Chapter 15 - Saint Aurelia

We did not go to the Drake.

That was what Luca expected.

Instead, Mara met us at Saint Aurelia Church at two in the morning with six security officers and a federal agent who refused to give me his first name.

The church stood dark behind iron fencing.

Stone saints watched the street with weathered faces.

A single light burned above a side door.

Agent Mercer showed us a warrant.

"Judge Lane's recording and the rehab facility records were enough for an emergency search."

Dante looked at him.

"You knew about Michael?"

"We knew about a protected witness connected to Castellano financial crimes."

"Protected by whom?"

Mercer did not answer.

Dante stepped closer.

"If your people knew my father was alive and left him with Roman--"

"We did not know his identity."

"That is not better."

Mara stepped between them.

"Save the institutional rage for daylight."

I almost smiled despite everything.

We entered through the side door.

The church smelled like candle wax, dust, and cold stone.

No priest waited for us.

No guards appeared.

At the altar, one blue candle burned among dozens of white ones.

I stopped.

"There."

Dante followed my gaze.

The flame moved slightly though there was no draft.

I approached.

Beneath the candle sat a silver holder engraved with the Moretti crest.

My father's.

I lifted it.

A folded strip of paper was taped underneath.

E.M. - CRYPT 6.

Mercer looked toward the side aisle.

"There are family crypts below."

We descended a narrow staircase behind the sacristy.

The basement corridor was lined with stone niches and old brass plaques.

Crypt six had no name.

Only a keyhole.

I did not have a key.

Dante tried the real ring.

Nothing.

Vanessa examined the silver candle holder.

"The base twists."

She was right.

Inside was a thin brass key.

I looked at her.

"You are getting annoyingly good at my family's secrets."

"I had a difficult boyfriend."

For one second, we both laughed.

Then I put the key into the crypt door.

It opened.

Michael Vale sat inside.

Alive.

No wheelchair.

No restraints.

He stood leaning on a cane beside a small table.

Dante stopped in the doorway.

For years I had imagined what it would be like to see my father alive again.

I had never imagined watching someone else experience it.

Michael looked older than the man in Dante's childhood photographs.

His hair was white.

One side of his face still drooped.

But his eyes were sharp.

"You took your time," he said.

Dante made a sound that was half laugh and half broken breath.

"Dad."

Michael opened his arms.

Dante crossed the room.

He held his father so tightly Michael's cane fell to the floor.

No one looked away.

Some moments deserved witnesses.

When they separated, Dante touched his father's face like he needed proof it was solid.

"I buried you."

"I know."

"How?"

Michael looked toward Agent Mercer.

"Later."

Dante followed his gaze.

"You know him."

"Unfortunately."

Mercer gave a small nod.

"Mr. Vale."

"Agent Mercer."

Dante turned on Mercer.

"You lied."

Mercer answered calmly.

"I said we did not know the protected witness's identity."

"You clearly do."

"Now."

Michael raised one hand.

"Dante."

"Not now."

"Yes, now."

Michael's voice still carried authority despite the weakness.

"You have spent too much of your life attacking whoever is closest because Roman trained you to think anger is speed."

Dante went silent.

I wondered how many fathers could still make grown men feel twelve with one sentence.

Michael looked at me.

"Evelyn."

"You knew my father."

"He saved my life."

"And you paid him two million dollars."

Michael closed his eyes briefly.

"So Roman found that."

"He put it on television."

"Of course he did."

"What was it for?"

Michael sat carefully.

"Silence."

The word landed hard.

Dante looked at him.

"About what?"

Michael looked at Isabella's photograph on Dante's phone.

"About you."

Dante went still.

"Isabella is my mother."

"Yes."

"Vittorio is not my father."

"No."

Michael's eyes softened.

"I am."

Dante sat across from him.

"Why did she say Vittorio was?"

"Because Roman was listening."

"To the recording?"

"To everything."

Michael looked at me.

"Roman had Isabella wired for three days."

"She knew any message she sent would be intercepted."

"She gave him the lie he wanted."

"A secret older Castellano son."

Vanessa understood.

"As long as Roman thought Dante might be an heir, he needed him alive until he knew what documents existed."

Michael nodded.

"Exactly."

Dante leaned back.

"So my mother made me a target to keep me alive."

"Welcome to parenthood in our generation."

The bitterness in Michael's voice sounded like my father.

"The two million?"

I asked again.

"Vittorio discovered Isabella and I had a child."

"Enzo created a false paper trail suggesting the child had died."

"He demanded that I move money into Sofia's protection trust so there would be resources to keep Dante hidden if anything happened to us."

"Why label it payment for silence?"

Michael almost smiled.

"Because Enzo had a sense of humor when he was angry."

"He wrote it that way?"

"He said if Vittorio ever found the ledger, he wanted him to know silence had a price."

"The money was not for Enzo."

"No."

"Where did it go?"

"To the network that kept Sofia alive and later kept me alive."

"And the two hundred thousand he retained?"

"Legal fees and emergency cash for the same network."

Mara looked satisfied for exactly one second.

"Can you prove that?"

"Yes."

Michael tapped his cane against the floor.

"If Roman has not destroyed the trust statements."

Mercer spoke.

"We have copies."

Everyone looked at him.

He sighed.

"Federal investigation."

Mara smiled thinly.

"You are becoming more useful."

Michael looked at me again.

"Your father was trying to expose Roman."

"Did Roman kill him?"

Michael's face hardened.

"Roman ordered the brake work."

"Do you know that or believe it?"

"I heard him authorize it."

My throat tightened.

"Were you there?"

"On a call."

"Can you testify?"

"Yes."

The word was almost too simple.

Four years of grief.

Four years of Roman telling me the weather was bad, my father was tired, accidents happened.

One yes could not contain what it meant.

"Why did you not come forward?"

Michael looked at Dante.

"Because Roman had Claire's surviving files and proof of Dante's identity."

"He threatened Isabella."

"He threatened everyone who had helped Sofia."

"Then he had me taken."

Dante's voice lowered.

"How did he fake your death?"

Michael's expression went dark.

"A homeless man died in a warehouse fire."

"Roman's people altered the dental file."

"I was already sedated in Wisconsin when you identified him."

Dante stood and walked away.

I let him.

Some grief needed space before comfort became an insult.

Michael reached for a folder on the table.

"There is something else you need to know."

Of course there was.

He handed it to me.

Inside was a copy of Sofia's adoption decree.

Maria Moretti was not Vittorio Castellano's half-sister.

She was Sofia's adopted daughter.

No blood relation.

Luca had been wrong.

Roman had been wrong.

I had spent one day believing my marriage was even more grotesque than it was.

"Why would Roman think she was blood family?"

"Because Vittorio altered the family records after Sofia disappeared."

"He wanted Maria's inheritance to look like Castellano property."

Michael gave me a grim smile.

"Roman married you partly because he believed the lie his father created to steal from your mother."

I looked down at the papers.

There was something almost elegant about the stupidity of inherited greed.

Dante returned.

"Where is Isabella now?"

Michael's expression changed.

"Roman moved her after the call."

"Where?"

"I do not know."

Then footsteps sounded in the corridor.

Mercer's agents raised their weapons.

Luca appeared in the doorway with both hands up.

Blood stained the bandage beneath his shirt.

"Before anyone shoots me, I brought a gift."

Dante stared at him.

"You stole the ring."

Luca reached into his pocket.

He placed the original sapphire on the table.

"Borrowed."

I glared at him.

"Why?"

"Because Roman's men were watching the warehouse."

"I needed them to follow me instead of you."

"Did it work?"

Luca smiled tiredly.

"Mostly."

He pulled out a phone.

On the screen was a live video of Isabella sitting in the back seat of a moving car.

She was alone.

"I got her out."

Dante stepped closer.

"Where is she going?"

"Federal safe location."

Mercer looked surprised.

Luca smiled at him.

"Different federal people."

Then the church bells began ringing overhead.

Two in the morning.

No one had touched them.

Michael's face went white.

"Get out."

"Why?" I asked.

"Roman knows this place."

A deep explosion shook dust from the crypt ceiling.

The lights died.

Stone cracked somewhere above us.

Luca whispered,

May you like

"He knows now."
