Chapter 6 - The Safe Behind The Horse

Christopher refused to leave Emma unprotected, so the mansion came to him through live video.

Detective Ortiz returned from the failed chase for Juliette furious and empty-handed.

Juliette had vanished through a loading corridor seconds before hospital security sealed the exits.

Ortiz wanted to know whether Christopher had helped her escape.

He answered by handing over the envelope.

The detective read Estelle's handwritten line twice.

"After seven, the girl owns what should have been mine."

Ortiz looked up.

"This is motive."

"It is also handwriting on a piece of paper."

"You are learning."

"From watching my mother survive things that should have ended anyone else's career."

Naomi photographed every page before Ortiz sealed the originals into evidence.

Then they joined a secure video call with officers at the Pierce estate.

A body camera showed the stripped red room in harsh white light.

The wall where the horse portrait had once hung was partially opened.

Behind decorative paneling sat a compact steel safe no larger than a medicine cabinet.

Its only visible lock was a narrow oval opening.

Christopher stared at it.

"That is the bracelet key."

Ortiz shook her head.

"Then we have a problem."

"What?"

"The bracelet is missing."

Christopher looked at Emma.

She was sitting upright in bed eating crackers while a nurse checked her oxygen level.

"Emma says it is in that room."

The officer on video swept his camera across the bare floor.

Nothing remained except dust marks showing where furniture and shelving had stood.

"Who emptied the room?" Christopher asked.

"We are checking service logs."

"Check loading dock cameras."

"Already gone."

Christopher frowned.

"Gone how?"

"Deleted from the local server between 4:03 and 4:11 this afternoon."

The timing was precise.

The deletion began fifteen minutes before Emma entered the pool.

Estelle had not reacted to disaster.

She had scheduled around it.

Naomi leaned toward the screen.

"Can you open the safe without the key?"

Ortiz answered.

"Yes, but we are waiting for a forensic locksmith so we do not damage whatever is inside."

Christopher hated every necessary delay.

His phone buzzed with a message from Owen Briggs.

Pierce Tower security had identified the person who drove Estelle's car into the corporate garage.

It was Dr. Samuel Halpern.

Christopher showed Naomi.

Her expression hardened.

"The family physician."

"And the judge's brother."

Ortiz heard them.

"Send me that."

Christopher forwarded the image.

"Find Halpern before he disappears too."

Ortiz's phone rang before she could answer.

She listened, then turned toward the window.

"They found Mateo Ruiz."

Christopher stood.

"Alive?"

"Yes."

Relief lasted only a second.

"Where?"

"Beneath the mansion."

Ortiz put the call on speaker.

An officer described a narrow utility passage extending from the hidden freight lift toward an old service tunnel beneath the east lawn.

Mateo had been found unconscious behind a locked maintenance gate.

He had a head injury and significant blood loss, but he was breathing.

An ambulance was taking him to another hospital.

Christopher looked at the video feed.

"Who hurt him?"

"He was conscious for less than a minute."

"Did he say anything?"

The officer hesitated.

"He said, 'Do not let her reach the lake.'"

Christopher thought of Juliette's promised lake property.

The Pierce family owned a large house on Lake Marlowe two hours north of the city.

William had used it as a retreat.

After his death, Estelle rarely visited.

At least that was what Christopher believed.

"Send officers to the lake house."

Ortiz was already typing.

Naomi looked at him.

"If the trust documents were moved out of the red room, that is the obvious destination."

"Too obvious for my mother."

"Maybe she wanted it to be obvious."

Christopher considered that.

Estelle was best at winning when everyone else believed they had discovered her plan.

She gave them one answer so they would stop searching for another.

A nurse entered and asked the adults to lower their voices.

Emma had stopped eating.

She was watching the screen.

Christopher muted the call.

"What is wrong?"

Emma pointed toward the body camera image.

"That is not Grandma's red room."

Christopher looked at the screen.

"It is the old music room."

Emma shook her head.

"No."

"You said the red room was upstairs."

"It is."

"Then what is different?"

Emma slid from the bed and walked closer to the laptop.

She pointed at the far wall.

"There was a little door there."

The officer moved the camera.

"Where?"

Emma pointed again.

"Next to the window."

The officer pressed his hand against the wall.

Nothing moved.

He tapped along the paneling.

One section sounded hollow.

Christopher leaned closer.

The officer pried at a molding strip.

A narrow seam appeared.

Behind the decorative wall was a child-sized door.

Naomi stared.

"What the hell is that?"

Emma answered before anyone else.

"Grandma's listening room."

Christopher turned to her.

"Her what?"

Emma looked as if she had said something ordinary.

"She sits there when people talk."

Christopher felt a chill move through him.

"Did you ever go inside?"

"One time."

"What did you see?"

"TVs."

"How many?"

Emma held up both hands, then gave up counting.

"A lot."

Christopher unmuted the call.

"Open it."

The officer forced the hidden door.

Inside was a narrow surveillance room with a wall of dark monitors, two computers, and shelves filled with labeled storage drives.

Christopher stared in disbelief.

His mother had built a private monitoring station inside the mansion.

"Turn nothing on," Ortiz ordered.

"Photograph labels only."

The camera moved closer.

MASTER BEDROOM.

STUDY.

BOARD DINING ROOM.

GUEST EAST.

POOL CABANA.

Christopher's stomach tightened.

Then another label appeared.

RACHEL - ARCHIVE.

Christopher pointed at the screen.

"Stop."

The officer froze.

"That one."

A removable drive sat inside a clear evidence case marked with Rachel's name and a date range spanning the final eighteen months of her life.

Christopher looked at Naomi.

"She recorded Rachel."

Naomi's face had gone pale.

"Possibly for more than a year."

Christopher thought of every private conversation Rachel might have had in the mansion.

Every argument.

Every confession.

Every moment when she believed no one else was listening.

The forensic locksmith arrived at the estate while officers cataloged the surveillance room.

Ortiz instructed him to bypass the hidden safe.

The camera remained on his hands.

After several minutes, the safe door clicked open.

Christopher stopped breathing.

Inside were three objects.

A sealed letter addressed to Christopher in William Pierce's handwriting.

A small digital recorder.

And Rachel's silver bracelet.

Emma gasped.

"Mommy's."

Christopher looked at her.

She was smiling for the first time since the pool.

Then the lights on the video feed flickered.

The officer swore.

The image went black.

"What happened?" Christopher demanded.

No response came from the laptop.

Ortiz called the officer.

No answer.

A second call failed.

Then a third.

Christopher stood.

"The estate lost power again."

Naomi looked at the hospital clock.

"Someone is still inside that property."

Ortiz's radio erupted with overlapping voices.

A fire alarm had activated in the east wing.

Smoke was entering the hidden service tunnel.

The officers in the red room were evacuating.

Christopher stared at the black screen.

"The safe."

Ortiz spoke into her radio.

"Take the contents with you."

A voice crackled back.

"Negative."

"Repeat."

"The safe is empty."

Christopher looked at Ortiz.

"We just watched them open it."

The radio crackled again.

"Detective, someone came through the hidden passage during the blackout."

Christopher felt his pulse hammer.

"Who?"

No one answered.

Then another officer shouted over the radio.

"We have one item on the floor."

Ortiz grabbed the microphone.

"What item?"

"The recorder."

Christopher exhaled.

"And the bracelet?"

"Gone."

"The letter?"

"Gone."

Christopher closed his eyes.

Someone had risked entering a burning wing to steal William's letter and Rachel's bracelet.

They had left the recorder behind.

That did not make sense unless the recorder was worthless.

Or unless whoever stole the other items did not know what was on it.

Ortiz ordered the officer to secure the device immediately.

An hour later, a forensic technician extracted the first playable file and sent a protected copy to Ortiz.

Christopher sat beside Emma's bed as Ortiz pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then William Pierce's voice emerged from the speaker.

Older than Christopher remembered, but unmistakable.

"Christopher, if you are hearing this, then Estelle has already tried to erase Emma from this family."

Christopher stopped breathing.

William continued.

"And if she has reached that point, Rachel's death was not the accident I allowed you to believe it was."

Emma was asleep by then.

Christopher looked at Naomi and Ortiz.

Neither woman moved.

May you like

On the recording, William inhaled slowly.

"I know who tampered with Rachel's car."
