Chapter 9 - The Burial Reference

The doctor cut the fake Castellano ring from Vanessa's finger at two fourteen in the afternoon.
She did not cry when the metal split.
She only watched the sapphire fall onto a white towel and whispered,
"Good."
The skin beneath the band was bruised purple.
Mara picked up the broken ring with tweezers.
"Do not throw that away."
Vanessa gave her a tired look.
"I was planning to melt it."
"Later."
Dante turned the two halves beneath a desk lamp.
A tiny black dot sat beneath the setting.
He stopped moving.
"Tracker."
I leaned closer.
The device was smaller than a grain of rice.
Vanessa went pale.
"That's how he found us?"
"Not here," Dante said.
"The safe house is shielded."
"But Astor Street?"
"Possibly."
Mara looked at me.
"Or Roman planted it because he expected the ring to move eventually."
The idea was almost funny.
Roman had turned even his symbol of possession into surveillance.
"Can we make him think it is still moving?"
Dante understood immediately.
"Yes."
"Then put it somewhere useful."
Vanessa looked at me.
"Where?"
I opened Roman's cloned view of my phone on a clean laptop.
Mara's technician had isolated the malware without disconnecting it.
Roman could still see selected information if we allowed it.
That meant we now had two leashes he believed were attached to us.
The tracker in the ring.
The clone on my phone.
"We give him a destination," I said.
Dante crossed his arms.
"You want him to think we found the grave."
"We need him to move Isabella."
"Or kill her."
The words struck hard.
I looked at Luca's photograph again.
Isabella's wrists were bound, but there was no visible injury.
Roman had not hidden her face.
He wanted us to know she was alive.
That meant she still had value.
"He needs something from her."
Luca had stopped answering after the third message.
We did not know whether he had been captured, escaped, or switched sides again.
Mara placed the real ring on a black cloth under a magnifying lens.
Inside the band, after M M, faint marks appeared.
17-4-11.
Not a date that made sense for my mother.
Not an account number.
Dante stared at it.
"Cemetery grid."
"How do you know?"
"Chicago family plots often use section, lot, and grave numbers."
Mara searched an offline copy of public cemetery records.
"Graceland uses section and lot references."
Vanessa sat up.
"The Castellanos have a mausoleum there."
"I know," I said.
I had attended Roman's grandfather's funeral in that cemetery during our first year of marriage.
The family mausoleum stood near a lake beneath old trees.
Marble angels guarded the entrance.
Roman had held my hand too tightly through the service.
At the time I thought grief made him need me.
Now I wondered whether he had been afraid I would wander too close to the wrong grave.
Mara found a record.
"Section seventeen."
"Lot four."
She paused.
"Grave eleven belongs to a woman named Sofia Caruso."
My mother's childhood surname.
The room went still.
"Date of death?"
"Nineteen ninety-five."
"Cause?"
"Not listed."
Vanessa looked at the real ring.
"So that is her."
"Maybe."
Dante shook his head.
"Roman already knows the burial reference."
"Vanessa said he did."
"Then why has he not dug it up?"
That question changed the room.
Mara looked at the screen.
"Because the grave is watched."
"By whom?"
Dante answered.
"Isabella."
He took out his phone.
"Or because opening it triggers something else."
I thought of my father.
Doors inside doors.
Keys inside rings.
Secrets that only became visible after someone tried to steal them.
"We do not go there first," I said.
Dante nodded slowly.
"Good."
"We send the tracker there."
Mara smiled without humor.
"Better."
We put the tracking device inside a courier envelope with a cheap metal ring to keep the weight similar.
One of Dante's security men drove it toward Graceland Cemetery while carrying my cloned phone in a shielded pouch that could be opened at intervals.
To Roman, the two signals would appear to travel together.
To anyone physically watching the courier, he looked like a nervous attorney with bad posture.
We waited.
Twenty-seven minutes later, three black SUVs left Castellano Tower.
One belonged to Roman's corporate security division.
Another was registered to a company controlled by Luca.
The third had no plates.
"He took the bait," Vanessa whispered.
Dante shook his head.
"Someone did."
At the cemetery, the courier parked near the main gate and walked toward section seventeen.
A drone operated by Dante's team watched from high enough to disappear against the gray sky.
The first SUV stopped outside the north entrance.
Four men got out.
The second vehicle continued past without stopping.
The unmarked SUV drove toward the service road behind the mausoleums.
"Which one has Isabella?" I asked.
Mara enlarged the drone feed.
The windows were too dark.
Then the rear door of the unmarked SUV opened.
A woman in black stepped out between two men.
Isabella.
Her hands were no longer tied.
She walked without resistance.
Roman stepped out behind her.
My chest tightened.
"He brought her himself."
Dante's voice was low.
"Because he expects you to be there."
"He wants the real ring."
"And your biometric access if there is another lock."
Vanessa stared at Roman on the screen.
"He will know soon that the courier is not Evelyn."
"We only need him away from the tower," I said.
Mara looked at me.
"For what?"
I held up Judge Lane's recorder.
"For this to become impossible to erase."
While Roman went to the cemetery, Mara sent authenticated copies of Lane's recording to three law firms, two board members, a federal prosecutor, and an investigative journalist.
She also filed an emergency preservation notice covering Castellano security logs and financial records.
Roman could still fight.
He could no longer make the evidence disappear quietly.
At the cemetery, Roman's men reached the courier.
The drone feed had no audio, but the body language was clear.
One man seized the envelope.
Another searched the courier.
Roman opened the envelope himself.
He saw the cheap ring.
His head lifted toward the sky.
Even from hundreds of feet above, I could feel his anger.
My clean phone rang seconds later.
Roman.
I answered.
"Hello."
"Where are you?"
"Not where you hoped."
"You think this is clever?"
"A little."
His breathing was controlled.
"You used Vanessa's ring."
"Your tracker, actually."
Silence.
"You put surveillance inside my wedding ring."
"It was mine."
"That sentence explains our entire marriage."
I watched the drone feed while speaking.
Isabella stood ten feet from him.
She was looking toward the mausoleum, not at Roman.
"Let your mother go."
"She is here willingly."
Isabella turned suddenly and slapped him.
The drone camera caught it perfectly.
I almost smiled.
"She looks willing."
Roman touched his cheek.
"You have the original ring."
"Maybe."
"Evelyn."
"You have said my name more in the last twenty-four hours than in the previous year."
"Do not test me."
"You lost the right to give me tests."
Roman looked toward the grave markers.
"Your father lied to you."
"Which lie are we discussing?"
"Sofia."
"Your mother says he helped kill her."
"My mother says whatever keeps her useful."
Isabella turned toward him.
He had clearly said that loud enough for her to hear.
"Did my father help kill Sofia?"
Roman paused.
"He helped bury her."
"That was not my question."
"Ask Dante."
I looked at Dante beside me.
His face hardened.
Roman continued.
"Vale's father was there too."
Dante went still.
"What?" I asked.
Roman laughed softly.
"You really should demand better allies."
Then the drone feed shook.
A flash erupted near the cemetery service road.
The image spun as the drone lost control.
The screen went black.
"What happened?"
Dante grabbed his phone.
Before anyone answered, an alert appeared from the security team.
EXPLOSION - NORTH SERVICE ROAD.
My call with Roman had disconnected.
I dialed him back.
No answer.
Then Luca called.
His voice was breathless.
"Evelyn."
"Where are you?"
"At the cemetery."
"What exploded?"
"Roman's SUV."
My stomach dropped.
"Is Isabella alive?"
"Yes."
"Roman?"
A long pause.
"I don't know."
Then a gunshot sounded through the phone.
Luca cursed.
"Who is shooting?"
"Not Roman's men."
"Then whose?"
Luca's answer came in a whisper.
May you like
"Your father's."
