Chapter 5: The Promise That Was Finally Kept
One year later, the hospital lobby looked much the same as it had on the day everything changed.
Another frightened family rushed through the entrance carrying a sick child.
The father reached the reception desk in tears.
"I don't have enough money."
"Please help my son."
Before the receptionist could answer, Michael stepped forward.
"Take the child to the emergency room."
"Now."
The father looked at him in disbelief.
"I'll pay you back."
Michael smiled gently.
"Right now, your child needs a doctor."
"Everything else can wait."
Nearby, Emily stood beside her grandfather, holding his hand.
She looked up proudly.
"That's my dad."
The old man smiled through tears.
"He learned that from his mother."
Michael glanced at them both and felt the emptiness inside him finally disappear.
He had lost six precious years with his daughter.
He could never get them back.
But he could honor Sarah's love by making sure no child was ever denied a chance to live because of fear, poverty, or regret.
