Chapter 7 - The Voice Of A Dead Man

Nobody in the hospital room spoke while William Pierce's voice continued through the small speaker.

Christopher had imagined hearing his father again many times after William died.

He had never imagined it would happen like this.

"Rachel came to me because she believed someone inside the family was watching her."

William paused on the recording.

"At first, I thought fear had made her suspicious."

Christopher closed his eyes.

He remembered Rachel saying almost the same thing to him during their last argument.

Someone knows where I go before I get there.

Christopher had told her the Pierce family employed security and that she was probably noticing ordinary protective surveillance.

Rachel had stared at him and asked a question he still remembered.

Protection for whom?

He had no answer then.

Now he did.

William's voice continued.

"Three weeks before Rachel died, a mechanic named Luis Ortega inspected her car after she complained that the brake pedal felt soft."

Detective Ortiz began writing.

"Ortega found a cut in the rear brake hose that had been temporarily sealed with a compound designed to fail under heat."

Christopher's throat tightened.

Rachel's fatal crash happened on a steep road after almost forty minutes of driving.

The official report said she lost control on a curve during rain.

"Ortega called me because the vehicle was leased through a Pierce company."

William coughed on the recording.

"I paid him to replace the line and keep quiet while I investigated."

Christopher looked at Ortiz.

"Why did he keep quiet after she died?"

Ortiz raised one hand.

"Let it play."

William answered the question seconds later.

"After Rachel's death, Ortega disappeared from his apartment."

Christopher felt sick.

"I found him two months later in Arizona under another name."

William's voice dropped.

"He told me a man had paid him twenty thousand dollars to say nothing about the first brake line."

Naomi leaned forward.

"Who?"

As if William could hear her, the recording continued.

"The money came through the Pierce Health Foundation."

Christopher looked at Ortiz.

Samuel Halpern had served as the foundation's medical director at the time.

William continued.

"The payment authorization carried Samuel Halpern's approval code."

Naomi swore under her breath.

"There it is."

Ortiz shook her head.

"It is a lead, not proof that Halpern ordered anything."

Christopher did not care about the distinction emotionally, but he understood it legally.

The recording went on.

"I confronted Samuel."

Static swallowed several words.

"He told me he had authorized the payment at Estelle's request, believing it was a confidential settlement involving a vendor."

Christopher almost laughed.

Even in a dead man's confession, everyone around Estelle had a reason they were innocent.

William's voice sharpened.

"I did not believe him."

The file crackled again.

"Two days later, Samuel brought me copies of private medical records concerning Rachel's pregnancy."

Christopher looked toward sleeping Emma.

"Those records had been accessed without Rachel's consent."

William paused.

"The access log showed Estelle's executive credential."

Naomi whispered one word.

"Jesus."

"That was when I understood that Estelle knew Emma was Christopher's before Christopher knew himself."

Christopher's eyes burned.

Rachel had spent months protecting a secret from him while his mother quietly built a file around it.

"I created a trust for the child because I feared Estelle would use the company to control Christopher once the truth became public."

William spoke more slowly now.

"The trust vests when Emma reaches seven years of age."

Christopher looked at Naomi.

Juliette had told the truth about that part.

"At vesting, thirty-one percent of Pierce Consolidated passes into the Emma Rachel Pierce Trust."

Ortiz stopped writing.

"Until Emma reaches twenty-five, voting authority belongs to her biological parent, provided that parent publicly acknowledges paternity and is not under a finding of incapacity or criminal fraud."

Christopher felt the trap unfold in reverse.

Estelle had needed him to hide Emma's paternity.

Then she needed him accused of fraud.

If both conditions held when Emma turned seven, someone else would control the trust.

William answered the next question.

"If Christopher is unable or unwilling to serve, voting authority passes to the court-appointed guardian of Emma's person."

Naomi looked at Christopher.

"That guardianship paper was not about custody."

"It was about the vote."

"Exactly."

William's recording continued.

"I gave the original trust instrument to Adrian Vale."

Christopher leaned closer.

"I gave a duplicate to Rachel."

His chest tightened.

"Rachel concealed her copy inside a safe accessible only by a key she carried on her bracelet."

Christopher looked toward the evidence image of the missing silver bracelet.

"If Estelle finds the key first, she may locate the duplicate."

William took a long breath.

"If you are listening to this after my death, do not trust probate records until you find Adrian."

Static burst from the speaker.

Then William said something that made Ortiz stop the file.

"Play that again," she said.

She backed up ten seconds.

William's voice returned.

"Adrian knows why Rachel's crash report was altered."

Christopher frowned.

"Altered by whom?"

Ortiz resumed playback.

"I cannot put the name on this recording because I do not know who may hear it."

Christopher clenched his jaw.

Even dead, his father was still protecting information through caution.

"But the person who changed the report still works for the family."

The recording ended.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

Only a click.

Christopher sat in silence.

Then Naomi's phone alarm sounded.

The family court hearing would begin in thirty minutes.

Christopher almost laughed at the cruelty of moving from a murder conspiracy into a custody hearing without time to absorb either.

Emma woke as nurses prepared her discharge papers.

Her lungs were clear enough for release with strict monitoring and a follow-up appointment.

Christopher dressed her in dry clothes Yvette's security escort had delivered from a store.

They attended the hearing remotely from a private conference room inside the hospital.

The new judge was Alicia Grant, who immediately disclosed that she had no financial or professional connection to the Pierce family.

Naomi presented the conflict involving Judge Halpern.

Estelle appeared by video from an undisclosed location with Martin Keene beside her.

She looked perfectly rested.

That infuriated Christopher more than panic would have.

Keene began by describing Christopher as a wealthy man trying to rewrite six years of legal history because of an emotional incident.

"Mr. Pierce has never been listed as Emma Monroe's father on any public record."

Christopher stared at the screen.

Keene continued.

"He allowed Mrs. Pierce to function as the legal guardian while presenting himself publicly as a generous family friend."

Emma sat beside Christopher coloring a picture of a dog.

She could not understand the legal language, but Christopher saw her glance up every time someone said her name.

Naomi responded.

"The petitioner is under active investigation in connection with an attempt on this child's life."

Keene objected.

"No charge has been filed against Mrs. Pierce."

"Because she fled before detectives could interview her."

"She left her residence after being threatened by her adult son."

Christopher nearly stood.

Naomi put a hand on his arm.

Judge Grant looked directly at Estelle.

"Mrs. Pierce, are you willing to provide your current location to law enforcement?"

Estelle smiled faintly.

"On advice of counsel, I will respond through the proper process."

"That was not my question."

Keene interrupted.

"Your Honor, my client has received credible threats."

"From whom?"

"Mr. Pierce."

Christopher stared at the screen.

Estelle did not blink.

She had arranged an attempted drowning, then presented herself to the court as the endangered parent.

Naomi submitted the recording from the pool cabana and the portion of William's statement referring to Emma's trust.

Keene attacked both as unauthenticated.

Then he attacked Yvette.

He called her an elderly employee with a grievance.

He called Emma confused.

He called Juliette unstable.

He called Christopher deceptive.

Every person who challenged Estelle became defective the moment their testimony mattered.

Judge Grant listened without expression.

Then an email arrived from the legal DNA laboratory.

Naomi opened it.

Her shoulders dropped slightly.

"Your Honor, we have the expedited paternity result."

Keene objected again.

The judge overruled him.

Naomi uploaded the certified report.

The result showed a probability of paternity greater than 99.999 percent.

Christopher looked at Emma.

She was still coloring.

To her, nothing had changed.

To the legal system, everything had.

Judge Grant vacated the removal order.

She recognized Christopher's emergency parental standing pending formal amendment of Emma's birth record.

She ordered that Emma remain in his sole temporary custody.

Then she issued a protective order prohibiting Estelle from approaching Emma or contacting her directly or through third parties.

Estelle's face did not move.

That frightened Christopher.

Judge Grant addressed her.

"Mrs. Pierce, do you understand this order?"

"Perfectly."

The hearing ended.

Christopher expected Estelle's video feed to disappear.

Instead, she leaned closer to the camera.

"Christopher."

Naomi immediately said not to engage.

Christopher did anyway.

"What?"

Estelle smiled.

"Congratulations."

He waited.

"You have finally admitted she is yours."

Something in her tone made Naomi look up sharply.

Estelle continued.

"Which means the board can now prove you lied to shareholders for six years."

The screen went black.

Christopher's phone began vibrating before he could respond.

One alert after another appeared.

Pierce Consolidated shares had been halted pending a material corporate disclosure.

A news headline followed seconds later.

PIERCE CEO HID BIOLOGICAL HEIR WHILE COMPANY FUNDS PAID CHILD'S EXPENSES.

Another alert appeared.

Then another.

Naomi stared at her own phone.

"She released the audit."

Christopher read the opening claim.

Eighteen million dollars had allegedly been diverted through a private account connected to Rachel Monroe and Emma.

He looked at Naomi.

"I never moved eighteen million dollars."

Naomi's expression turned grim.

"Then somebody made it look like you did."

Christopher glanced at Emma.

May you like

He had just won the right to keep his daughter beside him.

And in the same minute, Estelle had begun building the criminal case that could take him away from her.
