Chapter 13 - The Price of Silence

I watched Roman accuse Dante of buying my father's silence on every television in the warehouse.

The same clip repeated until the words stopped sounding like language and became rhythm.

Two million dollars.

Payment for silence.

Dante Vale.

Enzo Moretti.

Roman had always understood that a short lie could beat a long truth simply because people remembered it better.

"Turn it off," I said.

No one moved.

"Turn it off."

Mara muted the screens.

The room became quiet except for the hum of computers.

Dante stood at the far end of the table.

He had not tried to defend himself since the ledger entry appeared.

That made me angrier.

"Tell me what the payment was for."

"I do not know exactly."

I stared at him.

"Your company sent my father two million dollars and you do not know why?"

"Vale Holdings sent it."

"You controlled Vale Holdings."

"My father still had signing authority then."

"The father you believed was dead."

"Yes."

"Convenient."

His jaw tightened.

"I know how it sounds."

"You keep saying that after facts you should have told me first."

Mara stepped between us verbally before anyone moved physically.

"The transfer left a paper trail."

"Good," I said.

"Follow it."

She already had.

The bank record showed the payment went from a Vale escrow account to Moretti Family Holdings.

Twenty minutes later, one million eight hundred thousand dollars left the Moretti account and entered a trust in the Cayman Islands.

The beneficiary name was hidden behind a numbered entity.

Two hundred thousand remained in my father's account.

Roman's press team had conveniently shown only the incoming transfer.

"Can you identify the trust beneficiary?" I asked.

Mara shook her head.

"Not quickly."

Dante looked at the transaction date.

"This was the week my father vanished."

"Two weeks after my father died," I said.

"Yes."

"So Michael may have made the payment after Enzo was already dead."

Mara nodded.

"Or someone using Michael's authority did."

"Roman?"

"Possible."

I hated that every answer had become possible instead of true.

Vanessa sat beside Judge Lane at the other end of the room.

She had been silent since the ledger opened.

Now she looked at the broken replica ring inside an evidence bag.

"The tracker had a microphone."

We all turned toward her.

The technician picked up the bag.

"What?"

"Roman told me once that his father put listening devices in cuff links."

Vanessa pointed at the setting.

"That black dot is too large for only a tracker."

The technician examined it under magnification.

His expression changed.

"She's right."

Dante crossed the room.

"Range?"

"Store-and-forward."

"It records locally and uploads when it gets a signal."

Mara swore.

I thought of every conversation near the broken ring before it went into the evidence bag.

At Astor Street.

In the van.

At the safe house before the shielding activated.

At the cemetery when the tracker was used as bait.

"How much did Roman hear?"

"We cannot know."

Vanessa looked sick.

"He may know about the real ring."

"He already does," I said.

"He may know where it is."

Mara's eyes moved toward the private safe built into the warehouse office wall.

We had put the original sapphire there two hours earlier.

Dante shook his head.

"Not anymore."

He opened the safe.

The ring was gone.

For one second, no one understood what we were seeing.

The velvet pouch lay empty.

The deed copies remained.

The memory card remained.

The ring did not.

Mara stared at the safe.

"Only four people had the code."

"Who?"

"Me."

She looked at Dante.

"Dante."

Then at me.

"You."

Then her gaze moved slowly to Luca's empty chair.

Of course.

"Luca."

Dante was already calling him.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

I felt something inside me settle rather than break.

"He took it."

"Probably," Dante said.

"Do not say probably."

"There is no camera inside the office."

"Why?"

"Because this was supposed to be secure."

I laughed without humor.

"I am beginning to hate that word."

Vanessa stood.

"Luca was at the safe house before we came here."

"He knew where the ring was moved."

Mara looked at the technician.

"Pull every exterior camera."

He did.

A recording from forty minutes earlier showed Luca leaving through a side door.

He wore a baseball cap and carried nothing visible.

His wounded shoulder was stiff.

He got into a gray sedan.

The plate was registered to a Castellano subsidiary.

"He went back to Roman," Judge Lane said.

Vanessa shook her head.

"Maybe."

Her father looked at her.

"You still defend people who use you."

She turned on him so quickly he recoiled.

"I learned from you."

The room went quiet.

Lane looked down.

Vanessa's eyes filled but remained dry.

"Do not make me comfort you because the truth hurts."

She walked away.

I watched her go and felt a strange recognition.

Maybe freedom began with refusing to manage the feelings of the people who had failed you.

Dante's phone rang.

Roman.

He answered on speaker.

"Where is Luca?"

Roman laughed.

"You lost him too?"

"Do you have the ring?"

"Which ring?"

I stepped closer.

"The one you have been trying to steal since before my wedding."

Roman went quiet.

"Evelyn."

"Where is your brother?"

"Not with me."

"I do not believe you."

"You never learned when to believe me."

"That may be the first honest thing you have said."

Roman breathed softly into the phone.

"Your father took two million from Vale."

"I saw."

"Still sitting beside Dante?"

"No."

That was technically true.

Dante stood three feet away.

Roman heard what he wanted.

"Good."

"Do not sound pleased."

"I am pleased whenever you finally see what I see."

"You see ownership."

"I see motives."

"Then explain yours."

"Come to the Drake at midnight."

My skin prickled.

Back to the ballroom.

Back to the scene he wanted to rewrite.

"No."

"You have not heard the offer."

"I spent four years hearing your offers."

"Michael Vale is alive."

Dante stopped breathing.

Roman continued.

"And unlike your father, he can still answer questions."

"Prove it."

A video request appeared.

I accepted.

Michael Vale sat in a wheelchair in a plain room.

The image was live.

I knew because Roman held up a tablet showing the current financial news ticker.

Michael was gaunt but alert.

One side of his face drooped slightly as if he had suffered a stroke.

Dante stepped into view before I could stop him.

"Dad."

Michael's eyes widened.

His lips moved.

No sound came at first.

Then,

"Dante."

The word was barely audible.

Dante gripped the edge of the desk.

Roman moved behind Michael.

"Midnight."

"Where is Isabella?" I asked.

Roman turned the camera.

Isabella sat in another chair.

She had a bruise along her jaw.

Her eyes found mine.

"Do not come," she said.

Roman struck the back of her chair hard enough to make her flinch.

Dante raised his voice.

"Touch her again and I will bury you."

Roman looked delighted.

"There he is."

"My older brother."

Dante's face went still.

Roman smiled.

"Mother finally told you."

Michael suddenly shook his head violently.

"No."

Roman looked down.

Michael forced the words through damaged speech.

"Not... brother."

Dante stared at him.

Roman's expression changed.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

Michael pushed himself upright in the wheelchair.

"My... son."

The call ended.

No one moved.

Dante stared at the black screen.

I looked at him.

"Isabella lied."

Mara whispered,

"Or Roman made her lie."

Dante's voice was almost calm.

"Why would she tell me Vittorio was my father?"

Vanessa answered from behind us.

"Because Roman kills enemies."

We turned.

She looked at the blank screen.

May you like

"But he keeps heirs alive until he knows what they can inherit."
