## CHAPTER 14: THE CHILD BORN UNDER SIEGE

Cassandra’s labor progressed with terrifying speed.

The headquarters medical suite was too exposed.

St. Catherine’s Hospital had already been infiltrated.

Every private clinic on Cassandra’s list was connected to Victor.

Dr. Shaw recommended a secure military hospital twenty miles outside the city.

Owen organized the convoy.

Kiora climbed into the ambulance beside Cassandra despite Adrian’s objection.

“You’re also at risk for premature labor,” he said.

“She is alone.”

“She tried to kill you yesterday.”

“And today she warned us.”

“That does not erase yesterday.”

“No. But leaving her terrified will not repair it either.”

Cassandra gripped the ambulance rail as another contraction hit.

“I do not need her kindness.”

Kiora looked at her.

“Good. Because I am doing this for the baby.”

Adrian rode in the armored vehicle behind them.

Federal escorts surrounded the ambulance.

Lena and Mara remained at headquarters to interrogate Vivienne and examine the clinic files.

Silas coordinated security from the command center.

Samuel traveled with Adrian.

The convoy entered the northern highway.

Rain began falling.

Dr. Shaw monitored Cassandra.

“The medication has caused hyperstimulation. We need to slow the contractions.”

“Will he survive?” Cassandra asked.

“We are doing everything possible.”

“That is not an answer.”

“No,” Dr. Shaw said gently. “It isn’t.”

Cassandra turned toward Kiora.

“If he dies, it is because I went back to headquarters.”

“It is because Victor poisoned you.”

“I brought the ring.”

“You were trying to save him.”

“I was trying to save myself too.”

“That does not make the decision worthless.”

Cassandra laughed weakly.

“You really are Elena’s daughter.”

“You barely knew her.”

“I remember her.”

Kiora stared.

“What?”

“I was four. My father took me to the Halcyon. Elena found me hiding beneath a table.”

“Why were you hiding?”

“My father was angry. I had spilled something on one of his documents.”

Cassandra’s voice shook as another contraction passed.

“Elena sat on the floor beside me. She gave me a silver candy wrapper and folded it into a bird.”

Kiora’s throat tightened.

Her mother used to fold silver birds for her.

“She told me frightened people sometimes become cruel because cruelty feels stronger than fear.”

Cassandra looked toward the ambulance ceiling.

“I spent my whole life proving her right.”

The convoy suddenly slowed.

Adrian’s voice came through the radio.

“Road obstruction ahead.”

A tanker truck had overturned across the highway.

Owen ordered the driver to take the emergency access road.

The ambulance turned toward a forest route.

Dr. Shaw looked at the monitor.

“We may not reach the hospital.”

“How long?” Kiora asked.

“Twenty minutes at best.”

Cassandra cried out.

The baby’s heart rate dropped.

“We need to deliver now.”

“Inside an ambulance?”

“We no longer have a choice.”

The vehicle stopped beneath an overpass.

Security formed a perimeter.

Dr. Shaw converted the rear compartment into an emergency delivery room.

Kiora held Cassandra’s hand.

“I can’t do this,” Cassandra whispered.

“Yes, you can.”

“I don’t want him to be born like this.”

“He only needs to be born alive.”

Another contraction came.

Cassandra screamed.

The sound was raw, stripped of pride and calculation.

Kiora stayed beside her.

Outside, gunfire erupted.

Owen’s voice came over the radio.

“Ambush!”

Dr. Shaw did not look up.

“Keep her focused.”

Kiora heard bullets strike the armored side of the ambulance.

Adrian shouted orders outside.

The vehicle shook.

Cassandra looked toward the doors.

“They found us.”

“They are not getting inside.”

“My father wants the baby.”

“He will not have him.”

“How do you know?”

“Because everyone outside that door knows exactly what he is fighting for.”

Dr. Shaw checked the baby’s position.

“Cassandra, you need to push.”

“I can’t.”

“You can.”

Kiora leaned closer.

“Look at me.”

Cassandra did.

“You attacked me because you believed I was alone.”

Shame crossed Cassandra’s face.

Kiora tightened her hand.

“You are not alone now.”

Cassandra began to cry.

Then she pushed.

Outside, the gunfire intensified.

A blast shook the road.

The rear doors bent inward but held.

Adrian’s voice shouted Kiora’s name.

“I’m here!” she called back.

Dr. Shaw worked quickly.

“One more push.”

Cassandra screamed.

A small cry filled the ambulance.

For one perfect second, everything else disappeared.

The bullets.

The rain.

The history between them.

A premature baby boy lay in Dr. Shaw’s hands.

“He’s breathing,” the doctor said.

Cassandra sobbed.

Kiora covered her mouth.

The boy was tiny.

Dark hair covered his head.

His fingers opened and closed against the cold air.

Dr. Shaw placed him in a portable warming unit and began respiratory support.

Cassandra reached toward him.

“My son.”

Kiora felt a movement inside her own stomach.

Her daughter responding to the sound.

The gunfire stopped.

The rear doors opened.

Adrian appeared, soaked from the rain, blood on his sleeve.

Kiora’s heart stopped.

“Are you hurt?”

“Not mine.”

His gaze moved toward the warming unit.

Dr. Shaw looked at him.

“He is stable for transport.”

Adrian stared at the baby.

His biological son.

Cassandra’s carried child.

Emotion moved across his face, too complex to name.

Cassandra watched him.

“You can touch him.”

Adrian hesitated.

Then he placed one finger through the access opening.

The baby’s hand closed around it.

Adrian looked toward Kiora.

She saw love there.

And fear.

And a question neither of them could answer yet.

Owen entered.

“We captured three attackers. The others escaped.”

“Victor?” Adrian asked.

“Not present.”

“Who ordered the ambush?”

“One attacker carried a Meridian Circle insignia.”

Cassandra looked toward him.

“My father never uses the Circle’s symbol.”

“Then this wasn’t Victor,” Kiora said.

Adrian understood.

“Vivienne.”

Silas called through the secure line.

His voice was urgent.

“Return immediately.”

“We have a premature newborn,” Adrian said.

“The military hospital is compromised.”

“How?”

“Vivienne’s interrogation room is empty.”

Everyone stared.

“What happened?” Kiora asked.

“Lena Holloway released her.”

Kiora’s blood ran cold.

“Why?”

“She received a message showing her mother tied to a chair.”

Vivienne had another hostage.

Another family manipulated through fear.

Silas continued.

“Vivienne accessed the golden-share system before leaving.”

“I thought only I could authorize it.”

“You are the owner. She still knows the original emergency codes.”

“What did she do?”

“She initiated a succession challenge.”

“On whose behalf?”

Silas was silent.

Kiora looked toward the newborn.

Vivienne needed a blood descendant of Elena to challenge Kiora.

The newborn boy carried Kiora’s genetic material.

“She used Cassandra’s baby,” Kiora whispered.

“Yes.”

“But he was born minutes ago.”

“The clinic transmitted fetal genetic records before Cassandra escaped.”

“Can she take the share?”

“Not immediately. A judicial hearing is required.”

“With Judge Reeve arrested?”

“She selected another judge.”

“Who?”

Silas’s answer was almost a whisper.

“Your father.”

Kiora looked toward Samuel.

His face had turned white.

“I am not a judge,” he said.

Silas continued through the phone.

“No. But thirty years ago, Vivienne registered Samuel Wren as the private arbitrator of Mercer succession disputes.”

Samuel stared at the newborn.

“If I refuse?”

“The succession system treats refusal as approval of the challenger.”

Kiora understood the trap.

To protect her golden share, Samuel would have to rule against his own newborn grandson.

The hearing was scheduled for sunrise.

Less than two hours away.

Then the baby’s monitor sounded an alarm.

Dr. Shaw looked down.

“He’s losing oxygen.”

At the same moment, Cassandra’s eyes rolled back.

Her blood pressure collapsed.

The ambulance became a storm of medical orders.

Kiora held the newborn’s tiny hand while Adrian tried to keep Cassandra conscious.

May you like

Two lives were failing at once.

And before sunrise, Samuel would be forced to decide which one could inherit an empire.
