Chapter 3: The Truth Sarah Left Behind

Several days later, Emily's condition improved enough for her to leave intensive care.

While packing a small bag, the old man removed a faded wooden box from his backpack.

"I've kept this for six years."

He handed it to Michael.

Inside were dozens of unopened letters.

Every one addressed to him.

Michael opened the first.

Sarah's handwriting appeared instantly.

"If you're reading this, then I couldn't keep my promise to survive."

His vision blurred.

Another letter.

"Please don't hate your father. He wanted to tell you everything."

Another.

"If our daughter ever asks about me, tell her I loved her before I ever held her."

At the bottom of the box rested a small velvet pouch.

Inside was a silver necklace.

Michael recognized it immediately.

He had given it to Sarah on the day he proposed.

Wrapped around it was one final note.

"Find happiness again... but never let Emily believe she was unwanted."

Michael silently closed the box.

Years of anger dissolved into grief.

He finally understood.

There had never been betrayal.

Only sacrifice.
