Chapter 9 - THE BLOOD THAT LIED

News of Dr. Malcolm Reese's death reached the media before sunrise.

By 8:30 a.m., reporters were calling it an unrelated home invasion.

By 8:45, an anonymous source had told three networks that Reese had once treated Grace for a psychiatric condition.

By 9:00, the lie had become a headline.

Nathan watched the television in Daniel's office and understood exactly what Conrad was doing.

Every person who could contradict the official story would either disappear, die, or be discredited before they spoke.

Grace was still being held because the prosecutor refused to release her until the garage attack was reviewed.

Victoria remained in a private hospital suite under armed security.

Conrad had not been arrested.

Rourke had vanished.

Evan was cooperating, but every statement he gave came with a confession of his own crimes, making him easy to attack as an unreliable witness.

Nathan had lost operational control of Cole Holdings.

And now someone was trying to convince the public that Grace had been unstable long before any of them met.

Daniel muted the television.

"The independent DNA lab has the samples."

Nathan looked at the clock.

"How long?"

"They are running an expedited parentage panel and a separate identity verification."

"Meaning?"

"Meaning they are testing whether the hospital samples actually came from Grace, not just whether they match Lily."

Nathan stared at him.

"You think someone switched the sample."

"I think someone who can alter police evidence, hospital access logs, financial records, video, and birth certificates would not be intimidated by a blood tube."

Nathan looked toward the window.

Cole Tower stood six blocks away.

He had spent half his adult life believing that building represented independence from his father.

Now it looked like a monument built on secrets he had inherited without understanding.

His phone buzzed.

Quinn.

"We found something at Reese's house."

"A suspect?"

"Better."

"What?"

"A recorder."

Nathan was at the station twenty minutes later.

Quinn placed a small digital voice recorder on the table.

It had been found inside an air vent behind Reese's desk.

The device contained seventeen audio files.

Sixteen were grocery reminders, phone numbers, and ordinary notes.

The seventeenth was recorded three days earlier.

Quinn pressed play.

Reese's voice filled the room.

"If this is found, it means they came before I could leave."

Nathan leaned forward.

The recording continued.

"I was paid to sign birth records at North Lake Women's Clinic after my license was revoked."

Grace closed her eyes when Quinn played the recording for her through the interview-room speaker.

Reese named Conrad Vale.

He named Caleb Rourke.

He admitted that certain patients were registered under false identifiers.

He admitted that medical specimens were relabeled.

Then he said the line Nathan needed to hear.

"Grace Bennett delivered a healthy baby girl on November seventeenth."

Grace covered her mouth.

Nathan gripped the edge of the table.

"The child was not switched."

Reese's voice cracked with fear.

"The records were."

Daniel exhaled.

The preliminary DNA result had not exposed a hidden maternity secret.

It had exposed ongoing evidence tampering.

Reese continued.

"The purpose was to create multiple legal identities around the same child so custody could be redirected if necessary."

Quinn paused the file.

"Multiple identities."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"An insurance policy."

Nathan looked at Grace.

"If you ever came back, they could claim Lily belonged to someone else."

Grace's face hardened.

"Victoria."

Quinn resumed the recording.

Reese said the sealed Infant Female Vale certificate had never represented a real delivery.

Victoria had not given birth that night.

The record was fabricated forty-eight hours later at Conrad's request.

The false certificate existed for one purpose.

If Grace ever challenged the Cole or Vale families, Conrad could produce a legal record suggesting Lily had been born to Victoria and then abducted.

Nathan felt physically sick.

They had created a future kidnapping accusation before Lily was three days old.

Reese admitted he had kept copies because he feared Conrad would eventually erase him too.

"I told Richard Cole what had been done."

Nathan leaned closer.

"Richard wanted the false certificate destroyed."

A long silence followed on the recording.

"Conrad refused."

Then Reese said something unexpected.

"Richard paid me to create a second sealed file that would prove Grace's maternity if Conrad ever used the first."

Daniel looked at Nathan.

"Your father created a countermeasure."

Nathan did not feel grateful.

"After helping create the problem."

Reese gave the location of the second file.

It was stored in a private records archive beneath St. Catherine Behavioral Center in Wisconsin.

The same facility that had held Evelyn.

Quinn stopped the recording.

"We are getting a warrant."

Nathan shook his head.

"Conrad knows Reese is dead."

"Which is why we are not announcing where we are going."

"He may already know."

"Then we move faster."

The door opened.

A lab courier handed Quinn a sealed packet.

The independent DNA results had arrived.

Quinn read the first page.

Then she handed it to Grace.

Grace's hands shook so badly she could barely hold the paper.

The result confirmed Nathan as Lily's biological father.

It also confirmed Grace as Lily's biological mother with a probability greater than 99.99 percent.

Grace bowed her head.

For several seconds she made no sound.

Then tears fell onto the report.

Nathan sat beside her.

"You never needed a test to know."

Grace looked at him.

"I did after they made me doubt my own body."

Nathan had no answer to that.

Quinn read the identity verification.

The original hospital tube labeled GRACE BENNETT contained blood from an unknown female with no relation to Lily.

The hospital collection log showed the tube had been in police custody for only thirty-seven minutes before testing.

Someone had swapped it inside either the hospital or the evidence transfer vehicle.

Quinn's anger became visible.

"I signed that chain."

Nathan looked at her.

"Then someone wanted you to own the failure."

She nodded once.

"They almost succeeded."

Daniel used the independent test to demand Grace's immediate release.

The prosecutor still resisted.

He argued that maternity did not erase the attempted murder evidence.

Daniel produced the state lab report proving the garage video had been manipulated.

The prosecutor pointed to the knife.

Daniel asked whether Grace's fingerprints had been found on the handle.

The answer was yes.

Then Quinn produced a second finding.

The fingerprints were on top of a thin layer of medical adhesive.

Someone had pressed Grace's fingers onto the handle while she was unconscious.

The prosecutor went quiet.

By noon, Grace walked out of the holding area.

Lily ran down the hall and crashed into her arms.

Grace cried out from the shoulder pain but did not let go.

"Mommy."

"I am here."

"They said you did a bad thing."

Grace kissed her hair.

"They were wrong."

Lily looked at Nathan.

"Daddy said they were lying."

Grace met Nathan's eyes over Lily's head.

Something softened there for half a second.

Then it disappeared.

They were not a family simply because biology had finally been proven.

Five years of absence did not vanish with a lab result.

Nathan knew that.

He also knew he would spend however long it took earning every inch of trust.

Quinn approached.

"We have another problem."

Nathan almost laughed.

"Of course we do."

She handed him a court petition.

Conrad Vale had filed for emergency guardianship of Lily on behalf of Victoria.

The petition alleged Nathan was under criminal investigation and Grace was mentally unstable.

Attached was the false Infant Female Vale birth certificate.

Daniel stared at it.

"He knows Reese's confession exists."

"The judge does not yet."

Quinn frowned.

"And the hearing is in ninety minutes."

Grace tightened her arms around Lily.

"He is trying to take her legally now."

Nathan looked at Daniel.

"Then we go to court."

Daniel's face remained grim.

"There is more."

"What?"

"The judge assigned to the emergency hearing is Margaret Sloan."

Nathan knew the name.

Judge Sloan's husband sat on the charitable board of the Vale Foundation.

Nathan stared at the petition.

Conrad had failed to take Lily through fear.

He had failed through forged evidence.

Now he was going to use a courtroom.

Grace whispered.

"This is exactly what your father promised would happen if I ever came back."

Nathan looked at her.

"Then this time you do not face it alone."

Before Grace could answer, Lily touched the false birth certificate.

Her small finger landed on Victoria's name.

May you like

"Why does the bad lady say she is my mommy?"

No one in the room could give her an answer gentle enough.
