Chapter 3 - THE EXCHANGE

Nathan called the number immediately.

It was disconnected.

Daniel tried to stop him from getting behind the wheel.

"You are hurt and you inhaled smoke."

"Grace has been taken."

"Which is exactly why you cannot drive into a trap without thinking."

Nathan shoved the red folder into Daniel's hands.

"Then think while I drive."

They reached the hospital in twelve minutes.

Police vehicles blocked both entrances.

Reporters stood in the rain beneath umbrellas, shouting Nathan's name as soon as he stepped from the car.

He ignored them.

Inside, Detective Quinn met him with fury in her eyes.

"Where were you?"

"At Hawthorne."

"The house is on fire."

"Caleb Rourke set it."

Quinn went still.

"Rourke is alive?"

"You know him?"

"He worked organized crime cases before he joined your father."

Daniel handed her the red folder.

"He also maintained surveillance on Grace for five years."

Quinn opened it.

Her anger shifted into something more focused.

"Tell me exactly what happened."

Nathan did.

When he reached the photograph of Grace in the car, Quinn held out her hand.

Nathan gave her his phone.

She studied the image.

"The vehicle window shows a reflection."

Daniel leaned closer.

A blue neon sign was visible in the glass, reversed and blurred.

Quinn enlarged it.

"Marlowe Cold Storage."

Nathan knew the place.

Cole Holdings had once owned three warehouses on Marlowe Street.

They had sold the properties to a Vale subsidiary two years earlier.

"Conrad."

Quinn handed the phone back.

"Maybe."

"There is no maybe."

"If you want Grace alive, you will let me treat every assumption as dangerous."

Lily appeared at the end of the corridor with a social worker.

The moment she saw Nathan, she ran to him.

He caught her carefully.

She pressed her face into his chest.

"Where is Mommy?"

Nathan looked over her head at Quinn.

The detective shook her head almost imperceptibly.

"She had to go somewhere."

Lily pulled back.

"Did the bad lady take her?"

Nathan felt Daniel watching him.

"Someone did."

"Because of me?"

"No."

The answer came too quickly and too loudly.

Lily flinched.

Nathan immediately softened his voice.

"No, sweetheart."

"They always come because of me."

Nathan stared at her.

"What does that mean?"

Lily looked toward the social worker.

Then she whispered.

"Mommy said if the black car came back, we had to hide in the bathroom."

Quinn knelt beside them.

"What black car?"

Lily pointed at the photograph on Nathan's phone.

"That one."

Quinn stood.

"We move now."

Within minutes, a tactical team was preparing to enter Marlowe Cold Storage.

Nathan demanded to go.

Quinn refused.

"You are the target of the exchange."

"Lily is the target."

"Which means your presence could make them panic."

Nathan looked at Daniel.

"Find out who owns every camera around that warehouse."

Daniel nodded.

"And the board meeting?"

"Let them meet without me."

"If they remove you, they can freeze corporate security, legal access, and discretionary accounts."

Nathan looked toward the room where Lily was being protected.

"Then I will fight without them."

Daniel grabbed his shoulder.

"That sounds heroic until Grace needs private security, forensic accountants, safe housing, medical specialists, and lawyers."

Nathan stared at him.

"What are you saying?"

"Go to the board meeting."

Nathan almost hit him.

Daniel did not move.

"If Quinn is handling the rescue, the most useful thing you can do is keep control of the resources they are trying to take from you."

Nathan hated that he was right.

He hated even more that leaving the hospital felt like abandoning Grace a second time.

Quinn returned before he decided.

"We found something."

She led Nathan into a conference room.

A laptop showed security footage from a traffic camera near Marlowe Street.

The dark vehicle carrying Grace had entered the warehouse district twenty-six minutes earlier.

It had left nine minutes later.

"They are not there."

Nathan clenched his jaw.

"Then the photo was bait."

"Yes."

Quinn played the footage again.

This time Nathan noticed another vehicle.

A silver sedan entered three minutes after Grace's car.

"Stop."

Quinn paused it.

Nathan leaned toward the screen.

He recognized the license plate.

"That is Victoria's car."

Quinn looked at him.

"Victoria is at the police station."

"Then someone is using it."

Daniel entered with his phone in hand.

"I know who."

He placed a photograph on the screen.

A man in his early sixties was getting into Victoria's silver sedan outside the police station two hours earlier.

Nathan knew him immediately.

"Conrad Vale."

Victoria's father had walked out of the station while his daughter sat in an interview room.

Quinn called her unit.

"Track that sedan."

The answer came back seconds later.

The vehicle's built-in GPS had been disabled.

Nathan's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

"Nathan."

Conrad Vale's voice was calm.

"You should have married my daughter and left the maid alone."

Nathan signaled Quinn.

She immediately began tracing the call.

"Where is Grace?"

"Alive."

"I want proof."

A soft sound came through the speaker.

Then Grace spoke.

"Nathan, do not bring Lily."

A man struck something near the phone.

Grace gasped.

Nathan's vision narrowed.

"Touch her again and I will end you."

Conrad laughed quietly.

"That temper is why your father never trusted you with the truth."

"My father left me his confession."

Silence.

Nathan knew he had landed the first real blow.

"Did he?"

Conrad's voice changed.

"Then listen carefully."

Nathan heard Grace breathing in the background.

"The letter will not save her."

"Why not?"

"Because your father signed everything."

"Including the payments to you?"

Another pause.

"You still think I was his partner."

Nathan looked at Daniel.

"You were."

"No, son."

Nathan recoiled at the word.

"Your father worked for me."

The line went dead.

Quinn cursed.

"Call was routed through six relays."

Nathan stared at the phone.

His father had built Cole Holdings into a billion-dollar company.

He had never bowed to anyone in public.

Yet Conrad had sounded utterly certain.

Daniel opened the letter again.

"There may be more on the drive."

They plugged it into an isolated laptop.

The drive required a password.

A single hint appeared.

THE NAME I TOOK FROM HIM.

Nathan stared at the words.

"What name?"

Daniel shook his head.

Nathan thought about his father.

Richard Cole had been born Richard Callahan.

He changed his last name in his twenties after a bitter split with his own father.

Nathan typed CALLAHAN.

Wrong password.

He tried COLE.

Wrong.

Lily's voice came from the doorway.

"Mommy knows."

Nathan turned.

The social worker stood behind her apologetically.

"She heard you from the hall."

Nathan crouched.

"What does Mommy know?"

Lily held a small paper star she had been folding.

"The name."

"What name?"

"The one Grandpa made her promise never to say."

Nathan felt the room become very quiet.

"Did she ever say it to you?"

Lily nodded.

"When she thought I was asleep."

Nathan waited.

Lily whispered one word.

"Evelyn."

Daniel went pale.

Nathan typed EVELYN.

The drive unlocked.

There were twelve folders.

The first eleven were labeled with dates.

The twelfth had no date.

It had one title.

EVELYN COLE - ALIVE.

May you like

Nathan stared at the screen.

His mother had supposedly died when he was six years old.
