Chapter 11 - The Man Who Guarded The Wrong Family

Christopher did not need Juliette to say the name twice.
He saw it in her face before she spoke.
"Owen Briggs."
For a moment, the underground archive seemed to lose all sound.
Naomi stared at Juliette.
Detective Ortiz stopped examining the back passage.
Christopher felt something colder than anger.
Owen Briggs had managed his personal security for nine years.
He knew Christopher's travel schedule.
He knew Emma's school routes.
He knew the hotels they used, the vehicles they trusted, and the people assigned to protect the child tonight.
"You are lying."
Juliette gave him a tired look.
"I lied for Estelle for a long time."
She pressed one hand against her injured arm.
"I am not lying about this."
Christopher pulled out his phone.
Ortiz caught his wrist.
"Do not call him."
"Emma is at the hotel."
"With Yvette and two officers."
"Briggs knows where."
"Then we call the officers, not Briggs."
Ortiz dialed one of the off-duty deputies guarding the suite.
No answer.
She tried the second.
No answer.
Christopher's face went numb.
"Call the hotel."
Naomi was already doing it.
The front desk answered.
The clerk said the hotel was evacuating part of the seventh floor because of a reported gas leak.
Christopher looked at Ortiz.
"There is no gas leak."
Ortiz asked the clerk who reported it.
The answer came after a short hold.
A man identifying himself as Owen Briggs from Pierce Security.
Christopher was moving before Ortiz ended the call.
They left two local deputies with Adrian and Juliette and raced back toward the marina.
Ortiz called city police and ordered units to the hotel.
Christopher called Yvette.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then someone answered.
No one spoke.
Christopher heard breathing.
"Yvette?"
A small voice whispered.
"Daddy?"
Christopher's heart slammed against his ribs.
"Emma."
"Mr. Owen says we have to leave."
Christopher gripped the phone.
"Listen to me very carefully."
"Okay."
"Where is Yvette?"
"She is yelling at him."
Christopher could hear muffled voices in the background.
A man said they had to evacuate immediately.
Yvette answered that nobody was moving Emma without police.
Christopher closed his eyes in relief.
"Emma, stay with Yvette."
"Okay."
"Do not go anywhere with Owen."
Silence.
"Emma?"
"He heard you."
Christopher felt the blood drain from his face.
Briggs's voice came through the phone.
"Chris."
Christopher had heard that voice during board threats, overseas trips, and nights when Emma had a fever.
It had always meant someone competent was handling the danger.
Now it was the danger.
"Step away from my daughter."
Briggs sighed.
"You do not understand what is happening."
"I understand enough."
"Estelle is not the only person you should be afraid of."
"You are going to wait for police."
"No."
"Then you will spend the rest of your life running."
Briggs was quiet.
"I have been running for six years."
Christopher looked at Ortiz.
She was listening on speaker.
"From what?"
"From the thing I did for your mother."
Christopher felt his anger sharpen into focus.
"Rachel's car."
Briggs did not answer.
He did not need to.
"You cut the brake line."
"I was told the car would fail in a parking lot."
Christopher nearly shouted.
"Do not give me that."
"I was told she would be scared and leave town."
"She died."
"I know."
"And you came to work for me afterward."
Briggs's voice cracked for the first time.
"Because Estelle ordered me to."
"To protect me?"
"To watch you."
Christopher looked out the windshield as trees blurred past.
Every private conversation with Briggs suddenly felt contaminated.
Every security concern he had ever shared could have been delivered directly to Estelle.
"Why are you trying to move Emma?"
"Because Danton is coming for her."
Ortiz gestured for Christopher to keep him talking.
"How do you know?"
"Because he called me."
"From where?"
"I do not know."
"What did he say?"
"Estelle wants the child transferred before noon."
Christopher's stomach turned.
"Transferred where?"
"I do not know."
"Then why would I trust you to take her anywhere?"
Briggs raised his voice.
"Because I am trying to undo one thing before I go to prison for another."
Christopher heard Yvette in the background.
"Give me the phone."
Then a struggle.
Emma cried out.
Christopher stood halfway from his seat before the moving vehicle forced him back.
"Owen!"
The line went dead.
Ortiz called responding officers.
They were three minutes from the hotel.
Christopher was twenty-seven minutes away.
Those minutes felt impossible.
At the hotel, Yvette refused to leave the suite.
Briggs insisted a gas leak made the floor unsafe.
Yvette demanded to see a firefighter.
Briggs could not produce one.
That delay saved them.
The first patrol officers reached the seventh floor before Briggs got Emma into the service elevator.
He surrendered without a fight.
Christopher learned that by phone twelve minutes later.
His entire body loosened so suddenly that Naomi had to steady him.
"Emma is safe," Ortiz said.
Christopher closed his eyes.
"Put her on."
Emma sounded angry rather than frightened now.
"Mr. Owen lied."
"Yes."
"He said the hotel was going to explode."
Christopher felt fresh rage.
"It was not."
"Yvette said he was full of beans."
Naomi almost laughed.
Christopher managed a breath.
"Yvette was right."
"Are you still coming back?"
"Yes."
"Good."
Emma paused.
"I ate your pancake."
Christopher laughed once despite everything.
"That is okay."
When they reached the hotel, Christopher held Emma for so long that she finally complained he was squeezing too hard.
He apologized and loosened his arms.
Yvette stood nearby, shaken but furious.
"I knew something was wrong when Mr. Briggs would not let me call the front desk."
Christopher looked at her.
"You saved her again."
Yvette shook her head.
"Emma saved herself."
"How?"
"She hid my phone under the blanket and called you."
Christopher looked down at Emma.
She shrugged.
"You said call if people act weird."
Christopher kissed the top of her head.
He hated that a six-year-old had already learned that lesson.
Detective Ortiz interviewed Briggs in a conference room downstairs.
Christopher watched through the glass for part of it.
Briggs admitted he had worked for Estelle before joining Christopher's detail.
He admitted tampering with Rachel's brake line.
He insisted Estelle told him the vehicle would be discovered before Rachel drove far enough to be hurt.
Ortiz asked why he believed her.
Briggs stared at the table.
"Because I wanted the money."
The honesty was uglier than any excuse.
He admitted receiving two hundred thousand dollars through a security consulting company.
He admitted helping Estelle access Christopher's old executive authorization token.
That connected him to the eighteen-million-dollar transfers.
Christopher felt Naomi tense beside him.
"There goes her audit story."
"If he is telling the truth."
"His bank records will tell us."
Ortiz asked about the second Rachel recording.
Briggs looked genuinely confused.
"I never saw it."
"Juliette says you were with Estelle when Rachel threatened to expose the pregnancy."
Briggs nodded slowly.
"I was outside the library."
"Did you hear the conversation?"
"Some."
"Did Rachel record it?"
"I do not know."
"What did Estelle say?"
Briggs rubbed his face.
"She told Rachel that Christopher would lose the company if the child became public."
"Anything else?"
Briggs looked through the glass.
He could not see Christopher, but Christopher felt as if he could.
"She told Rachel that accidents happen to women who confuse love with leverage."
Christopher turned away.
Naomi followed him into the hall.
"You okay?"
"No."
It was the first honest answer he had given anyone all morning.
Ortiz joined them ten minutes later.
"Briggs is cooperating."
"Because he got caught."
"Usually how it starts."
"Did he say where Danton is?"
"No."
"Estelle?"
"No."
"The trust copy?"
"He says Danton plans to deliver it to Estelle today."
Naomi frowned.
"Why does she need a paper copy if the trust is irrevocable?"
Ortiz looked at Christopher.
"Because according to Briggs, she has a forged revocation ready to replace it."
Christopher felt his jaw tighten.
"She wants the real document destroyed so hers becomes the only surviving version."
"Exactly."
Yvette appeared at the end of the hall.
She was holding something wrapped in a hotel towel.
"Mr. Pierce."
Christopher walked toward her.
"What is it?"
Yvette unfolded the towel.
Inside was a small porcelain music box shaped like a blue bird.
Christopher recognized it immediately.
Rachel had bought it before Emma was born.
"Where did you get that?"
"I did not."
Yvette looked unsettled.
"Emma did."
Christopher turned.
Emma stood in the doorway of the suite.
"It was in Mr. Owen's bag."
Christopher stared at the music box.
May you like
Briggs had come to the hotel carrying one of Rachel's oldest possessions.
And he had not mentioned it once during his confession.
