Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN HE STRUCK

The second video should have weakened Clara's story.

Instead, it made her sit straighter.

When Detective Brooks played it for her, Clara did not deny a single word.

"I said that."

Vanessa let out a shaky breath from the sofa.

"Thank you."

Clara turned toward her.

"You should play the thirty seconds before it."

The room changed instantly.

Brooks looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa blinked.

"There is no thirty seconds before it."

Clara's voice stayed calm.

"There was when you recorded it."

Adrian watched Vanessa's fingers tighten around the strap of her purse.

Detective Brooks noticed too.

"Ms. Hale, where did the clip come from?"

"My phone."

"Is the original still on your phone?"

Vanessa hesitated.

"My attorney has everything."

"That was not my question."

"I sent him a copy."

"Is the original still on your phone?"

Vanessa glanced at Adrian.

"I do not consent to a search."

Brooks nodded as if she had expected that answer.

"You do not have to consent."

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

Clara leaned forward.

"Ask her why she was recording me that day."

Vanessa laughed once.

"Because you were threatening me."

"No."

Clara looked at Adrian.

"She had just taken Emma outside without telling me."

Adrian frowned.

"Outside where?"

"To the pool."

His stomach dropped.

Emma had been nine months old then.

The pool gate had been repaired that week after a latch problem.

Adrian remembered specifically telling everyone not to take either child near the pool until the contractor finished.

"Vanessa," he said.

She lifted her chin.

"I held her the entire time."

"I told everyone to stay away from the pool."

"You were being overly cautious."

Clara stared at her.

"The gate did not lock."

"I was not putting Emma in the water."

"That was not the point."

Vanessa turned to the detective.

"Do you see what I mean?"

Brooks did not answer.

Vanessa continued.

"Clara speaks to me like she owns this family."

Clara's face went white.

"I speak to you when you do something unsafe with the children."

"You are an employee."

"I was hired to protect them."

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

"You were hired to follow instructions."

"Not when your instructions put Emma in danger."

The sentence hung in the room.

Adrian remembered how often Vanessa had complained that Clara was insubordinate.

He had listened to Vanessa.

He had asked Clara to be more respectful.

He had once told Clara that Vanessa would soon be his wife and deserved authority in the house.

Clara had looked at him for a long time before quietly saying she understood.

Now Adrian finally understood what she had not said.

"Why did you never tell me about the pool?" he asked.

Clara looked at him.

There was no anger in her face now.

That was worse.

"I tried."

Adrian stared at her.

"When?"

"The night you came back from Dallas."

He remembered arriving after midnight.

Vanessa had met him in the kitchen with wine.

Clara had waited near the hallway and asked if she could speak with him.

Vanessa had smiled and said Clara was upset because they had disagreed about a routine.

Adrian had been exhausted.

He had told Clara they could talk in the morning.

In the morning, he had left before sunrise for another meeting.

Then he had forgotten.

"You should have called me."

Clara's eyes hardened.

"I did."

Adrian's chest tightened.

"I never got a call."

"Three calls."

Vanessa looked toward the window.

Olivia reached for her own phone.

"Dad, check your blocked numbers."

Adrian looked at her.

Olivia's face was suddenly focused.

"What?"

"Check your blocked numbers."

Vanessa stood.

"This is ridiculous."

Brooks raised one hand.

"Please sit down."

Vanessa did not move.

"I am not under arrest."

"No, but I am asking you to remain seated while I finish speaking to everyone."

Vanessa sat slowly.

Adrian opened the settings on his phone.

His hands had started to shake.

He scrolled to blocked contacts.

There were twenty-three numbers.

Most were spam calls he recognized.

Then he saw Clara's personal number.

He stopped breathing.

Clara saw his face.

"It is there, isn't it?"

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

"How did her number get blocked?"

Vanessa stared at him.

"Do not look at me."

"You know my passcode."

"So does Olivia."

Olivia shot to her feet.

"Are you serious?"

Vanessa shrugged.

"You are always taking his phone."

"To change the music in the car."

"You could have blocked anyone."

Olivia's mouth fell open.

Adrian stepped between them before the argument could grow.

"Enough."

He turned to Clara.

"When did you first notice you could not reach me?"

"About five months ago."

The answer hit him in the chest.

Five months ago was when Vanessa had moved into the house full-time.

It was also when the small arguments had started.

Clara was late.

Clara was rude.

Clara overstepped.

Clara spoiled Emma.

Clara encouraged Olivia to disrespect Vanessa.

Each complaint had arrived separately.

Together, they formed a pattern Adrian had been too blind to see.

Detective Brooks asked for Adrian's phone.

He handed it to her voluntarily.

She photographed the blocked contact and wrote down the number.

Then Olivia cleared her throat.

"Check mine too."

Everyone looked at her.

Olivia was staring at Vanessa.

"Clara told me she texted me last week about Emma's new allergy medication, but I never saw it."

Vanessa's face barely changed.

Olivia opened her phone.

Clara was blocked there too.

"Dad."

Her voice broke.

Adrian felt cold.

"When did that happen?"

"I do not know."

Olivia looked at Vanessa.

"But she knows my passcode."

Vanessa stood again.

"I am done with this circus."

Brooks stepped in front of her.

"Sit down."

This time, the detective's tone left no room for argument.

Vanessa slowly lowered herself back onto the sofa.

Clara rubbed her hands together.

Adrian realized she was shaking again.

He wanted to sit beside her.

He did not.

He had lost the right to assume his presence would comfort her.

"Clara," Brooks said, "tell me exactly what happened on the day of the pool recording."

Clara took a breath.

"I was changing Emma after lunch."

"Where was Ms. Hale?"

"She said she was going to make a call in the garden."

"What happened next?"

"I went to the laundry room for less than two minutes."

Clara swallowed.

"When I came back, Emma was gone."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"Gone?"

Clara nodded.

"Her carrier was gone too."

"Why did you not call the police?"

"Because I heard Vanessa laughing outside."

Clara looked at Vanessa.

"She was standing beside the pool with Emma in her arms."

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"That sounds terrifying when she says it like that."

"The gate was open."

"I opened it."

"The contractor had removed the latch."

"I was holding the baby."

Clara's voice rose for the first time.

"And you were wearing heels on wet stone."

Vanessa stared at her.

"You do not get to tell me how to walk."

Brooks interrupted.

"What happened after you found them?"

"I took Emma back inside."

"Did Ms. Hale resist?"

Clara hesitated.

"Yes."

Adrian looked sharply at Vanessa.

Clara continued.

"She told me to give Emma back."

"And you refused?"

"Yes."

"Then what?"

"She followed me into the living room with her phone out."

Clara's eyes moved toward the television.

"She kept asking why I hated her."

"Do you hate me, Clara?"

Vanessa's voice was almost playful.

Clara ignored her.

"She asked whether I thought she would hurt Emma."

"What did you say?"

Clara looked at Brooks.

"I said I thought she was careless."

"And the sentence in the video?"

"That came after she said I would be sorry if I kept trying to turn Adrian against her."

Adrian's fists clenched.

Clara looked at him only briefly.

"I told her that if she kept interfering with Emma's care, one day something terrible was going to happen."

Brooks nodded.

"Meaning?"

"Meaning Emma could get hurt."

Vanessa laughed.

"That is her interpretation now."

Clara's face flushed.

"It was always my meaning."

"Convenient again."

Detective Brooks held up a hand.

"Ms. Hale, I need you to stop interrupting."

Vanessa leaned back.

"Fine."

Brooks turned to Olivia.

"Do you remember that day?"

Olivia nodded slowly.

"I came home after soccer practice."

"Did you notice anything unusual?"

Olivia looked at Clara.

"She was crying."

Clara looked away.

Adrian felt another wave of shame.

"Did she tell you why?"

"No."

Olivia swallowed.

"Vanessa did."

Brooks leaned forward.

"What did Vanessa say?"

Olivia's eyes fixed on the woman sitting across from her.

"She said Clara was unstable."

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"I said she was emotional."

"You said she was obsessed with Emma."

"That is not the same thing."

"You told me not to be alone with her when she was angry."

Adrian turned toward Vanessa.

"You told Olivia that?"

Vanessa sighed.

"I was protecting your daughter."

Olivia's expression became disgusted.

"From the woman who just saved my sister?"

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

"You are letting a teenager and an employee rewrite months of history because of one confusing video."

Adrian stared at her.

"You pushed the stroller."

Vanessa's eyes flickered.

"I already told you I was trying to stop it."

"Then why did you lie and say Clara pushed it?"

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Brooks waited.

Clara waited.

Olivia waited.

Even the officer beside the door seemed to wait.

Vanessa finally looked down.

"I panicked."

Adrian felt something inside him go still.

It was the first partial admission.

"You panicked."

"Yes."

"So you accused Clara."

"I was scared."

"You watched me take Emma from her."

Vanessa's voice grew softer.

"I did not know you were going to hit her."

Clara flinched.

Adrian closed his eyes for a moment.

"No."

He opened them again.

"That part was mine."

Clara looked at him.

Adrian forced himself not to look away.

"I did that."

His voice cracked.

"And I will answer for it."

For the first time, Clara's expression changed slightly.

Not forgiveness.

Not trust.

But recognition.

Vanessa saw it too.

Her face tightened.

The front door opened again.

A tall man in a dark suit entered with another officer behind him.

Vanessa immediately stood.

"Elliot."

The man gave her a brief nod.

Then he introduced himself as Elliot Crane, her attorney.

He asked to speak privately with his client.

Brooks allowed them into the library.

Before Vanessa followed him, she stopped beside Adrian.

"You should get your own lawyer."

Adrian did not respond.

"I mean it."

"Why?"

Vanessa's eyes moved to Clara.

"Because by tomorrow morning, this will no longer be only about a stroller."

Then she walked into the library and closed the door.

Twenty minutes later, Brooks told Vanessa she was free to leave for the moment but instructed her not to contact Clara directly.

Vanessa packed a small overnight bag while an officer remained nearby.

She did not apologize to Emma.

She did not ask whether Emma was hurt.

She did not look at the stroller.

Before walking out, she stopped in front of Olivia.

"You think you won something tonight."

Olivia stared at her.

"I think my sister is alive."

Vanessa's lips curved slightly.

"Keep thinking that is the whole story."

Adrian stepped forward.

"Get out."

Vanessa left with her attorney.

The door closed behind her.

For the first time in hours, the house became quiet.

Clara stood and picked up her coat.

Adrian felt panic rise.

"Where are you going?"

She looked at him.

"Home."

"Please do not drive."

"I called my brother."

"Clara, I need to say something."

She shook her head.

"Not tonight."

"I am sorry."

"I heard you."

"I should have listened to you."

"Yes."

The simplicity of the answer cut through him.

"I will cooperate with whatever you decide to do about me."

Clara's eyes filled again.

"Do you know what hurts most?"

Adrian could not answer.

"It is not my cheek."

She looked toward Emma sleeping in Olivia's arms.

"For three years, I believed that if something happened to those girls, you trusted me enough to listen before judging me."

Adrian lowered his head.

"I was wrong."

Clara put on her coat.

Then she walked to Olivia and kissed the top of her head.

She touched Emma's small hand.

"Call me if she wakes up frightened."

Olivia nodded through tears.

Clara headed toward the door.

Detective Brooks stopped her.

"Ms. Reyes."

Clara turned.

Brooks held up a small plastic evidence bag.

Inside was a black memory card.

"One of my officers found this under the sofa near the stroller."

Clara stared at it.

"That is not mine."

Brooks looked at Adrian.

"Do you recognize it?"

He shook his head.

Olivia stepped closer.

"Wait."

She took one look at the card and went pale.

"That came from the nursery camera."

Adrian looked at her.

"What nursery camera?"

Olivia swallowed.

"The one Vanessa told me broke three weeks ago."

Detective Brooks looked toward the dark hallway leading upstairs.

May you like

"Then I think we need to see what was recorded before it broke."
