Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN VANESSA CHOSE

Diane Voss had spent nineteen years working in hospitals.

She had also spent the last seven years running a private child-placement agency that specialized in emergency guardianships for wealthy families.

On paper, she looked perfect.

She had licenses.

She had references.

She had no criminal record.

She had testified in family court dozens of times.

She had cared for children during divorces, custody disputes, addiction crises, and sudden parental deaths.

Vanessa's petition described her as independent, experienced, and personally unknown to the Mercer family.

That last part was technically true.

Diane had never met Adrian.

She had never met Olivia.

She had never met Emma.

But she had known Vanessa very well.

Detective Brooks obtained the old hospital employment file before the end of the day.

Diane had supervised the pharmacy technicians during the year Elena died.

Vanessa reported directly to her.

They had also rented an apartment together for four months after Vanessa lost her hospital job.

Adrian stared at the records.

"She nominated her former roommate to take my daughter."

Benjamin nodded.

"Without disclosing the relationship."

"Can we get the petition thrown out?"

"We can attack her credibility immediately."

Benjamin closed the file.

"But do not confuse a damaged petition with a finished criminal case."

Adrian had learned not to confuse anything with finished.

Every time Vanessa appeared trapped, another door opened.

Brooks asked the court for access to communications between Vanessa and Diane relevant to the guardianship request.

Elliot Crane fought the request.

He claimed the women had not spoken in years and that Vanessa chose Diane only because she found her agency through professional referrals.

Benjamin produced the apartment record.

Crane called it ancient history.

Then Olivia remembered something.

"The blue invitation."

Everyone looked at her.

She ran upstairs and returned with a box of unused wedding stationery.

Vanessa had personally handled the guest list.

Olivia flipped through rejected invitation samples until she found a sheet covered in handwritten names.

Near the bottom was "D. Voss + guest."

Adrian stared at it.

"She was invited to the wedding."

Benjamin photographed the page.

"That makes 'personally unknown' harder to defend."

Olivia kept searching.

"There is more."

She pulled out a small envelope.

Inside was a seating chart.

Diane Voss had been assigned to table twelve.

The same table as Mateo Alvarez and several household employees.

Clara frowned.

"Why would Vanessa seat a former hospital supervisor with the staff?"

No one knew.

Margaret, who had been rocking Emma in the corner, spoke without looking up.

"Because she did not want Adrian asking who Diane was."

The room went quiet.

It was the kind of simple answer that made uncomfortable sense.

Diane had been invited, but hidden among people Adrian would be unlikely to question during a large wedding reception.

The seating chart went to Brooks.

That evening, Diane Voss's attorney contacted police and offered a voluntary interview.

Diane denied knowing anything about the stroller incident.

She admitted knowing Vanessa from St. Catherine's.

She admitted they had once shared an apartment.

She admitted receiving a wedding invitation.

But she insisted they were not close.

When asked why Vanessa nominated her as Emma's emergency guardian, Diane said Vanessa called her in panic after the stroller incident and asked for a professional recommendation.

Diane said she offered her own agency because she believed a neutral placement might protect the child.

Brooks asked whether Vanessa told her she had pushed the stroller.

Diane said no.

Brooks asked whether Vanessa told her Adrian had struck Clara.

Diane said yes.

Brooks asked whether Diane knew Vanessa had worked in the hospital the night Elena died.

Diane said of course she knew.

Then Brooks asked a question Diane apparently did not expect.

"Did Vanessa access Elena Mercer's medical record after Elena died?"

Diane requested a break.

That break lasted seventeen minutes.

When she returned, she had changed one part of her story.

She admitted that Vanessa had asked questions about Elena Mercer after the death became news.

Adrian's company was already prominent.

Elena's sudden death had been covered by local media.

According to Diane, Vanessa became curious about the family after seeing Adrian on television leaving the hospital with baby Emma.

"Curious," Olivia repeated when Brooks relayed the interview.

"She built her whole life around us because she was curious?"

Brooks continued.

Diane said Vanessa asked how much the Mercer family was worth.

She asked whether Elena had life insurance.

She asked whether Adrian was dating again.

At the time, Diane dismissed it as gossip.

Then Vanessa accessed a restricted patient record and was fired.

Diane claimed she did not know which record it was.

Adrian did not believe her.

Brooks did not say whether she did.

"What about Elena's medication sheet?" Adrian asked.

"Diane denies taking it."

"Vanessa?"

"Denies through counsel."

Olivia slammed her palm against the table.

"She denies everything until you show her a video."

Adrian looked at his daughter.

"Liv."

"What?"

"You are right."

Olivia blinked, expecting correction.

Adrian continued.

"But being right does not let us skip proof."

Olivia looked away.

"I hate that."

"So do I."

Later that night, Clara prepared to leave the Mercer house because she could no longer serve as Emma's approved supervisor.

The child-services safety plan did not require her to stay.

Rafael had been waiting for that moment all day.

He carried her suitcase downstairs.

Clara hugged Olivia.

She held Emma for nearly five minutes.

Then she stood in front of Adrian.

"You have Margaret."

"Yes."

"Rachel approved her."

"Yes."

"Then I am going home."

Adrian nodded.

"You should."

Clara searched his face.

"You are not going to ask me to stay?"

"No."

A strange silence followed.

Adrian swallowed.

"I want you to stay because Emma trusts you and Olivia trusts you and I trust you."

Clara's eyes filled.

"But what I want is not more important than what you need."

Rafael looked at Adrian with slightly less hatred than before.

Clara nodded.

"Thank you."

Adrian almost said he did not deserve thanks.

He stopped himself.

Clara did not need another performance of guilt.

She turned toward the door.

Olivia suddenly called her name.

"Wait."

Clara looked back.

Olivia had gone pale.

She was staring at her phone.

"I forgot about the old family account."

Adrian frowned.

"What family account?"

"Mom's cloud account."

After Elena died, Adrian had left most of her digital accounts untouched.

Olivia still used one shared photo account because it contained years of family pictures.

When Olivia recorded videos on her phone, automatic backup sometimes copied them there whenever she connected to the house Wi-Fi.

"The stroller video is backed up there," Olivia said.

Benjamin shrugged.

"We already have the original."

"Not that one."

Olivia's hands started shaking.

"The video from before."

"What video?"

Olivia opened the cloud timeline.

The afternoon before the stroller incident, she had recorded Emma crawling across the upstairs hall.

She remembered Vanessa interrupting her and telling her to go downstairs because a delivery had arrived.

Olivia had set the phone on a shelf without stopping the recording.

The clip lasted forty-three minutes.

She had never watched the whole thing.

The backup still existed.

They connected the phone to the television.

The video began with Emma crawling and laughing.

Olivia's voice encouraged her from behind the camera.

Then Vanessa entered.

"Liv, there is a package downstairs for you."

Olivia left.

The phone remained on the shelf, angled toward the upstairs landing.

For several minutes, nothing happened.

Then Vanessa returned carrying the empty stroller.

Everyone in the room stopped breathing.

They had already seen the staircase security footage of her testing the fall.

This video showed what happened afterward.

Vanessa pulled the stroller back up.

She checked the wheels.

Then Mateo entered the frame.

Clara whispered.

"No."

Mateo looked nervous.

Vanessa spoke first.

"It rolls too far left."

Mateo stared at the staircase.

"Then do not do this."

Adrian's pulse hammered.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"You already took the money."

Mateo looked toward the hall.

"I took money to remove a camera."

"Not for this."

Vanessa stepped closer.

"You took money to keep your wife alive."

Mateo's face changed.

"Do not talk about her."

"Then fix the front wheel."

Mateo shook his head.

"No."

Vanessa smiled.

"You think saying no now makes you clean?"

Mateo walked away.

Vanessa called after him.

"If you leave me alone with this, I will tell Adrian you tampered with the stroller."

Mateo stopped.

He turned slowly.

"You are insane."

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

"I am almost married."

Mateo stared at her.

Vanessa leaned closer.

"Six more weeks, and everything changes."

The recording continued.

Mateo refused again and left.

Vanessa stood alone for nearly a minute.

Then she took out her phone and made a call.

The speaker was not loud enough to hear the person on the other end.

But Vanessa's side was clear.

"He will not help."

She listened.

"No, I can still do it."

Another pause.

"Because Adrian will believe me."

She smiled toward the empty staircase.

"He always believes the person who looks most afraid."

Adrian felt nausea rise.

Then Vanessa said one final sentence.

"If the baby survives, Clara takes the blame."

Olivia's face crumpled.

Clara covered her mouth.

Adrian stared at the screen.

Vanessa had said if.

Not when.

If the baby survives.

The call continued for another twenty seconds.

Vanessa listened more than she spoke.

Then she said a name.

"Diane, stop worrying."

Every person in the room froze.

The supposedly neutral guardian was not merely an old acquaintance.

May you like

She had been on the phone while Vanessa planned what would happen to Emma.
