Chapter 17 - The Other Recording

Judge Stephen Lane looked like a man waiting for a sentence.
No one in Mara's office spoke after he said Luca's name.
Dante stood beside the empty evidence case.
Michael Vale sat very still.
Isabella remained frozen on the secure video screen.
Only Luca's audio tile was dark.
He had disconnected seconds before the accusation.
"Start at the beginning," I said.
Lane rubbed both hands over his face.
"The recording was made automatically."
"By what?"
"My office line."
"Why was your office line recording private calls?"
He looked ashamed.
"Because I had begun recording Roman."
Vanessa's chair remained empty beside him.
The fact that she had stolen the ring should have made me furious.
Instead, I kept thinking about the message she sent.
I'M SORRY.
Not goodbye.
Not trust me.
Sorry.
The kind of word people use when they have already decided to do something they know will hurt.
"What did Luca say on the call?" I asked.
Lane swallowed.
"He called me after your father's car went through the guardrail."
The room tightened.
"After?"
"Yes."
"How long after?"
"Minutes."
"Was my father alive?"
Lane looked down.
"I do not know."
"That is not good enough."
"Evelyn."
His voice shook.
"I was not there."
"Then tell me what you heard."
Lane closed his eyes.
"Luca was panicking."
"He said Roman had told him to follow Enzo."
"He said the brake line had been changed."
My fingernails pressed into my palm.
"Changed how?"
Michael answered quietly.
"Cut partially."
I looked at him.
"You knew?"
"I learned later."
"Everyone learns later in this family."
No one answered.
Lane continued.
"Luca said he had tried to warn Enzo after Dante left the roadside meeting."
Dante looked up sharply.
"I never saw him."
"He was following from another car."
"Why?"
"Roman told him to make sure Enzo drove home alone."
A cold heaviness settled in my chest.
Roman had arranged the night like a stage.
My father on the road.
Dante delayed.
Luca watching.
Lane waiting to alter the report.
Every person placed where Roman needed them.
"Did Luca warn him?"
Lane hesitated.
"He said he tried."
"That is not the same as doing it."
"No."
"What happened after the crash?"
Lane's face went gray.
"Luca reached the car first."
I could hear my heartbeat.
"Was my father alive?"
Lane whispered,
"Yes."
The word broke something open inside me.
I had been told the impact killed my father instantly.
Roman had repeated that detail at the funeral because he said it would comfort me.
No pain.
No fear.
Instant.
Another gift wrapped around a lie.
"How alive?"
"Luca said Enzo was conscious."
Dante swore softly.
"What did Luca do?"
Lane looked at me.
"He called Roman."
Not an ambulance.
Roman.
"And Roman said?"
Lane's voice became barely audible.
"Wait."
The room disappeared.
"Wait how long?"
"Ten minutes."
I stared at him.
"Why?"
"Roman said help was already coming."
"Was it?"
"No."
"What did Luca do?"
Lane did not answer.
I knew.
"He waited."
"Yes."
My stomach turned.
Ten minutes.
Six hundred seconds.
A man trapped in a wrecked car while another man stood nearby obeying his brother.
Dante stepped away from the table.
Michael looked older with every sentence.
Isabella covered her mouth on the screen.
"I did not know," she whispered.
"Roman told me Enzo died on impact."
"He told everyone," I said.
Lane reached into his jacket and removed a small key.
"The original recording is in a deposit box."
"Where?"
"First Chicago Private Bank."
Mara looked at him.
"Why did Vanessa need the ring?"
Lane's eyes closed.
"Because Roman has the deposit box key."
"Then what does the ring have to do with it?"
"The bank was part of the old Castellano family system."
"Certain boxes can be opened with the family seal if a physical key is missing."
I looked at the empty case.
"The original ring."
"Yes."
Dante picked up his phone.
"We go to the bank."
Mara shook her head.
"No."
"Vanessa is already going."
"Which means Roman expects us there."
"He has the recording."
"Lane just said the recording is in the bank."
"Roman has the key."
Mara leaned forward.
"And Vanessa has the seal."
"That is a meeting, not a theft."
I understood.
"She is trading the ring for the recording."
Lane looked at me.
"She asked me where it was before the board call."
"I told her."
"Why?"
He looked toward the empty chair.
"Because she stopped asking my permission a long time ago."
There was pride and grief in the same sentence.
I knew that combination too.
I called Vanessa again.
Voicemail.
Then a text arrived from an unknown number.
MIDNIGHT.
DRAKE BALLROOM.
COME ALONE.
Under it was a photograph of Vanessa standing in front of the deposit box wall at First Chicago Private Bank.
Roman stood behind her.
The original sapphire ring was on the counter between them.
Luca stood on the other side.
He looked directly at the camera.
I enlarged the image.
His face was bruised.
His wounded shoulder sagged.
He was not there willingly.
"Roman has both of them," I said.
Dante stared at the photograph.
"He has the ring."
"And maybe the recording."
Mara took my phone.
"This is bait."
"Everything is bait."
"Then stop biting."
I looked at the time.
Eight thirty-seven.
Three and a half hours until midnight.
"No."
Mara's eyes narrowed.
"Evelyn."
"Roman thinks he understands what pulls me."
"My father."
"Vanessa."
"Luca."
"The ring."
"Dante's father."
I looked around the room.
"He keeps building traps out of people because people are the only things he thinks we cannot sacrifice."
Dante's expression sharpened.
"You want to make him believe we will sacrifice one."
"Yes."
Isabella spoke from the screen.
"Which one?"
I looked at her.
"The company."
Roman cared about control more than freedom.
More than money.
Possibly more than survival.
If I offered to return the voting rights, he would keep listening long enough to make a mistake.
Mara did not like the plan.
That was becoming a requirement.
We drafted a transfer agreement that looked real enough to survive a glance and incomplete enough to be legally useless without three missing schedules.
Mara embedded document-tracking marks in each page.
Mercer arranged agents inside the hotel disguised as staff and guests.
Dante placed his own people in service corridors Roman's security did not officially know existed.
Michael insisted on coming.
Dante refused.
They argued until Isabella interrupted over video.
"Both of you are impossible."
Michael looked at the screen.
For the first time, they saw each other directly.
Thirty-eight years of secrecy passed through one silent stare.
"Bella," Michael said.
Isabella's face changed.
"Michael."
No one else spoke.
Then she asked,
"Did you really tell him?"
"I did."
"That he is yours?"
Michael smiled faintly.
"He was always mine."
Dante looked away.
Isabella closed her eyes.
"I am sorry."
Michael's smile vanished.
"So am I."
There would be no easy reunion.
That made it more believable.
At ten, Mara received confirmation that federal agents had secured copies of the ledger and Lane's first recording.
At ten thirty, the board formally removed Roman's building access privileges.
At ten thirty-two, Roman entered Castellano Tower using a maintenance badge and deleted nothing because the servers were already mirrored.
At eleven, he sent me another photograph.
Vanessa sat in the Drake ballroom at the same table where my birthday cake had been placed.
Luca stood near the windows.
Roman had returned every centerpiece exactly as it had been the night before.
White roses.
Gold candles.
Champagne.
Even the string quartet had been replaced by speakers playing the same music.
He was rebuilding the scene.
He wanted control of the memory.
At eleven forty, I stood in the hotel service corridor wearing a black dress Mara had found in a boutique downstairs.
No jewelry.
No wedding ring.
No purse.
Exactly how I had left the party.
Dante stood beside the service door.
"You do not have to go in first."
"Yes, I do."
"Why?"
"Because he invited his wife."
I looked at him.
"And I need him to meet Evelyn Moretti instead."
Dante nodded once.
"I will be thirty seconds away."
"Make it sixty."
"No."
"Dante."
"Thirty."
I almost argued.
Then I saw fear in his face.
Not fear of Roman.
Fear of repeating the delay that had cost Claire and my father.
I let him keep thirty seconds.
I entered the ballroom at eleven fifty-nine.
Roman stood beneath the chandelier.
Vanessa sat at the table.
Luca stood behind her with one hand pressed to his wounded shoulder.
The real sapphire ring was on Roman's little finger because it did not fit anywhere else.
He smiled.
"Happy birthday again."
I placed the transfer agreement on the table.
"Give me the recording."
Roman touched the ring.
"You first."
"You wanted the company."
"I want my life back."
"You built your life out of other people's."
"And now you sound like your father."
"Good."
Vanessa looked at me.
Her eyes moved once toward the ceiling.
A camera.
Then toward the left service door.
She knew we were not alone.
Roman noticed the glance.
He stepped behind her and put one hand on her shoulder.
"Still trying to save everyone, Evelyn?"
"No."
His eyebrows lifted.
"I am trying to stop you."
Luca laughed quietly.
Roman turned.
"Something funny?"
"You."
Luca's face was pale.
"You lost the company, your board, your wife, your mistress, your mother, and half your security team in two days."
"Yet you still arrange flowers."
Roman walked toward him.
"You should be careful."
Luca looked at me.
"I was careful once."
His voice changed.
"For ten minutes."
I went cold.
Roman stopped.
Luca swallowed.
"Tell her."
Roman's eyes hardened.
"Tell her what you made me do."
"I made you do nothing."
Luca laughed once.
"There it is."
He looked at me.
"That is what he has said for four years."
"I chose to wait."
"He told me help was coming, but I chose to believe him."
"Your father was alive."
My throat tightened.
"Did he speak?"
Luca nodded.
Tears appeared in his eyes.
"He asked me to call you."
The room disappeared.
"What?"
"He said your name."
"He told me to call his daughter."
"I had your number."
"I did not call."
I could not breathe properly.
Roman's face remained expressionless.
"Why?"
Luca's voice broke.
"Because Roman said if I touched my phone before his man arrived, he would tell our father I had been stealing from the family accounts."
"I was thirty years old and still terrified of losing a father who never loved me."
"So I waited."
"When I finally called an ambulance, Enzo had stopped answering me."
The anger that came was so large it felt calm.
I looked at Roman.
"You knew he was alive."
Roman's eyes stayed on mine.
"For a few minutes."
"You let him die."
"The brake line killed him."
"You ordered it cut."
"Prove it."
Vanessa reached beneath the table.
Roman grabbed her wrist.
"Do not."
She looked up at him.
"Too late."
A small recorder fell from her hand onto the carpet.
Roman stared at it.
Luca smiled through tears.
May you like
"She already has."
