora pressed both hands against the wound.

He looked at her.

“I always wanted to hear you call me that.”

“You’re going to hear it again.”

“I’m sorry I waited.”

“Save your breath.”

He smiled weakly.

“You sound like Elena.”

Sirens approached through the tunnel.

Samuel’s eyes began to close.

Kiora held him tightly.

“Stay with me.”

Vivienne laughed from the floor.

Even wounded, even defeated, she still possessed one final cruelty.

“You think the ledger will convict me?”

Kiora looked toward her.

Vivienne nodded at Samuel.

“He knows why it cannot.”

Samuel’s face changed.

“What is she talking about?” Kiora asked.

He tried to answer.

Blood touched his lips.

“The final page…”

“Where is it?”

“Inside…”

His eyes closed.

“Inside what?”

The medics arrived and pulled Kiora away.

Samuel was rushed toward the surface.

Vivienne smiled through the pain.

“The final page was never hidden in a grave, a book, or a film.”

“Where is it?”

“Inside the child.”

Kiora stared at her.

May you like

Vivienne looked toward the city above them.

“Elena encoded the Meridian Circle’s names into Adrian’s genetic record.”
