Chapter 2: A Father's Fight

Inside the emergency room, machines filled the silence with urgent beeps.

Emily lay motionless beneath heated blankets.

Her tiny fingers barely moved.

Michael washed his hands with shaking fingers before stepping beside the bed.

The nurse looked at him.

"We suspect septic shock."

"Blood pressure is falling."

Michael nodded once.

His voice became calm.

"Start broad-spectrum antibiotics."

"Prepare cooling therapy."

"Draw blood cultures."

The medical team moved instantly.

His hands no longer trembled.

Years of experience took over.

But every time he looked at Emily's face...

He saw Sarah.

The same eyes.

The same smile hidden beneath the fever.

Hours passed.

Outside the room, his father sat alone.

Still wearing the dusty jacket from the farm.

Still whispering silent prayers.

Finally...

The monitor changed.

Emily's heartbeat stabilized.

Her oxygen levels slowly climbed.

The nurse smiled.

"She's responding."

Michael let out the breath he had been holding for hours.

Then he walked outside.

His father immediately stood.

Neither of them spoke.

Michael stepped forward.

And for the first time in nearly twenty years...

He hugged his father.

The old man broke down.

"I thought I'd lost both of you."

Michael held him tighter.

"We've both lost enough."

Just then, a weak little voice came from inside the room.

"Grandpa..."

"And..."

She looked at Michael.

"...who are you?"

Michael's eyes filled with tears.

He knelt beside the bed.

"My name is Michael."

Emily smiled faintly.

"Grandpa talks about you."

"He says you're the best doctor in the world."

Michael gently held her tiny hand.

"I hope one day..."

"I'll also become the best dad."

Emily looked confused.

But she squeezed his finger.

May you like

Without realizing...

She had already accepted him.
