## CHAPTER 16: THE CHOICE NO MOTHER SHOULD FACE

The neonatal room went dark.

The newborn’s monitor fell silent.

Kiora ran toward the glass door, but the electronic lock refused her fingerprint.

“Manual release!” Dr. Shaw shouted.

Adrian grabbed a metal chair and struck the glass.

It did not break.

Silas’s voice came through the emergency speaker.

“The clinic systems transferred to Vivienne.”

“The baby cannot breathe without support,” Kiora said.

“There is a mechanical lock beneath the right control panel.”

Owen tore the panel from the wall.

Wires sparked.

He found a red lever and pulled.

The neonatal door opened.

Dr. Shaw rushed inside.

She disconnected the powered respirator and began using a manual ventilation bag.

The baby’s chest rose.

Once.

Twice.

His heart rate returned.

Kiora stood beside the incubator, pressing one hand against the glass.

“You’re safe,” she whispered, though she had no authority to promise it.

The clinic’s emergency lights activated.

Adrian looked toward Samuel.

“You transferred control.”

“I saved Cassandra’s life.”

“You gave Vivienne the entire company.”

“I know.”

Adrian’s anger filled the room.

Kiora stepped between them.

“He had seconds.”

“She was already moving Cassandra.”

“How could he know?”

“He could have rejected the challenge.”

“And watched Cassandra die?”

Adrian looked toward the newborn.

Kiora lowered her voice.

“That child has already been used as a weapon by everyone. I will not begin his life by deciding the woman who carried him was expendable.”

Adrian’s anger dissolved into exhaustion.

“You’re right.”

Samuel sat heavily.

“I should have found another way.”

“We still can,” Kiora said.

Lena checked the succession rules.

“Vivienne’s control is temporary.”

“For how long?” Silas asked.

“Until the child’s legal guardian is confirmed by a family court.”

“Cassandra is the gestational mother,” Kiora said.

“And you are the genetic mother,” Lena replied. “Adrian is the genetic father. Victor forged every surrogacy agreement. There is no valid contract.”

“Which means custody is undecided.”

“Yes.”

“And Vivienne only controls the share as trustee while no guardian is confirmed.”

Adrian understood.

“If a court appoints a guardian, Vivienne loses control.”

“Unless the guardian chooses to keep her.”

“She has Cassandra.”

“And Judge Reeve’s network still reaches other judges.”

Kiora looked toward the newborn.

“We do not need a court immediately.”

Silas appeared on a mobile video screen as Mara wheeled him into headquarters’ analog control room.

“What are you thinking?”

“Elena wrote the succession agreement. She would never give a temporary trustee unlimited power.”

Silas smiled faintly.

“She did not.”

“What limitation exists?”

“The trustee cannot authorize transfers involving more than ten percent of company assets without approval from the previous golden-share owner.”

Kiora looked at the frozen shipping sale.

“Vivienne still needs me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why take control?”

“To command security systems, erase evidence, and force you to approve the transfer.”

A message appeared on every clinic screen.

Vivienne’s face filled the displays.

“Kiora, bring the blue ledger and Elena’s microfilm to Mercer Tower.”

“What about Cassandra?”

“She is alive.”

“Show me.”

The image changed.

Cassandra sat inside the old television studio, restrained but conscious.

A medical line remained attached to her arm.

“You have one hour,” Vivienne said. “Approve the twelve-billion transfer and surrender the evidence.”

“Then you release Cassandra?”

“And return administrative control.”

“You expect me to trust you.”

“No. I expect you to protect the mother of your son.”

The screens went black.

Adrian shook his head.

“You are not going.”

“We need Cassandra for the guardianship ruling.”

“We can rescue her.”

“In less than an hour from a building Vivienne controls?”

Owen examined the studio plans.

“There are old broadcast tunnels beneath the structure.”

“Vivienne knows every Mercer tunnel,” Mara said through the secure line.

Samuel stepped forward.

“She does not know all of mine.”

Everyone looked at him.

“I built a private passage from the Halcyon utility network to the television studio after Elena began recording evidence.”

“The Halcyon burned,” Adrian said.

“The lower tunnel survived.”

A plan formed.

Kiora would arrive publicly with the ledger and microfilm.

Adrian, Owen, and Lena would enter through Samuel’s tunnel.

Silas and Mara would work from the analog command center to interrupt Vivienne’s security control.

Samuel would remain with the newborn and Dr. Shaw.

Kiora changed into a dark maternity dress and protective vest.

Adrian helped fasten it.

His hands rested briefly on her stomach.

“You do not have to prove anything by going.”

“I’m not proving anything.”

“Then why?”

“Because Vivienne believes love makes people predictable. She used Daniel’s family, Lena’s mother, Cassandra’s baby, and my father.”

“She will use me.”

Kiora looked at him.

“Yes.”

“What will you do when she does?”

“Trust you to survive.”

He touched her face.

“That is a dangerous amount of confidence.”

“You returned from the dead. My expectations have changed.”

He kissed her.

Not desperately.

Not like goodbye.

Like a promise to return.

Kiora arrived at Mercer Tower with twenty-seven minutes remaining.

News crews surrounded the building.

She carried a case containing the blue ledger and a copy of the microfilm.

The originals remained hidden with Samuel.

Vivienne appeared on the lobby screens.

“Place the case on the scanner.”

“Show me Cassandra.”

A camera activated inside the television studio.

Cassandra sat beneath bright lights.

Her face was pale.

“I’m here,” she said.

“Are you hurt?”

“Vivienne gave me medication.”

“Can you stand?”

“I think so.”

Vivienne moved into the frame.

“Approve the transfer.”

Kiora approached the golden-share console.

Temporary control belonged to the baby’s trust, but the system still recognized her veto authority.

She placed her hand on the scanner.

The twelve-billion transfer appeared.

APPROVAL REQUIRED FROM PREVIOUS OWNER.

“Before I authorize it,” Kiora said, “I want Victor.”

Vivienne’s expression changed.

“I do not have him.”

“He works for you.”

“He no longer works for anyone.”

“Then where is he?”

“I suspect he is going after the child.”

Kiora’s blood chilled.

She called Samuel.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

The video feed from the clinic appeared on the lobby screens.

Victor walked through the neonatal room holding a gun.

Dr. Shaw lay unconscious on the floor.

Samuel stood between Victor and the incubator.

Victor raised the weapon.

Vivienne watched calmly.

“I warned you,” she said.

Kiora looked toward the authorization button.

Approve the transfer and Vivienne might stop Victor.

Refuse and Samuel and the baby could die.

She pressed her hand against the scanner.

Then another figure entered the clinic video.

Silas Mercer.

He stood behind Victor with no cane and no wheelchair.

Victor turned in shock.

Silas struck him across the arm.

The gun fired.

The incubator glass shattered.

The video went black.

Kiora screamed.

At the same moment, explosions shook the lower floors of Mercer Tower.

Smoke poured into the lobby.

Vivienne’s security system announced an evacuation.

But every exit remained locked.

Her voice came through the speakers.

“If I cannot own the empire, no one will leave it alive.”
