Chapter 6 - THE NAME ON THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE

Nathan returned to the table slowly.
"My mother died when I was six."
Grace did not blink.
"I know what you were told."
"You just said that coat belonged to her."
"Yes."
"How would you know?"
Grace's face tightened.
"Because I met her."
The room seemed to tilt.
Daniel stared at Grace.
Even Quinn stopped writing.
Nathan sat down because his knees no longer felt reliable.
"When?"
"Five years ago."
"Before you disappeared?"
"Three days before."
Nathan's voice dropped.
"You met my dead mother three days before my father forced you out of my life."
"Yes."
"And you never thought I should know?"
Grace looked at him with tears of anger rather than guilt.
"I thought you should know everything."
"Then why did you say nothing?"
"Because she begged me not to."
Nathan stood again.
"Everyone keeps deciding what I am allowed to know."
"She was terrified."
"So was I when they lowered an empty casket into the ground."
Grace flinched.
Nathan immediately regretted the cruelty in his tone, but he could not take the words back.
Daniel spoke quietly.
"Tell us what happened."
Grace looked down at her restrained hands.
"A woman came to my apartment while you were in New York."
"What woman?"
"She called herself Evelyn Hart."
Nathan's mother's maiden name had been Hart.
Grace continued.
"She knew I was pregnant."
Nathan clenched his jaw.
"Did my father send her?"
"No."
"How do you know?"
"Because she hated him."
Grace took a slow breath.
"She told me Richard had lied to you about her death."
"Why?"
"Because she discovered that Conrad Vale had been using Cole companies to wash money through construction contracts."
Daniel went still.
"Money laundering?"
"That was the phrase she used."
Grace nodded.
"She said she confronted Richard and threatened to go to federal investigators."
Nathan stared at the wall.
His father had always described Evelyn as fragile after Nathan's birth.
He said she suffered a breakdown.
He said the accident happened during one of her unstable episodes.
Now every memory sounded rehearsed.
"What happened to her?"
"She said Conrad arranged the crash."
Quinn leaned forward.
"Did she say Richard knew?"
"Not before the crash."
"After?"
Grace looked at Nathan.
"Yes."
Nathan felt something break quietly inside him.
"He knew she survived."
"Yes."
"He let me believe she was dead."
"Yes."
Grace's voice softened.
"She said Richard was told that if he exposed Conrad, both of you would be killed."
Nathan laughed bitterly.
"So he protected me by destroying her."
"I think he convinced himself that was true."
"Do not defend him."
"I am not."
Grace lifted her chin.
"I am telling you how frightened people justify terrible things."
Nathan looked at her.
He knew she was no longer talking only about his father.
"Why did Evelyn come to you?"
"Because she had heard about the pregnancy."
"How?"
"She would not say."
"What did she want?"
Grace hesitated.
"She wanted me to leave you."
Nathan stared at her.
"She agreed with my father?"
"For a different reason."
"Which was?"
"She said the moment Conrad knew you had a child, that child would become leverage."
Nathan thought of the exchange message.
THE CHILD FOR THE MOTHER.
His stomach turned.
Grace continued.
"She told me to disappear before anyone could connect Lily to you."
"Lily was not born yet."
"No."
"Then how did you know she was a girl?"
Grace looked away.
Nathan remembered the folder hint.
The name I took from him.
He thought about Evelyn's name.
Then about Lily.
"You named her after someone."
Grace's eyes filled.
"Her full name is Lily Evelyn Bennett."
Nathan closed his eyes.
His daughter's middle name belonged to the mother he thought had died.
For five years, Grace had carried a piece of his family history in Lily's name while Nathan knew nothing.
"Why did you take the job in my house?"
Grace stared at him.
This was the question underneath everything.
She could have stayed away.
She could have kept hiding.
Instead she had become his maid and entered the home he shared with Victoria.
"Because Evelyn contacted me again."
Nathan opened his eyes.
"When?"
"Four months ago."
"She is alive now?"
"She was then."
Quinn leaned forward.
"How did she contact you?"
"A letter with no return address."
"Do you still have it?"
"No."
"Why?"
"It told me to burn it."
Daniel exhaled in frustration.
Grace looked at him.
"I had spent five years obeying instructions designed to keep my child alive."
Daniel said nothing.
"What did the letter say?"
"That Richard was dead and Conrad was moving to take full control of Cole Holdings through Victoria's marriage to Nathan."
Nathan felt the scheme coming into focus.
His engagement had not been a romance that became useful.
It may have been useful before it was ever romantic.
"Did Evelyn tell you to come to my house?"
"Yes."
"Why as a maid?"
"Because staff become invisible in houses like yours."
Nathan could not argue.
He had hired Grace through an agency and barely looked at her file beyond the background check.
He had recognized something familiar in her face but accepted her explanation that they had met briefly years earlier at a charity event.
He felt ashamed now.
He had not truly looked.
"What were you supposed to find?"
"A ledger."
Daniel glanced at the burned house evidence.
"The steel cabinet?"
"No."
Grace shook her head.
"A black accounting ledger your father kept separate from the company books."
"Where?"
"Evelyn believed Victoria had it."
Nathan thought of Victoria's private dressing room, her locked study, her insistence that he never touch the antique cabinet inherited from her grandmother.
"Did you find it?"
"No."
"Did Victoria know you were searching?"
"Not at first."
"When did she find out?"
Grace's face changed.
"Yesterday morning."
Nathan felt the room become colder.
"Before the attack."
"Yes."
Grace explained.
She had been cleaning Victoria's dressing room when she found a hidden compartment behind a row of shoe boxes.
Inside was not the ledger.
It was a copy of Lily's birth certificate.
Nathan's name was not on it.
But someone had circled Lily's middle name in red ink.
Beside it were four words.
EVELYN MADE CONTACT AGAIN.
Grace had taken a photograph with her phone.
Victoria entered before she could replace the document.
"That is why she attacked you."
"Partly."
Nathan frowned.
"What else?"
Grace looked at Quinn.
"Victoria said she had spent two years making Nathan trust her and she would not let a servant and a child destroy everything."
Nathan's hands curled into fists.
"Did she say Conrad told her to attack Lily?"
"No."
"Did she say she wanted Lily dead?"
Grace hesitated.
"She said, 'There cannot be an heir outside the agreement.'"
Daniel's head snapped up.
"What agreement?"
"I do not know."
Nathan looked at him.
"My inheritance."
Daniel opened his briefcase and pulled out a copy of Richard Cole's will.
"Your father's estate transfers voting control to you outright at age forty, unless you have a recognized biological descendant before then."
Nathan frowned.
"I know."
"Do you know the next clause?"
"The shares enter a family trust."
"Controlled by three trustees until the child turns eighteen."
"You are one."
"I am."
"Who are the other two?"
Daniel looked at him grimly.
"Your spouse, if legally married to you."
Nathan felt the answer before Daniel gave the rest.
"And the largest secured lender to Cole Holdings."
Nathan looked at Quinn.
"Vale Capital."
Daniel nodded.
If Nathan married Victoria and Lily were legally recognized as his daughter, Victoria and Conrad's financial arm could control the trust holding Nathan's voting shares.
The marriage and the child were not conflicting pieces of the conspiracy.
Together, they were the mechanism.
Grace whispered.
"Victoria did not need Lily gone."
Nathan looked at her.
"She needed Lily controlled."
Grace nodded.
"Then why attack her?"
Quinn answered.
"Because Grace found the birth certificate before the wedding, and Victoria lost control of the situation."
Nathan thought of Victoria's expression in the kitchen.
The rage had been real.
But perhaps the plan was never to kill Lily.
Perhaps it was to terrify Grace into disappearing again.
Or perhaps Victoria had broken from her father's plan and acted on her own.
Either possibility made her dangerous.
A uniformed officer entered.
"Detective, the lab called about the garage video."
Quinn took the report.
Her eyes moved quickly.
"They found manipulation artifacts."
Nathan looked at Grace.
For the first time that morning, something went their way.
Then Quinn kept reading.
Her expression darkened again.
"What?"
"The edit was made using proprietary facial synthesis software."
Daniel frowned.
"Whose?"
Quinn looked directly at Nathan.
"Cole Holdings."
Nathan stared at her.
The software belonged to a security analytics subsidiary acquired two years earlier.
Only six executives had authorization to use it.
Evan was one of them.
Nathan stood.
"I am going to see my cousin."
His phone buzzed before he reached the door.
A message from Evan appeared.
I KNOW WHERE EVELYN IS.
May you like
A second message followed.
COME ALONE OR CONRAD MOVES HER.
