Chapter 4: Learning to Be a Family
Three months later, the old farmhouse echoed with laughter again.
Michael had reduced his hospital hours and moved closer to the countryside.
Every weekend belonged to Emily.
He learned how to braid her hair.
How to help with homework.
How to make pancakes that weren't burned.
His father watched quietly from the porch.
One afternoon, Emily ran across the yard holding a school drawing.
"Look!"
"It's our family!"
Michael smiled.
The picture showed three people holding hands beneath a bright sun.
A little girl.
A grandfather.
A father.
In the corner was another figure with angel wings.
"Who's she?" Michael asked softly.
Emily smiled.
"Mom."
"Teacher says people we love never really leave."
Michael looked toward the sky.
