Chapter 17 - DOCK SEVEN

The plan depended on Conrad believing Nathan still valued the empire more than the truth.

That was the easiest lie Nathan had ever told.

For most of his life, it would not have been a lie at all.

Quinn arranged two unmarked tactical teams around Dock Seven.

A third team approached by river in a maintenance vessel with its lights off.

Daniel created an encrypted drive containing copies of the ledger scans.

The drive also contained a silent tracking program written by a state cyber investigator.

If Conrad connected it to a networked computer, police would know exactly where the files went.

Nathan carried the physical black ledger inside a waterproof case.

Quinn objected.

"We can use a replica."

"Conrad has seen it."

"How?"

"He lived inside this conspiracy for thirty years."

Evelyn agreed.

"He will know the cover, the binding, the ink, and the smell."

Quinn looked at her.

"The smell?"

"Richard smoked cigars over that ledger for twenty years."

Nathan almost smiled.

"She is right."

Quinn did not like any part of it.

"You hand him the real ledger only if I tell you to."

Nathan nodded.

"And if he threatens Evan?"

"You still wait."

"And Miles's brother?"

"You still wait."

Nathan looked at her.

"You are asking me to watch people get hurt."

"I am asking you not to turn two hostages into three."

Grace arrived before they left the Vale mansion.

Nathan's anger flared immediately.

"Why are you here?"

"Because Lily is with Evelyn and six officers."

"That was not my question."

"I know."

Grace wore a dark jacket over her injured shoulder and looked tired enough to collapse.

She did not.

"I am coming to Dock Seven."

"No."

"Conrad's entire system began with threatening me."

"That is exactly why you are not going."

Grace stepped closer.

"You are not my father, my husband, or my owner."

Nathan stopped.

"I know."

"Then do not make decisions for me because you are frightened."

The words hit with precision.

His father had called control protection.

Conrad called control necessity.

Nathan could not repeat the same pattern while claiming to fight it.

"What do you want to do?"

Grace's expression softened slightly.

"I want to be there because Conrad may talk differently if he sees me."

"He may target you."

"He already does."

Quinn entered the room.

"Absolutely not."

Grace turned.

"Detective."

"You are an assault victim and a witness."

"I am also the person Conrad spent five years trying to silence."

"Which is why I prefer you unsilenced and breathing."

Grace almost smiled.

"That makes two of us."

Quinn eventually allowed Grace to remain in a command vehicle three blocks from the dock.

Nathan considered that a victory for Quinn and a defeat for himself.

Grace considered it temporary.

Dock Seven was a maze of containers, loading cranes, and wet concrete beside the black river.

Nathan entered alone at 6:03 a.m.

The sky was beginning to lighten behind the city.

He carried the ledger case in one hand and the encrypted drive in his coat pocket.

A speaker mounted above the loading bay crackled.

Conrad's voice filled the empty terminal.

"Put the case on the yellow line."

Nathan looked around.

"Show me Evan."

"The case first."

"No."

Silence.

Then a side door opened.

Evan was pushed into view by a man wearing a black jacket.

His hands were tied.

Blood ran from his eyebrow.

Miles's brother appeared behind him.

Both were alive.

Nathan placed the case on the yellow line.

"Now come out."

Conrad laughed through the speaker.

"You still think meetings require everyone at the same table."

Nathan saw no sign of him.

"You want the ledger."

"I want all copies."

"You cannot erase the internet."

"No, but I can erase people who know how to read it."

Nathan felt cold.

"How many people have you erased?"

Conrad did not answer.

"My mother?"

"She lived."

"That was not the question."

"Malcolm Reese made his own mistakes."

Nathan caught it.

"You had Reese killed."

The speaker went silent.

Quinn's voice whispered through Nathan's hidden earpiece.

"Keep him talking."

Nathan moved toward the hostages.

The guard beside Evan raised a weapon.

"Stop."

Nathan stopped.

"You need me alive to access the rest."

Conrad's voice returned.

"Do I?"

"The ledger scans are encrypted."

"Evan can decrypt them."

Evan shouted.

"No, I cannot."

The guard struck him in the stomach.

Evan folded over.

Nathan's hands curled into fists.

"Do that again and the password dies with me."

Conrad laughed.

"You finally sound like Richard."

"Do not insult me."

"He said the same thing when I held Evelyn."

Nathan felt every muscle in his body tighten.

"You were there after the crash."

"Of course."

"You ordered Rourke to run her off the road."

Conrad paused.

"I ordered him to stop her from reaching the federal building."

"By killing her?"

"By frightening her."

Nathan remembered Richard using the same distinction on the cassette.

Men who built empires apparently loved passive verbs around violence.

"And my father?"

"Richard was weak when family became involved."

"You mean human."

"I mean weak."

Nathan looked toward Evan.

"Did you order my father to threaten Grace?"

Conrad answered without hesitation.

"Yes."

Grace heard it inside the command vehicle.

Quinn's audio technician recorded every word.

Nathan kept going.

"Did you create the false birth certificate?"

"I authorized it."

"Did you pay Reese?"

"Yes."

"Did you order surveillance on Lily?"

"Yes."

"Did Victoria know?"

Silence.

Nathan waited.

"Did Victoria know?"

Conrad's voice sharpened.

"My daughter knew what she needed to know."

"Did she know Lily was mine before she attacked Grace?"

The guard beside Evan looked toward the ceiling speaker.

Conrad did not answer.

Nathan understood that this question mattered to him personally.

"She knew."

"Victoria is emotional."

"She knew."

"She understood that the child complicated the agreement."

Nathan felt disgust.

"The agreement to marry me."

"The agreement to unify two families whose assets should never have been separated."

"I thought she loved me."

Conrad laughed.

"She did."

Nathan almost laughed too.

"That is your defense?"

"Love and usefulness are not mutually exclusive."

The sentence sounded like something Richard might have believed.

Nathan looked at the ledger case.

"Release them."

"The copies first."

"Bring me a laptop."

The guard moved toward a workstation near the loading bay.

He opened a rugged computer.

Nathan approached slowly.

Quinn whispered in his ear.

"River team is in position."

"I need one minute."

Nathan removed the encrypted drive.

The guard plugged it in.

A password prompt appeared.

Nathan typed a false twenty-character string.

ACCESS DENIED.

"Again."

Conrad's voice came through the speaker.

Nathan typed another false password.

ACCESS DENIED.

The guard became impatient.

"Stop playing."

Nathan looked at the camera above the workstation.

"Conrad, release one hostage."

"No."

"Then the third password locks the drive permanently."

Silence.

Evan looked at Nathan and realized the bluff.

He joined it.

"He is telling the truth."

Conrad cursed.

"Release Miles's brother."

The guard cut the younger man's restraints and shoved him toward the open loading door.

He stumbled across the concrete.

Quinn's team pulled him behind cover.

One hostage safe.

Nathan typed the real password.

The drive opened.

The tracking program activated silently.

"You have the files."

Conrad's voice returned.

"Delete the remote copies."

"Release Evan."

"He owes me."

"He owes the state now."

Evan laughed weakly.

"That may be the nicest thing anyone has said about prison."

The guard struck him again.

Nathan took a step.

The guard raised his weapon.

Quinn whispered.

"Hold."

Nathan stopped.

"Conrad, you do not need Evan anymore."

"I never needed Evan."

Evan's face changed.

Conrad continued.

"I needed his access."

The guard moved behind Evan.

Nathan saw the weapon rise.

"Now."

Quinn's command exploded through the channel.

The terminal doors burst inward.

Police flooded the loading bay.

The river team came through the dock entrance.

The guard dragged Evan backward and fired once toward the officers.

Gunfire cracked through the terminal.

Nathan dropped behind a steel barrier.

Evan twisted away from the guard.

The guard grabbed his jacket.

Nathan lunged.

He slammed into both men.

The weapon skidded across the concrete.

Evan hit the floor.

Nathan struggled with the guard until an officer pulled them apart.

Within seconds, the loading bay was secure.

Evan rolled onto his back, gasping.

Nathan knelt beside him.

"Are you hit?"

"Only my pride."

"You never had much."

Evan laughed and winced.

Then Quinn's voice came through the terminal.

"Conrad is not here."

Nathan stood.

They searched the offices.

Empty.

The speaker system had been controlled remotely.

The tracked laptop had connected through a private network node two miles away.

Conrad had never been at Dock Seven.

Nathan looked at the empty loading bay.

"He used the hostages to keep us here."

Quinn checked the tracker.

"The laptop connection is moving."

"Moving where?"

The signal traveled north toward downtown.

Then it stopped.

Cole Tower.

Nathan stared at the map.

"He is in my building."

Daniel called from the command vehicle.

His voice was urgent.

"Nathan, the board has scheduled an emergency shareholder broadcast for 7:00."

"Why?"

"Samuel Price is announcing a restructuring."

"Under whose authority?"

"The superseding trust instrument."

"It is forged."

"They are using it until a court says otherwise."

Nathan looked at the time.

Forty-three minutes until the broadcast.

Then Grace's voice came over Daniel's phone.

"Nathan, there is something else."

"What?"

"Victoria called me."

Nathan froze.

"From the hospital?"

"Yes."

"What did she want?"

Grace hesitated.

"She wants to confess."

Nathan stared at Evan.

"To what?"

Grace answered.

"Everything."

Nathan felt hope rise.

Then Grace finished the sentence.

"But only if I go to her alone."

Nathan closed his eyes.

"No."

Grace's voice hardened.

"Nathan."

"Absolutely not."

"She says she has proof Conrad ordered the attack on me."

"Then she can give it to Quinn."

"She says she cannot trust police."

Quinn heard that and looked unimpressed.

Grace continued.

"She says someone inside the department helped her father."

Quinn's expression changed.

That possibility was no longer ridiculous.

Nathan looked toward the city.

Conrad was moving on the company.

Victoria was suddenly offering a confession.

The trust deadline was approaching.

And every path demanded someone step into danger.

Nathan understood Conrad's strategy again.

Split them.

Distract them.

Force the wrong choice.

He picked up the black ledger.

This time, he made a different choice.

"We stop reacting."

Quinn looked at him.

"Meaning?"

Nathan opened his phone and called the largest financial news network in Chicago.

"Meaning Conrad wants to control what becomes public."

May you like

Nathan stared at the ledger in his hands.

"So I am going to make everything public."
