Chapter 4 - The Woman Waiting In The Parking Garage

Emma screamed when the deputy moved toward the bed.

It was not a loud, angry scream.

It was the terrified sound of a child who believed the adults around her had finally come to deliver the threat she had been hearing for months.

"Daddy, please."

Christopher held her against his chest.

"Nobody touches her until my attorney gets here."

The deputy stopped two steps away.

Karen Bell looked miserable.

"Mr. Pierce, I am not trying to punish Emma."

"Then do not traumatize her because a judge signed a paper based on fraud."

"I have an order."

"And I have a detective investigating an attempted homicide."

Bell lowered her voice.

"Those are separate legal processes."

Christopher almost lost his temper at the absurdity of the sentence.

The woman suspected of arranging Emma's disappearance had managed to make herself the child's legal protector on paper.

The system was not asking whether the paper made sense.

It was asking whether the stamp was valid.

The hospital door opened hard enough to hit the wall.

Naomi Reed entered carrying a laptop bag and three folders.

She was fifty-one, compact, silver-haired, and wearing the same dark suit Christopher had seen her in at a board meeting that morning.

"Nobody removes that child."

The deputy looked at her.

"Ma'am."

"Naomi Reed, counsel for Christopher Pierce and, subject to confirmation of biological parentage, counsel seeking immediate representation for Emma Pierce."

Bell handed her the order.

Naomi read it once.

Then again.

Then she smiled without humor.

"This is clever."

Christopher stared at her.

"Clever?"

"I did not say lawful."

Naomi pointed to a paragraph on the second page.

"The petition says Emma's biological father is unknown."

Christopher looked at Bell.

"They told the court I am not her father."

"The birth certificate does not name a father," Bell said.

"I know what the birth certificate says."

Naomi turned another page.

"The petition also identifies you as an unrelated adult who has exercised informal care with Estelle's permission."

Christopher felt fury move through him.

For six years, Estelle had criticized him for hiding the truth about Emma.

Now she was using that secrecy as a weapon.

"How do we stop this?"

Naomi looked at Emma.

"We establish standing before they can move her."

"How?"

"Emergency paternity affidavit, DNA sample, and a motion to stay the placement based on immediate danger from the purported guardian."

Bell folded her arms.

"A DNA result will not be available tonight."

Naomi looked at her.

"No, but a sworn acknowledgment combined with a pending criminal investigation may give another judge enough reason to suspend enforcement."

"Judge Halpern already ruled."

"Judge Halpern should never have touched this case."

Bell's eyes narrowed.

"Why?"

Naomi placed the order on the counter.

"Because his brother is the personal physician of the petitioner and a compensated consultant to Pierce Consolidated."

Christopher stared at her.

"Compensated how?"

Naomi did not look away from Bell.

"Two hundred forty thousand dollars last year through a wellness subsidiary."

Christopher had never approved that arrangement.

Bell's face changed.

"Can you prove that?"

"I can prove it in seven minutes."

Naomi opened her laptop.

The deputy stepped back.

For the first time since he entered the room, he looked uncertain about enforcing the order.

Naomi worked quickly.

She attached corporate payment records, Detective Ortiz's preliminary incident number, Christopher's sworn declaration of paternity, and a statement from Yvette describing Estelle's recorded comments.

Then she filed an emergency motion electronically with the county's rotating after-hours judge.

"Now we wait."

Christopher hated those words.

Emma was too exhausted to keep crying.

She sat in his lap with her head beneath his chin.

Naomi took a sealed DNA collection kit from her bag.

Christopher raised an eyebrow.

"You carry those?"

"I stopped at a twenty-four-hour legal testing service on the way here."

She swabbed Christopher's cheek, then asked Emma for permission before collecting hers.

Emma looked at Christopher.

"Does it hurt?"

"No."

"Will it prove you're my daddy?"

Christopher felt something break inside his chest.

"I already know I am your daddy."

Emma looked at Naomi.

"Then why does a paper have to know?"

Nobody in the room had a good answer.

Forty-three minutes later, the after-hours judge granted a temporary stay.

Emma would remain at the hospital with Christopher until a hearing the next afternoon.

Bell exhaled visibly.

The deputy put away the copy of the removal order.

Christopher did not celebrate.

Estelle had come within minutes of using his own secrecy to separate him from his daughter.

That meant she had more moves prepared.

Naomi seemed to reach the same conclusion.

"We need to assume every structure around you is compromised."

"The company?"

"Possibly."

"My accounts?"

"Possibly."

"My security?"

"Definitely."

Christopher looked toward the window.

The hospital parking garage was visible across the street.

"How many people knew about the guardianship document?"

"I did not."

"My father's probate team?"

"Maybe."

"Adrian Vale?"

"Almost certainly."

Christopher told her about Vale's disappearance before William's will entered probate.

Naomi stopped typing.

"That was not in the file I reviewed when your father died."

"What was not?"

"The fact that Vale disappeared before probate."

"You thought he retired too?"

"I was told he resigned because of health problems."

"By whom?"

Naomi's face became grim.

"Estelle."

Christopher laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

Every road led back to his mother.

His phone rang again.

This time it was the head of his personal security detail, Owen Briggs.

Christopher answered.

"Tell me you found Estelle."

"No, sir."

"Then tell me something useful."

"We found her car."

Christopher stood.

"Where?"

"North garage at Pierce Tower."

"Is she there?"

"No."

"When did the car arrive?"

"Who drove it?"

"We are checking footage."

Christopher looked at Naomi.

"Send me everything."

"There is something else."

Briggs sounded uncomfortable.

"Say it."

"Your executive access was revoked twelve minutes ago."

Christopher frowned.

"Revoked by whom?"

"Corporate security says the board's emergency committee."

Naomi stood.

"Put him on speaker."

Christopher did.

Briggs continued.

"Your office badge, remote server credentials, company vehicle authorization, and aviation privileges are suspended pending an internal review."

Christopher stared at the phone.

"Internal review of what?"

"They would not tell me."

Naomi was already checking her email.

A new message appeared.

She opened it and swore softly.

"What?"

"The board has called an emergency session for seven tomorrow morning."

"On what basis?"

Naomi turned the screen toward him.

The notice accused Christopher of concealing a material heir, misusing corporate resources to support an undisclosed dependent, and creating legal exposure through false public statements about Emma's status.

Christopher read the last paragraph twice.

Pending investigation, Estelle Pierce had been appointed interim executive chair.

"She is running the company while the police are looking for her."

Naomi's expression was cold.

"Apparently."

"How can she chair a meeting if nobody knows where she is?"

Naomi pointed to the line beneath the notice.

Attendance permitted by secure video conference.

Christopher understood.

Estelle did not need to enter Pierce Tower.

She could dismantle him from wherever she was hiding.

Emma stirred against his shoulder.

Christopher sat back down immediately.

The little girl opened her eyes.

"Are we going home?"

Christopher hesitated.

The mansion was a crime scene.

His mother controlled the staff directory, security systems, and possibly hidden areas beneath the house.

"Not tonight."

Emma looked relieved.

That hurt more than fear would have.

"Good."

Christopher kissed her forehead.

"You never have to sleep there again if you do not want to."

Emma thought for a moment.

"Can we get Mommy's bracelet first?"

Christopher looked at her.

"You are sure it is in the red room?"

Emma nodded.

"Grandma put it in the wall."

Naomi stopped reading the board notice.

"In the wall?"

Emma pointed with one finger as if tracing a shape.

"Behind the picture with the horse."

Christopher knew the painting.

A dark oil portrait of his grandfather on horseback had hung in the old music room since he was a child.

Detective Ortiz said the red room was empty.

If the painting had been removed, whatever was behind it could still exist.

Christopher called Ortiz.

No answer.

He called again.

Still nothing.

Then his phone displayed an incoming video file from Briggs.

"What is this?" Naomi asked.

Christopher opened it.

The footage came from a hospital parking garage camera.

A woman in a long coat stepped from behind a concrete pillar forty minutes earlier.

Her face was partially hidden beneath a scarf.

She stood beside a black sedan and watched the hospital entrance.

Then she lowered the scarf.

Christopher froze.

It was Juliette.

"That is impossible."

Naomi leaned closer.

"Security escorted her to police custody."

Christopher checked the time stamp again.

Juliette had supposedly been detained at the estate more than an hour before the video was recorded.

His phone rang.

Detective Ortiz.

He answered.

"Juliette is in the hospital garage."

Ortiz went silent.

"No, she isn't."

"I am looking at her."

"Then you are looking at someone who resembles her."

Christopher stood.

"Why?"

Ortiz's next words changed the entire night.

"Because the woman we took from your estate gave us identification in the name of Claire Benson."

Christopher gripped the phone.

"What are you saying?"

"I am saying Juliette never made it to our station."

Naomi stared at him.

Ortiz continued.

"And whoever security handed to us was not Juliette."

Christopher looked back at the frozen image on his phone.

Juliette had not been led away helplessly.

May you like

She had planned her escape before Christopher ever reached the pool.

And now she was somewhere inside the hospital complex where Emma was sleeping.
