Chapter 18 - BURNING THE EMPIRE

At 6:31 a.m., Nathan Cole requested a live interview.

At 6:34, the network accepted.

At 6:38, Cole Holdings' communications department issued a warning that Nathan no longer spoke for the company.

At 6:39, the warning made the interview irresistible.

By 6:45, every major business channel was carrying the same banner.

SUSPENDED COLE CEO TO ADDRESS FAMILY AND CORPORATE SCANDAL LIVE.

Daniel tried one last time to slow Nathan down.

"If you disclose the ledger publicly, you may destroy shareholder value before prosecutors can separate legitimate operations from criminal ones."

"I know."

"Thousands of employees did not create this conspiracy."

"I know."

"Pension funds hold our stock."

"I know."

"Lenders may freeze credit."

"I know."

Daniel studied him.

"Then tell me why this is the right move."

Nathan looked through the command-vehicle window at Dock Seven.

Miles was sitting beside his rescued brother.

Evan was receiving medical treatment under police guard.

Grace was on the phone with Victoria.

Evelyn was legally fighting to exist.

Lily was sleeping through a war built around her name.

"Because every private channel belongs to Conrad."

Nathan held up the ledger.

"Courts can be delayed."

"Evidence rooms can be breached."

"Hospitals can be infiltrated."

"Boards can be bought."

"Files can disappear."

"But if ten million people have copies before breakfast, he cannot put the truth back in a safe."

Daniel looked at him for several seconds.

Then he nodded.

"We release verified pages only."

"All verified pages."

"And we redact innocent employees, medical patients, minors, and people whose involvement is not established."

"Agreed."

Daniel began preparing the release.

Nathan insisted that copies go simultaneously to federal prosecutors, the state attorney general, major newspapers, two international financial watchdogs, and employee representatives.

"If the company is going to fall, the people working there should not learn from a stock ticker."

Daniel nodded.

"That is the first thing you have said this morning that sounds like a CEO."

Nathan shook his head.

"Maybe it is the first thing I have said that does not."

At 6:57, Nathan sat in front of a portable camera in a police conference room near the dock.

He wore the same smoke-stained shirt from Hawthorne under a borrowed jacket.

A producer asked whether he wanted makeup.

Nathan declined.

He did not want to look polished.

He wanted to look like what the truth had cost.

The red light came on at 7:00.

The anchor introduced him.

"Mr. Cole, your board says you are suspended, your fiancee was attacked, your former employee faces allegations, and you are claiming a decades-long conspiracy involving your own father."

"Yes."

"Why should anyone believe you?"

Nathan looked directly into the camera.

"They should not believe me because my name is Cole."

The anchor seemed surprised.

"They should look at the evidence I am releasing while we speak."

Nathan placed Richard's recorded confession on the table.

"My father participated in fraud, coercion, falsification of legal records, unlawful confinement, and the intimidation of a pregnant woman."

Daniel watched the market feed.

Cole Holdings stock dropped six percent in two minutes.

Nathan continued.

"That pregnant woman was Grace Bennett."

"She gave birth to my daughter, Lily."

"For five years, Grace hid Lily because my father and Conrad Vale threatened to destroy her family and take her child."

The anchor interrupted.

"Mr. Vale denies wrongdoing."

"Then he can explain his signatures."

Nathan released the first ledger pages.

Financial reporters began posting screenshots immediately.

Cole stock dropped twelve percent.

Vale Capital bonds fell.

Nathan continued.

"My mother, Evelyn Cole, was declared dead twenty-nine years ago."

"She is alive."

The anchor stared at him.

"You understand how extraordinary that claim sounds."

"I do."

Nathan looked at the camera.

"Mom, if you are watching, I am sorry the world is meeting you before I have had time to meet you again myself."

Evelyn watched from the safe location with Lily asleep beside her.

She covered her mouth.

Nathan continued.

"Her death was staged after she discovered criminal financial activity involving Cole and Vale entities."

"My father helped maintain that lie."

Cole stock dropped twenty-one percent.

Trading volume exploded.

The exchange halted trading temporarily.

Daniel's phone filled with messages from directors, bankers, regulators, and journalists.

He ignored them.

The anchor asked the question everyone expected.

"Are you deliberately destroying your own company?"

Nathan paused.

This was the choice from the beginning.

Legacy or Lily.

Empire or truth.

He answered carefully.

"I am refusing to protect a company from the consequences of crimes committed to preserve it."

The sentence traveled faster than any press release Cole Holdings had ever issued.

"If that destroys the empire my family built, then the empire was already rotten."

Daniel looked at Nathan with something close to pride.

The anchor asked whether Nathan expected criminal charges against himself.

"If investigators find evidence that I committed crimes, I should face them."

"Even if you did not know?"

"Not knowing is not a magic defense for every failure."

Nathan thought of Grace.

"I spent years enjoying the benefits of a system without asking enough about its cost."

"That is not the same as ordering what was done, but I will not pretend ignorance makes me brave."

The interview lasted seventeen minutes.

By the time it ended, the ledger files had been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times.

Federal prosecutors confirmed receipt.

The state attorney general announced a joint investigative task force.

Cole Holdings announced an internal review.

Nathan laughed when he read that.

"An internal review."

Daniel shrugged.

"Corporations have traditions."

Then the market opened again.

Cole stock fell another thirty percent before being halted a second time.

Nathan watched billions in market value vanish.

He expected panic.

Instead he felt strangely calm.

The number had always seemed like power.

Now it looked like a scoreboard for a game he no longer wanted to play.

His phone rang.

Samuel Price.

Nathan answered on speaker.

"You have destroyed thousands of families."

Samuel's voice shook with rage.

"You did not even give the board time to protect employees."

Nathan looked at Daniel.

"You mean protect evidence."

"You self-righteous bastard."

"Did you take money from Conrad in 1997?"

Silence.

"What?"

"Two hundred fifty thousand dollars."

Samuel recovered.

"I have no idea what you are talking about."

"The ledger does."

"That ledger is fiction."

"Then why did you order security to take it from police?"

Samuel's breathing changed.

Nathan continued.

"Why did you tell Miles Kerr to steal it?"

"I did no such thing."

"He says you did."

"A frightened analyst will say anything."

Nathan felt disgust.

"That is your whole system, is it not?"

"Make people afraid, then use their fear to discredit them."

Samuel hung up.

Quinn immediately sent the call recording to investigators.

Then Grace entered the room.

Nathan stood.

"You went to Victoria."

"Not alone."

Quinn looked annoyed.

"She went with two officers without waiting for me."

Grace ignored the complaint.

She held a small silver recorder.

"Victoria talked."

Nathan stared at it.

"What did she say?"

Grace sat down.

Her face showed no satisfaction.

"She knew Lily was yours before the engagement."

Nathan had expected it.

Hearing it still hurt.

"How long before?"

"Her father told her two years ago."

"Before she met me?"

Grace nodded.

Nathan looked at the wall.

Every intimate memory with Victoria rearranged itself.

Their first dinner.

The charity gala where she claimed they met by accident.

Her sudden interest in Cole's foundation work.

Her patience with Nathan's suspicion of marriage.

It had been cultivated.

"Did she ever love me?"

Grace looked uncomfortable.

"She says she did."

Nathan laughed bitterly.

"Conrad said the same thing."

Grace continued.

Victoria admitted that Conrad instructed her to marry Nathan before he turned forty.

She knew a biological child existed but did not know where Grace had hidden Lily.

When Grace appeared in Nathan's house as a maid, Victoria recognized her from surveillance files.

She told Conrad.

Conrad ordered Victoria to do nothing until the wedding.

Victoria disobeyed.

"Why?"

Grace looked at Nathan.

"She found the birth certificate in her father's files and realized Lily could control the trust."

"So she attacked you."

"Yes."

"And Lily?"

Grace's expression hardened.

"She says she never intended to hit Lily."

Nathan felt rage return.

"She raised a hockey stick over both of you."

"I know."

"Do you believe her?"

"No."

Grace's answer was immediate.

"I believe she lost control and no longer knew what she intended."

That was worse in its own way.

Nathan looked at the recorder.

"What about the stabbing?"

Grace's face changed.

"Conrad did it."

Nathan stared at her.

"Victoria says he came to the hospital after police first questioned her."

"He told her she had endangered the plan."

"Later his people moved her to the parking garage under the excuse that she needed private transport."

"Conrad stabbed her himself and left her beside the unconscious Grace."

Quinn's jaw tightened.

"Did she see his face?"

"Yes."

"Will she testify?"

Grace looked at the recorder.

"She says she will if you put her in federal protection."

Nathan almost laughed at the absurdity.

The woman who had attacked his child now wanted protection from her father.

Grace saw his expression.

"She is guilty."

"I know."

"Helping us does not erase that."

"I know."

"But her father tried to kill her when she became inconvenient."

Nathan nodded slowly.

He did not have to forgive Victoria to use the truth she finally offered.

Quinn took the recorder.

"This can change the attempted murder case."

Nathan looked at Grace.

"Why did Victoria call you instead of me?"

Grace was quiet.

"Because she knew you would not come."

"Correct."

"And because she wanted to tell me something she thought you would never believe from her."

Nathan waited.

Grace looked toward Quinn.

"Conrad did not create the entire succession plan."

Nathan frowned.

"Who did?"

Grace answered.

"Richard."

Nathan stared at her.

"My father?"

"Victoria says your father designed the original marriage-and-heir structure fifteen years ago."

"Why?"

"To end the war between the Cole and Vale families by merging control into one generation."

Nathan felt sick.

Richard had not merely been coerced by Conrad.

At times, he had been an architect.

Grace continued.

"Conrad changed the plan later."

"How?"

"Richard intended the merged trust to be temporary until you had full control."

"Conrad altered it so Vale Capital would remain permanent co-controller."

Nathan thought of the forged superseding instrument.

"That is why Richard turned against him."

"Maybe."

Grace looked at the released ledger pages.

"Or maybe your father only objected when the trap he helped build started closing around you."

Nathan could not argue.

Evelyn called.

Her voice was calm but urgent.

"Nathan, you need to come to me."

"What happened?"

"Lily found something."

Nathan's heart jumped.

"Is she hurt?"

"No."

"Then what?"

Evelyn looked off camera.

"She opened your father's paper star."

Nathan frowned.

"What paper star?"

"The one she gave you."

Nathan touched his wallet.

It was empty.

He had given the star back to Lily before leaving for Dock Seven because she said Grandma needed it more.

Evelyn continued.

"Grace taught her to fold stars from old notes."

"So?"

"This one was not made from ordinary paper."

Evelyn held a flattened sheet toward the camera.

Faded handwriting covered one side.

Richard's handwriting.

Nathan stared.

"Where did Lily get that?"

Grace answered before Evelyn could.

"From the red folder at Hawthorne."

Nathan looked at her.

Grace explained that when they escaped the burning house, several loose pages had fallen from the folder into Nathan's coat.

Later, Lily found one on the hospital floor and folded it into a star.

No one had noticed the writing because it was on the inside.

Evelyn held the page closer.

At the top were four words.

FINAL DISTRIBUTION IF EXPOSED.

Below them was a list of offshore accounts.

Daniel leaned toward the screen.

"Those could hold the missing money."

Evelyn nodded.

"More than money."

At the bottom, Richard had written one sentence.

THE ORIGINALS ARE WITH CASSANDRA.

Nathan frowned.

"Who is Cassandra?"

Evelyn's face went pale.

"Richard's older sister."

Nathan stared at her.

"Dad did not have a sister."

May you like

Evelyn looked at him sadly.

"That is what he told you."
