Chapter 11 - Isabella's Son

Dante did not speak for seven minutes.

Luca drove toward an industrial warehouse on the river that belonged to one of his companies.

Mara made three calls to preserve the deed and arrange medical help for Carlo, though none of us knew if he was still alive.

I watched Dante stare at the false cassette in his hand.

His face had become unreadable in the way Roman's face became unreadable before hurting someone.

The similarity unsettled me now.

"Did you know?" I asked.

"No."

"Did your father ever say anything?"

"No."

Luca laughed bitterly.

"Welcome to the family."

Dante looked at him.

"Do not."

"What?"

"Make this a joke."

Luca's smile disappeared.

"You think I am laughing because it is funny?"

He pulled into the warehouse and killed the engine.

"I spent my whole life wondering why my mother could look at Roman with fear, at me with pity, and at you with something I could never name."

Dante opened the car door.

"I am not discussing this with you."

"Of course not."

Luca got out too.

"That would require admitting the great Dante Vale might belong to the same rotten family he built his career fighting."

Dante turned so fast that Mara stepped between them.

"Enough."

Her voice cut through both men.

"We have a dead or dying witness, a kidnapped woman, a federal obstruction recording, a controlling-interest deed, and a chief executive who may be responsible for multiple murders."

"You can compare childhood trauma after we secure the evidence."

Luca muttered,

"Lawyers really know how to ruin a moment."

Inside the warehouse, an office had been converted into a temporary operations room.

Security monitors covered one wall.

A technician examined the false cassette.

"Encrypted cellular module."

"Can you trace where the transmission came from?" Dante asked.

"Maybe."

"Do it."

Mara photographed every page of the deed and sent encrypted copies to separate counsel.

I studied the photographs from the grave.

One showed Sofia with Isabella and my father beside a lake.

Another showed Michael Vale holding a baby.

The back was blank.

I looked closer.

The baby could have been Dante.

"When were you born?"

Dante looked at me.

"January 1988."

The photograph had a processing date from March 1988.

I handed it to him.

His fingers tightened around the edge.

Michael Vale looked younger than Dante was now.

Beside him, Isabella rested one hand on the baby's blanket.

She was not looking at Michael.

She was looking at the child.

"Your mother?" I asked.

"I was told she died during childbirth."

"Name?"

"Anna."

"Did you ever see a photograph?"

"One."

"Was it Isabella?"

Dante's eyes stayed on the picture.

"No."

Luca leaned against the desk.

"Could have been staged."

Dante looked at him.

"You are helping less every time you speak."

The false cassette suddenly emitted a tone.

The technician raised a hand.

"Incoming packet."

A new audio file appeared on his laptop.

Isabella's voice began.

"If you are hearing this, I have failed to keep Roman away from the grave."

The recording was calm but strained.

"Dante, Michael Vale was your father in every way that mattered."

Dante's jaw tightened.

"He took you from me because I asked him to."

Luca sat down slowly.

"Your biological father was Vittorio Castellano."

Roman and Luca's father.

No one moved.

That made Dante their half-brother.

"I was twenty-three."

"Vittorio was already married."

"He believed sons were property and daughters were currency."

"When I became pregnant, I knew he would take you."

"Michael helped me disappear for six months and registered you as his child."

"Anna Vale was his cousin."

"She agreed to be named as your mother after losing her own baby."

Dante closed his eyes.

Isabella continued.

"Vittorio eventually learned the truth."

"Sofia helped convince him you had died."

"That was the beginning of the secret that destroyed all of us."

The recording paused.

Then Isabella's voice changed.

"Roman discovered part of the truth when he was nineteen."

"He discovered Sofia was alive."

"He also discovered you existed."

"He did not know where."

"He spent years trying to identify you because under the old family trust, Vittorio's eldest surviving son could challenge Roman's succession."

Dante opened his eyes.

Luca gave a humorless laugh.

"You are older than him by eleven months."

"Roman's birthday is December 1988," I said.

Dante looked at him.

"I do not want his succession."

Luca shrugged painfully.

"Neither did I."

"He still spent thirty years making sure I could never have it."

Isabella's recording continued.

"Michael moved you away from Chicago."

"Enzo helped fund the relocation."

"Sofia kept the legal proof."

"When she was killed in 2006, the proof disappeared."

"Enzo believed Vittorio took it."

"I believed Roman did."

"I was wrong about one thing."

"Roman did not kill Sofia."

The room tightened.

"Vittorio did."

Luca whispered a curse.

Their father had died five years ago from a stroke.

Conveniently beyond prosecution.

"Roman helped him cover it."

"That was Roman's first true crime for the family."

"He was nineteen and terrified."

"I told myself that explained what he became."

"It did not excuse it."

Then came the sentence that changed Dante's face.

"Claire found proof."

He leaned toward the speaker.

"Claire discovered that Roman had used Sofia's old accounts to move money after her death."

"She also found a payment to the mechanic who later worked on Enzo Moretti's car."

My hands went cold.

"Michael wanted to take the evidence to the authorities."

"Dante, you asked him to wait."

Dante looked at me.

His guilt was suddenly visible.

"Roman used the delay."

"Claire died first."

"Enzo died three months later."

"Michael disappeared two weeks after that."

Dante stood abruptly.

"My father is dead."

The recording kept playing.

"No, Dante."

Isabella's voice cracked for the first time.

"Michael Vale is alive."

Dante stared at the speaker.

"Roman has had him for four years."

The room seemed to lose air.

Luca stood.

"Where?"

Isabella answered from the recording.

"I do not know."

"But I know why."

"Michael is the only living witness who can authenticate Sofia's final ownership transfer and the proof of Dante's birth."

"Roman cannot kill him until he destroys both claims."

The audio ended.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Dante walked to the far wall and put both hands against it.

I had never seen him lose control.

He did not shout.

He did not break anything.

His shoulders simply stopped looking indestructible.

I understood that kind of collapse.

It was the kind that happened quietly when too many years of grief suddenly became a lie.

I approached him but stopped before touching him.

"You believed he was dead."

"I identified a body."

His voice was rough.

"After a warehouse fire."

"Dental records?"

"Yes."

Mara spoke carefully.

"Records can be changed."

Dante turned.

"I buried him."

"Then Roman gave you a body to bury."

Luca looked sick.

"That sounds like him."

Dante rounded on him.

"Where would he keep someone for four years?"

"I don't know."

"Think."

"I am thinking."

Luca pressed one hand against his injured shoulder.

"Roman owns properties through shells I have never seen."

"Medical facilities?"

Mara asked.

Luca looked at her.

"One."

Dante stepped closer.

"Where?"

"Wisconsin."

My mind caught on the word.

The photograph of Sofia by Lake Geneva.

"Near the lake?"

Luca looked at me.

"Yes."

"Roman bought a private rehabilitation center there after our father died."

"He said it was an investment."

Dante was already reaching for his phone.

The technician interrupted.

"Wait."

He pointed at the screen.

"The cassette module received one more data packet."

A set of coordinates appeared.

Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

Then a final text line.

MICHAEL HAS 48 HOURS.

Below it was a photograph.

Michael Vale sat in a wheelchair beside a window.

He was older, thinner, and unmistakably alive.

Behind him stood Roman.

May you like

And Roman was holding Isabella by the throat.
