Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT ELENA DIED

Adrian listened to Mateo's voicemail four times.
Each time, the sentence sounded more impossible.
Vanessa had been at the hospital.
He walked into the living room and woke Olivia gently.
She sat up immediately when she saw his face.
"What happened?"
Adrian showed her the voicemail transcript.
Olivia read it twice.
Then she looked toward the dark staircase.
"Vanessa knew Mom?"
"I do not know."
"Mateo said Clara wrote it."
"That does not mean Clara knew why Vanessa was there."
Olivia stood.
"Call Clara."
Adrian looked at the clock.
It was after four in the morning.
"She just left."
"Dad."
Olivia's voice sharpened.
"This is about Mom."
Adrian knew she was right, but he also knew Clara had already given enough of herself to this family for one night.
He called Detective Brooks instead.
She answered on the second ring.
Adrian told her about the voicemail.
Brooks did not sound surprised that Mateo had admitted taking the memory card.
She had already heard that much during his interview.
What she had not heard was the part about Elena.
"He did not mention the journal?"
"Not to me."
Adrian frowned.
"Why would he leave me a voicemail and not tell you?"
Brooks was quiet for a moment.
"Because he is frightened of someone."
"Vanessa?"
"Maybe."
"Or because he is trying to control what information goes where."
Adrian looked at Olivia.
"Did he tell you where the journal is?"
"No."
Brooks sighed.
"I am going back into the interview room."
"Can you ask him about the hospital?"
"I can ask."
"But I also want you to do something."
"What?"
"Do not call Clara yet."
Adrian looked surprised.
"Why?"
"Because if the journal contains something important, I want to hear Mateo's version before anyone has a chance to coordinate stories."
Adrian hated the implication.
"Clara is not coordinating anything."
Brooks's tone hardened slightly.
"You believed Vanessa without evidence six hours ago."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"You are right."
"I am not accusing Clara."
"I am protecting the integrity of the information."
Adrian agreed.
When the call ended, Olivia sat beside him.
"Do you remember everyone who was at the hospital the night Mom died?"
Adrian stared at the blank television screen.
He remembered too much and not enough.
He remembered the smell of antiseptic.
He remembered Elena complaining that her chest felt tight.
He remembered a nurse saying they wanted to run more tests.
He remembered holding Emma, who was six weeks old, while Elena tried to smile from the bed.
He remembered Olivia arriving with Clara after school.
He remembered a cardiologist speaking too quickly.
He remembered Elena losing consciousness.
He remembered alarms.
He remembered being pushed into a hallway.
He remembered a young woman in navy scrubs offering him water.
Adrian's breath stopped.
Olivia noticed.
"What?"
He closed his eyes and searched the memory.
The woman had shoulder-length dark hair.
She had a hospital identification badge turned backward.
She had touched his arm and told him the doctors were doing everything they could.
Adrian had barely looked at her face.
He had been watching the doors.
"There was a woman."
Olivia leaned forward.
"Vanessa?"
"I do not know."
"What did she look like?"
Adrian described what little he remembered.
Olivia pulled up an old photograph of Vanessa from social media.
In the image, Vanessa had dark hair.
She had dyed it lighter before Adrian met her.
Adrian stared at the photograph.
The resemblance made his stomach tighten, but memory was unreliable.
He refused to repeat his old mistake.
"It could have been her."
Olivia looked disappointed by his caution.
Then she understood.
"You do not want to decide before you know."
"No."
"Good."
That single word meant more to Adrian than she probably realized.
At 5:03 in the morning, Brooks called back.
Mateo had finally admitted he had the journal.
He claimed it was hidden inside a locked toolbox in a storage unit near his home.
Officers were obtaining access.
He also explained why he had removed the nursery card.
Vanessa had paid him two thousand dollars in cash.
She told him the camera had accidentally recorded her undressing while she was changing Emma.
She said Adrian would fire Mateo if the footage leaked.
Mateo believed her because Vanessa knew details about his wife's medical bills and offered another five thousand dollars if he kept quiet.
"Did he tamper with the breathing monitor?" Adrian asked.
"He denies it."
"The locks?"
"He admits making duplicate keys for Vanessa."
Adrian's jaw clenched.
"How many?"
"Five."
"Five?"
"Nursery."
"Staff room."
"West entrance."
"Your office."
Brooks paused.
"And the file room in your basement."
Adrian sat down hard.
The file room contained old legal records, estate documents, tax files, and boxes from Elena's personal office.
"Why would she need that?"
"Mateo says she told him you asked for the duplicates."
Adrian laughed bitterly.
"Of course she did."
"He also admits leaving his lighter in the staff room last week."
"So Vanessa could have taken it."
"Yes."
"Or someone else could have."
"Correct."
Adrian rubbed his forehead.
"What about the hospital?"
Brooks became quiet.
"Mateo says the journal entry mentions a photograph."
"What photograph?"
"He only read part of the page."
"Clara apparently wrote that she recognized Vanessa after seeing one of your engagement photographs."
"She believed Vanessa had been working at St. Catherine's the night Elena died."
Olivia stood abruptly.
"Working there?"
Brooks heard her.
"Possibly."
Adrian's voice tightened.
"Vanessa told me she was an event consultant before we met."
"Employment records will answer that."
Adrian stared at the floor.
"Why did Clara never tell me?"
Brooks did not answer for her.
Adrian knew he would have to ask Clara himself.
The journal was recovered shortly after sunrise.
Brooks returned to the house at 7:20 with it sealed in a clear evidence bag.
The dark green cover was scuffed but intact.
Clara's black elastic band was still wrapped around it.
Adrian did not touch it.
He did not ask Brooks to open it in front of him.
"It is hers."
Brooks nodded.
"She will need to authenticate the writing."
"Then call her."
This time, Brooks agreed.
Clara arrived forty minutes later with her older brother, Rafael.
Rafael Reyes was broad-shouldered, quiet, and visibly furious.
He did not shake Adrian's hand.
Adrian did not offer it.
Clara had covered the bruise on her cheek with makeup, but it was still visible.
Rafael noticed Adrian looking.
"Do not."
Adrian lowered his eyes.
"Understood."
Brooks placed the journal on the kitchen table.
Clara identified it immediately.
She confirmed the handwriting was hers.
Then Brooks asked her about the entry mentioning Elena's death.
Clara's face changed.
Rafael looked at his sister.
"What entry?"
Clara closed her eyes.
"I should have told you."
Adrian stood absolutely still.
"Told me what?"
Clara looked at him.
"The first time I met Vanessa was not when you introduced us."
Olivia gripped the back of a chair.
"When was it?"
Clara swallowed.
"The night Elena died."
The room went silent.
Adrian's voice barely worked.
"Where?"
"At St. Catherine's."
"What was she doing there?"
"She was wearing scrubs."
Adrian's heart began pounding.
"Was she a nurse?"
Clara shook her head.
"I do not know."
"I only saw her for maybe a minute."
Clara stared at the table as she returned to the memory.
"Olivia was crying."
"You were down the hall with the doctor."
"I was holding Emma."
"A woman came out of Elena's room carrying a small clear bag."
Adrian's throat tightened.
"What kind of bag?"
"Like a hospital property bag."
"She looked at me."
"Then she looked at Emma."
Clara's hands began to shake.
"And she said something I did not understand at the time."
Olivia whispered.
"What?"
Clara looked directly at Adrian.
"She said, 'That baby changes everything.'"
Rafael swore under his breath.
Adrian felt a chill across his arms.
"Why did you not tell me when I introduced Vanessa?"
Clara's face filled with shame.
"Because I was not sure."
"Her hair was different."
"Her makeup was different."
"And you were happy for the first time since Elena died."
Adrian looked away.
Clara continued.
"I told myself it was impossible."
"Then I saw an old photograph on Vanessa's tablet."
"She had dark hair and she was wearing a St. Catherine's badge."
Adrian's head snapped up.
"You saw a badge?"
"Yes."
"What name?"
"I could not read the last name."
"The first name was Vanessa."
Brooks asked when she saw the photograph.
"Three weeks ago."
"The same week Vanessa asked about Emma's trust?"
Clara nodded.
"That is when I wrote the entry."
Adrian stared at her.
"And then your journal disappeared."
"Yes."
The timing was too sharp to ignore.
Brooks requested permission to read the relevant pages aloud.
Clara agreed.
The entry described the old photograph, the hospital badge, the memory of the woman leaving Elena's room, and Clara's growing fear that Vanessa had entered Adrian's life intentionally.
Then Brooks reached the final paragraph.
Her expression changed.
"There is more."
Adrian felt his chest tighten.
Brooks read Clara's last sentence.
"I checked the old hospital discharge folder in Adrian's basement, and one page is missing from Elena's medication record."
Adrian stared at Clara.
"You went into my files?"
Clara nodded.
"I am sorry."
"Which page is missing?"
"The final medication administration sheet from the night she died."
Brooks closed the journal.
"Do you still have the rest of the folder?"
Adrian nodded.
They went downstairs together.
The file room lock showed faint scratches around the keyhole.
Inside, the cabinet containing Elena's medical records was open.
Adrian pulled out the folder.
The records were there.
The missing page was still missing.
But something new had been placed inside.
A folded copy of an old employee roster from St. Catherine's Hospital.
Someone had highlighted one name.
VANESSA HALE - PHARMACY TECHNICIAN.
Olivia stared at her father.
Adrian felt the room disappear around him.
Vanessa had not merely been in the hospital the night Elena died.
She had worked in the department that handled medication.

And someone had taken the final page showing exactly what Elena received before her heart failed.
