Chapter 1: The Secret That Stole Six Years
The hallway outside the emergency room became unnaturally quiet.
Michael stared at the old man.
His father's weathered face carried the weight of years filled with regret.
"What did you mean?" Michael asked, barely able to speak.
"The girl... she isn't just your niece?"
The old man slowly shook his head.
"No."
His voice cracked.
"Emily... is your daughter."
The words struck harder than any diagnosis Michael had ever delivered.
He stepped backward.
"No."
His lips barely moved.
"That's impossible."
His father lowered his eyes.
"Six years ago, after you left for medical school, Sarah came to the farm."
Michael's heart skipped.
Sarah.
The woman he had loved more than anyone.
The woman who had suddenly disappeared without a single explanation.
"She was already pregnant," his father continued. "She begged me not to tell you."
Michael felt his knees weaken.
"Why?"
"She had leukemia."
The world blurred.
His father's voice sounded distant.
"She had just been diagnosed. She believed she wouldn't survive long enough to raise the baby. She refused to destroy your future. She made me promise."
Michael covered his mouth.
"No..."
"I begged her to tell you."
"I even called."
"But she stopped me every time."
Tears rolled down the old man's cheeks.
"She died eight months after Emily was born."
Michael closed his eyes.
Every unanswered letter.
Every sleepless night.
Every birthday he had spent wondering why Sarah had vanished.
She had never abandoned him.
She had been trying to protect him.
The emergency room doors suddenly burst open.
A nurse hurried toward them.
"Doctor!"
Michael turned immediately.
"Her temperature is over one hundred and five."
"We're losing her."
Without another word, he ran.

Not as a doctor.
As a father.
