Chapter 5 - THE MAN AT THE AIRPORT HOTEL

Detective Brooks did not let Adrian drive to the hotel.
She did not let him call Mateo either.
She asked him for a recent photograph, the make of Mateo's truck, and every number he had ever used.
Then she contacted the officers already heading toward Mateo's home and redirected another unit to the airport hotel.
Adrian hated standing still.
He had built his career by moving faster than problems.
He bought failing companies before competitors saw the opportunity.
He settled lawsuits before they became headlines.
He made decisions quickly and expected everyone around him to keep up.
That instinct had made him wealthy.
It had also made him slap Clara before asking a single question.
Now every part of him wanted to act, and Brooks kept forcing him to wait for facts.
It felt like punishment.
Maybe it was necessary.
At 2:06 in the morning, Brooks received a call from the hotel.
Mateo's truck was in the parking garage.
The room was registered in his name.
No one answered the door.
Brooks stepped into the hallway to continue the call.
Adrian remained in the guest room with Olivia and Clara.
Emma was asleep in the nursery with a female officer nearby.
Olivia stared at the photographs found in Vanessa's hidden box.
"Why was someone taking pictures of us?"
Adrian had no answer he could give without frightening her further.
Clara did.
"Because someone wanted routines."
Olivia looked at her.
"For what?"
Clara's eyes moved to Adrian.
She was asking him silently whether to continue.
He nodded.
"To know when people were alone," Clara said.
Olivia looked toward the hallway.
"Like Emma."
Clara did not answer.
Olivia wrapped her arms around herself.
"I thought Vanessa was annoying."
Her voice shook.
"I thought she was fake and controlling and always trying too hard to act like my mother."
She looked at Adrian.
"I did not think she was dangerous."
Adrian lowered his eyes.
"Neither did I."
Olivia's laugh was bitter.
"You thought Clara was dangerous."
The words hit exactly where she meant them to.
Clara turned toward Olivia.
"Enough."
Olivia looked surprised.
Clara's voice stayed gentle.
"Your father already knows what he did."
Adrian looked at her.
Clara did not look back.
"We need him thinking clearly now."
Adrian felt grateful and ashamed at the same time.
Olivia nodded reluctantly.
Brooks returned.
"Mateo is not in the room."
Adrian stood.
"What was inside?"
"I cannot tell you everything yet."
"Tell me what affects my children."
Brooks studied him for a moment.
"There was a laptop on the desk."
"Was Vanessa there?"
"No."
"Her attorney?"
"No."
"The journal?"
Brooks shook her head.
"Not found."
Adrian clenched his jaw.
"Then what did you find?"
The detective looked at Olivia.
"I would prefer to speak privately with your father."
Olivia stood immediately.
"No."
Adrian looked at her.
"Liv."
"No."
Her eyes filled with angry tears.
"People have been making decisions about what I should know for months."
She pointed toward the hidden box.
"My school schedule is in there."
"Pictures of me are in there."
"My mother's death certificate is in there."
She faced Brooks.
"If this is about me or Emma, I want to hear it."
Brooks considered her.
Then she nodded.
"There was a printed map of this house in the hotel room."
Olivia went still.
"A floor plan?"
"More detailed."
Brooks looked at Adrian.
"It marked the nursery, the staircase, the service entrance, the alarm panel, and the location of exterior cameras."
Clara whispered something in Spanish under her breath.
Brooks continued.
"There were handwritten time windows next to several rooms."
Adrian's voice became quiet.
"Whose handwriting?"
"We do not know yet."
"What time windows?"
Brooks took a breath.
"Your usual arrival times."
"Olivia's practice schedule."
"Clara's breaks."
"Emma's nap periods."
The room seemed to tilt.
Clara covered her mouth.
"My breaks?"
Brooks nodded.
"Someone knew exactly when you usually left Emma to move laundry from the upstairs room to the downstairs machines."
Clara stared at her.
"That is when the stroller was pushed."
"Yes."
Adrian looked toward the staircase.
The incident had happened during a gap of less than three minutes.
Vanessa had not merely seized an opportunity.
Someone had timed it.
"Where is Mateo?"
Brooks shook her head.
"We are still looking."
Adrian began pacing.
"He would not do this."
Olivia looked at him sharply.
"You said that about Vanessa."
Adrian stopped.
The correction landed.
"You are right."
He faced Brooks.
"I do not know what Mateo would do."
Clara looked toward the hidden storage box.
"I know something."
Everyone turned.
"Mateo needed money."
Adrian frowned.
"For what?"
"His wife has been sick."
"How sick?"
"Dialysis."
Adrian knew Mateo's wife had health problems, but he did not know the details.
Clara explained that Mateo had quietly taken extra weekend jobs for months.
He had once asked whether the company had an emergency employee loan program.
Adrian felt another sting of guilt.
His human resources department handled those requests.
He had never seen it.
"Could Vanessa have offered him money?" Brooks asked.
Clara looked miserable.
"Maybe."
"Would he hurt Emma?"
Clara answered immediately.
"No."
Then she stopped herself.
Adrian recognized the same mistake he had made.
Clara corrected it.
"I do not believe he would."
Brooks nodded.
"That is a safer answer."
At 2:41 in the morning, police found Mateo.
He was sitting inside a twenty-four-hour diner three blocks from the hotel.
He did not run.
He did not resist.
He asked one question when officers approached him.
"Is the baby alive?"
Brooks received permission to interview him at the local precinct.
She left the house after instructing Adrian to stay inside and maintain the temporary security measures.
Before leaving, she looked directly at him.
"Do not contact Vanessa."
"I will not."
"Do not contact Mateo."
"I will not."
"And if Vanessa contacts you, save everything."
Adrian nodded.
Brooks paused.
"Mr. Mercer, I know you want to fix this quickly."
Adrian almost laughed.
"I cannot fix what I did to Clara quickly."
Brooks glanced toward Clara.
"No."
"You cannot."
Then she left.
The house was quieter after the police vehicles pulled away.
Clara again picked up her coat.
Adrian did not ask her to stay this time.
"I will have a car take you home."
"My brother is outside."
Adrian nodded.
Olivia hugged Clara tightly.
Clara whispered something into her hair.
Then she crouched beside the nursery door and watched Emma sleep for several seconds through the opening.
When she stood, Adrian was waiting at the far end of the hallway.
"Clara."
She looked at him.
"I will not ask you to forgive me."
Her expression remained guarded.
"Good."
"But I am going to tell the police exactly what I did."
"You already did."
"I am also going to tell my attorney not to fight whatever you decide."
Clara's eyes narrowed.
"Do not turn guilt into another way of controlling what happens."
Adrian stared at her.
She stepped closer, but still kept several feet between them.
"If I press charges, it will be because I choose to."
"If I do not, it will also be because I choose to."
"You do not get to punish yourself for me."
Adrian nodded slowly.
"Understood."
Clara looked at him for another moment.
"Protect your daughters."
"I will."
"And listen before you decide who the enemy is."
That sentence followed Adrian long after she left.
At 4:12 in the morning, he sat alone in the kitchen with a cup of coffee he had not touched.
Olivia had finally fallen asleep on the sofa with Emma's monitor beside her.
Adrian opened his laptop and began reviewing every household security invoice from the past year.
He found three unusual entries.
A locksmith visit he had never requested.
A replacement key order for the west service entrance.
And a maintenance charge for the nursery camera two days after Vanessa claimed it had broken.
The invoice was signed electronically.
ADRIAN MERCER.
The signature looked like his.
It was not.
He forwarded the documents to Brooks.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He let it go to voicemail.
A minute later, a notification appeared.
One new voicemail.
Adrian played it on speaker at low volume.
Mateo's voice came through.
He sounded terrified.
"Mr. Mercer, I am sorry."
Adrian sat up.
"I took the card from the nursery camera."
His hand tightened around the phone.
"But I did not push that stroller."
There was a pause filled with ragged breathing.
"Vanessa paid me to remove the card."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"She said there was private footage of her changing clothes in the room."
"I believed her."
"I should not have."
Another pause.
"The journal is not with Vanessa."
Adrian stopped breathing.
"I took it before she could."
"I knew Clara was writing things down."
"I thought I could use it to protect myself if Vanessa blamed me."
Mateo's voice dropped to a whisper.
"Then I read one page."
The voicemail crackled.
"Mr. Mercer, Clara wrote about the night your wife died."
Adrian's entire body went cold.
Mateo continued.
"She wrote that Vanessa had been at the hospital."
The recording ended.
Adrian stared at the phone.
Vanessa had told him they first met eleven months after Elena's death.
If Clara's journal was right, Vanessa had seen his family long before that.
May you like
And she had been present on the worst night of his life.
