Chapter 14 - The Conversation After Rachel Left

Christopher waited until Emma was asleep behind a closed bedroom door before playing the rest of Rachel's recording.

Yvette stayed with her.

Naomi came to the hotel in person.

Adrian sat beside Detective Ortiz at the dining table.

Nobody spoke when Christopher pressed play again.

Estelle's voice returned first.

"Rachel thinks William can protect her."

Samuel Halpern answered.

"William can make this very difficult if he goes public."

"He will not."

"You sound certain."

"William has spent forty years protecting the Pierce name."

Estelle gave a quiet laugh.

"He will not burn it down for Christopher's mistake."

Christopher felt Naomi glance at him.

He kept his eyes on the laptop.

Rachel had not been a mistake.

Emma had not been a mistake.

But that was how Estelle had reduced them whenever money entered the conversation.

Halpern lowered his voice on the recording.

"The medical file is not enough to prove Christopher is the father."

"I do not need proof."

"Then what do you need?"

"Control."

Christopher's jaw tightened.

The word explained nearly everything.

Estelle continued.

"If Rachel remains afraid, she stays quiet."

"And if she does not?"

A long pause followed.

Then Estelle said the sentence that ended any remaining doubt.

"Then Owen makes sure she leaves before the child becomes useful to William."

Naomi closed her eyes.

Adrian whispered something Christopher could not hear.

The tape continued.

Halpern sounded nervous.

"I agreed to contain the medical records."

"And you will."

"I did not agree to hurt anyone."

"Then do not hurt anyone."

Estelle's tone became almost gentle.

"Just make sure the right questions are never asked afterward."

Christopher felt sick.

Halpern had spent years calling Rachel's death tragic while knowing exactly why the investigation stayed shallow.

The family physician had attended dinners in Christopher's home.

He had treated Emma's fevers.

He had examined William during his final illness.

All while carrying this secret.

A door opened on the recording.

A woman's voice entered.

"Estelle, stop."

Christopher recognized it immediately.

Eleanor Shaw.

Naomi looked at him.

Juliette had said the recording would expose someone Christopher still trusted.

She had been right about the identity.

She had been wrong about the role.

Eleanor sounded furious.

"Rachel just left here in tears."

Estelle answered calmly.

"This is not your concern."

"You made it my concern when William asked me to protect the trust vote."

Christopher leaned closer.

Halpern spoke.

"Eleanor, you should leave."

"You should be ashamed to be in this room."

Christopher felt a strange rush of relief.

Eleanor had not joined the plan.

She had challenged it.

Then Estelle's voice changed.

"Careful."

Eleanor went quiet.

"You remember Zurich, don't you?"

Adrian frowned.

Naomi whispered.

"What is Zurich?"

Christopher shook his head.

Estelle continued.

"You remember the pension vote."

Eleanor's voice became colder.

"That was twenty-two years ago."

"And still very illegal if described by the right person."

"William knows."

"William knows part of it."

A long silence followed.

Then Estelle spoke again.

"If you interfere, I will make sure your grandchildren know why their trust accounts disappear."

Christopher clenched his fists.

This was how Estelle built loyalty.

Not by inspiring it.

By finding the one thing each person feared losing and placing her hand around it.

Eleanor's voice trembled with anger.

"If anything happens to Rachel, I will tell William everything."

"Then pray nothing happens."

A door slammed.

Eleanor had left.

The recording continued for another nine minutes.

Briggs returned briefly.

He confirmed he had access to Rachel's vehicle.

Estelle told him to make her afraid enough to leave the city.

The language stayed deliberately vague.

Nobody said the word kill.

Nobody needed to.

Halpern asked what would happen if police investigated.

Estelle said she had already spoken to someone who could ensure the crash, if there was one, looked ordinary.

Captain Warren Pike.

The retired officer Adrian had named.

Ortiz stopped the recording long enough to call another detective.

"Pick up Pike now."

Then she resumed.

The final minutes contained something Christopher did not expect.

Estelle asked Halpern whether the child could ever claim William's shares if Rachel died.

Halpern said he did not know.

Estelle answered with one sentence.

"Then Adrian Vale becomes the next problem."

The recorder shut off.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Christopher looked at Adrian.

"That is why your house burned."

Adrian nodded.

"I suspected."

"You knew enough to disappear, but you left me with her."

The accusation came out before Christopher could soften it.

Adrian absorbed it without defending himself.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because William was dead, Rachel was dead, and I believed Estelle would kill me too if I surfaced."

"So you waited."

"I waited until Emma was close enough to seven that the trust could be enforced without relying on probate."

Christopher stood.

"She almost did not make it to seven."

"I know."

"You could have warned me."

Adrian's eyes filled with regret.

"I sent three warnings."

Christopher froze.

"When?"

"One every year for the last three years."

"I never received them."

"I sent them to your private security office."

Owen Briggs.

Christopher laughed bitterly.

"Of course you did."

Every attempted warning had gone directly to Estelle's man.

Ortiz closed the laptop.

"This recording changes the criminal investigation."

Naomi nodded.

"It also changes the corporate case."

Christopher looked at her.

"How?"

"It proves Estelle knew the trust existed before William died."

"She can still claim William revoked it."

Adrian shook his head.

"Not legally."

"Why?"

"Because the trust was irrevocable once the shares were transferred."

"Then why does she need the forged revocation?"

Naomi answered.

"Because corporate records have treated the shares as if they remained in William's estate."

She opened her laptop.

"If she creates a convincing enough paper trail before we restore the original trust, she may persuade the transfer agent and a court that the transfer was never completed."

Christopher frowned.

"But you said it was completed."

Adrian nodded.

"It was."

"Where is the independent record?"

"There should be one at the transfer agent."

Naomi began searching.

Pierce Consolidated had changed transfer agents twice since William's death.

The original agent had merged with another firm.

Archived records existed, but retrieval could take days.

Christopher looked at the clock.

Emma's seventh birthday was six weeks away, but Estelle was moving as if she had only hours.

"Why is she rushing now?"

Naomi's phone rang before anyone answered.

Eleanor Shaw.

Naomi put her on speaker.

Eleanor's voice sounded strained.

"Christopher, I need to tell you something before you hear it from the company."

Christopher looked at the recording device on the table.

"I heard Rachel's tape."

Silence.

Eleanor exhaled.

"Then you know I was there."

"You knew my mother threatened Rachel."

"Yes."

"And you said nothing to me for six years."

Eleanor's voice broke slightly.

"I was afraid."

Christopher thought of Yvette saying the same thing.

Fear had built Estelle's empire more effectively than money ever had.

"What do you need to tell me?"

Eleanor became businesslike again.

"Your mother has called another emergency board meeting for midnight."

Naomi sat upright.

"For what purpose?"

"A merger."

Christopher frowned.

Pierce Consolidated had not been in active merger talks.

"With whom?"

"A holding company called Northstar Meridian."

Adrian looked alarmed.

"I know that name."

"What is it?" Christopher asked.

"A shell structure used by one of Estelle's old family offices."

Eleanor continued.

"The proposed transaction issues enough new shares to Northstar that every existing shareholder is diluted by more than two-thirds."

Naomi went pale.

"Emma's thirty-one percent becomes roughly nine percent."

Christopher understood.

Estelle no longer needed to erase Emma's trust if she could erase its power.

"Can the board approve it?"

"With the votes Estelle claims to control, yes."

"Those votes belong to Emma."

"We know that."

Eleanor's voice became quiet.

"The board does not, not yet."

Christopher looked at Adrian.

"We have Rachel's recording."

"That proves motive and conspiracy, not the share transfer itself."

"Then we stop the meeting."

Naomi was already opening a new legal filing.

"We need an emergency injunction before midnight."

Christopher's phone buzzed.

A message from Victor Danton appeared.

It contained a photograph of the original trust document lying on a table.

Beside it was Rachel's silver bracelet.

The message beneath the photograph contained six words.

Withdraw the injunction or both disappear.

Christopher stared at the screen.

May you like

Estelle no longer had to pretend she was not destroying evidence.

She only had to destroy it faster than Christopher could prove what it said.
