Chapter 13 - THE DOCUMENT ADRIAN WAS MEANT TO SIGN

Lucas Hale asked for a lawyer before police could get much more from him.

That did not stop investigators from searching the hotel room.

Inside a locked briefcase, they found copies of Adrian's signature.

Some came from public business filings.

Some came from household documents.

One had been cut from a private medical authorization Adrian signed after Elena died.

There were also draft legal forms.

Benjamin read them at the police station while Adrian waited beside him.

The first document was titled Mercer Family Continuity Agreement.

It sounded responsible.

That was the point.

The agreement claimed to create emergency safeguards if Adrian became unable to care for the children during a crisis.

It appointed an independent family coordinator.

It created temporary control over household funds.

It allowed the coordinator to retain private caregivers, authorize residential placements, and approve certain trust-related expenses.

The proposed coordinator was Diane Voss.

The alternate coordinator was Vanessa Hale.

Adrian stared at the names.

"I would never sign this."

Benjamin looked at him.

"Not calmly."

Adrian understood the rest.

The stroller incident was supposed to create panic.

Clara would be blamed.

Adrian would be told his household had become unsafe.

Vanessa would present Diane as a professional solution.

Then a carefully written agreement would appear in the middle of the crisis.

Protect Emma.

Protect Olivia.

Reduce liability.

Give professionals temporary authority.

Adrian had signed documents under pressure before.

He had trusted lawyers and assistants to place urgent papers in front of him.

Vanessa knew that.

"How much control would this give them?"

Benjamin's expression was grim.

"Too much."

"Could they take the girls' trust money?"

"Not directly."

"The girls' trusts are independently protected."

"But this agreement would authorize substantial expenditures for care, security, residential placement, medical consultants, legal services, and household management."

"Paid to whom?"

Benjamin turned a page.

A schedule of approved providers was attached.

Diane's agency appeared first.

A security company Adrian had never heard of appeared second.

A consulting company called North Vale Family Services appeared third.

Brooks entered the room.

"North Vale belongs to Lucas Hale."

Adrian looked at her.

"Vanessa's brother."

"Yes."

Benjamin continued reading.

The fee structure could have moved hundreds of thousands of dollars per month out of Adrian's personal accounts under the justification of emergency family management.

If the crisis continued for a year, the amount could exceed several million dollars.

That alone was serious.

But the final clause was worse.

If Adrian were declared temporarily incapacitated by two licensed physicians, the family coordinator would gain authority to manage portions of his personal holding company voting rights until he recovered.

Adrian looked at Benjamin.

"Two physicians?"

Benjamin nodded.

"One name is already listed."

Dr. Stephen Vale.

Brooks had already checked him.

He was Diane's cousin.

The second physician line was blank.

Adrian felt cold.

"The staged medication photos."

Benjamin nodded.

"If they convinced people you were abusing sedatives and alcohol, they could argue impaired judgment."

"The slap gives them another fact."

"The stroller crisis gives them urgency."

"And Vanessa becomes the calm fiancee trying to protect the family."

Adrian thought of Vanessa crying when he entered the house.

She had not merely been framing Clara.

She had been auditioning for the role of rescuer.

"What if I refused to sign?"

Brooks answered.

"Then we need to know how far they were willing to go."

The answer came from Lucas's briefcase.

Investigators found three versions of the agreement.

One required Adrian's real signature.

One contained a forged signature.

The third contained a notarization block already stamped by a notary named Patrice Lorne.

Patrice was another guest on Vanessa's wedding list.

She had never met Adrian.

The conspiracy was wider than one woman and one lie.

It was a network built around access, pressure, and paperwork.

Brooks cautioned that not everyone on the guest list was necessarily involved.

Adrian did not care about assumptions anymore.

He wanted evidence.

"Find out who knew what."

Brooks gave him a measured look.

"That is the plan."

When Adrian returned home, Olivia was sitting at the dining table with Elena's sealed letter in front of her.

No one had opened it.

Margaret sat beside her.

Clara and Rafael had come over at Olivia's request.

Adrian stopped in the doorway.

"Are you ready?"

Olivia nodded.

Her hands shook as she broke the seal.

The letter was six pages long.

Elena had written it in the hospital two days before she died, when doctors still expected her to go home.

She had written one letter for Olivia and another for Emma to receive later.

The letter to Olivia was not a legal document.

It did not reveal a hidden fortune.

It did not accuse anyone of murder.

It was a mother's voice preserved on paper.

Elena wrote about Olivia's stubbornness.

She wrote about the first time Olivia held Emma.

She wrote that being afraid did not make someone weak.

She wrote that smart people could still be fooled when they wanted to believe something badly enough.

Adrian had to turn away at that sentence.

Olivia kept reading.

Near the end, Elena described the hospital staff who had cared for her.

She thanked a nurse named Joan.

She thanked a respiratory therapist named Michael.

Then she wrote about a strange encounter from the previous night.

A young pharmacy employee had entered the room looking for paperwork and asked whether Adrian was still in the building.

Elena thought the question was odd.

The woman's badge said Vanessa.

Olivia stopped reading.

Everyone in the room froze.

Adrian felt his pulse hammer.

Olivia continued.

Elena wrote that the woman asked whether the baby was Adrian Mercer's daughter and whether the family was "the Mercer family from the foundation."

Elena had told her that was none of her business.

The woman apologized and left.

Elena wrote the incident because it had irritated her, not because she believed she was in danger.

Then came the sentence Vanessa had apparently feared for years.

IF ANYONE EVER ASKS, HER NAME WAS VANESSA HALE, BECAUSE I REMEMBER THINKING IT SOUNDED LIKE SOMEONE WHO SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER THAN TO ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT A SICK WOMAN'S BABY.

Olivia lowered the letter.

Clara covered her mouth.

Adrian sat down slowly.

Vanessa had known the letter might exist.

Diane knew Elena had asked for personal papers to be placed with her belongings.

Vanessa could not know what Elena wrote.

For years, she had lived with the possibility that Elena had documented her name.

That explained the search.

It explained Lucas demanding the letter.

It explained the duplicate key to the basement file room.

It explained why Vanessa had kept Elena's death certificate and why she watched the family before approaching Adrian.

Her original wrongdoing had been smaller than murder.

She had improperly entered a patient's room.

She had become obsessed with a grieving wealthy family.

She had accessed records she had no right to access.

Then, rather than disappear when fired, she had built an entirely new identity around getting closer.

The years made the obsession more dangerous.

Olivia folded the letter carefully.

"Mom knew her name."

Adrian nodded.

"Yes."

"Vanessa knew Mom might have written it down."

"Yes."

Olivia looked furious.

"She was scared Mom would expose what she did."

Benjamin, who had arrived behind Adrian, answered carefully.

"At minimum, the letter can help prove Vanessa lied about when she first encountered your family."

"It also supports the hospital timeline."

Olivia stared at him.

"Do lawyers always make everything sound smaller?"

Benjamin almost smiled.

"Good lawyers make things sound provable."

That night, police obtained a warrant for Vanessa's current residence.

She had been staying in a luxury apartment leased through Lucas's company.

Officers found designer clothing, legal files, three phones, two laptops, and a locked fireproof safe.

Inside the safe was cash.

There were forged signatures.

There were copies of Elena's probate records.

There were private photographs of Adrian.

And there was a handwritten list of dates.

One date was the charity gala where Vanessa met Adrian.

One was the day she moved into his house.

One was the scheduled wedding.

One was Emma's eighteenth birthday.

Beside Emma's eighteenth birthday, Vanessa had written a single word.

TOO LATE.

Brooks called Adrian personally.

"We do not yet know what 'too late' means."

Adrian stared through the kitchen window into the dark garden.

"I think I do."

If Emma reached adulthood, her trust became increasingly independent of family management structures.

Any plan that relied on control through guardianship would become far more difficult.

Vanessa had not only been thinking about the wedding.

She had been thinking years ahead.

Then Brooks told him one more thing found in the safe.

A photograph of Olivia's school had a date written on the back.

Tomorrow's date.

Under it, someone had written two words.

SECOND LEVERAGE.

Olivia had already been taken once.

The note suggested someone had planned to use her again.

May you like

And Diane Voss was still missing.
