Chapter 5 - THE SECOND SET OF KEYS

Daniel moved Elena to another hotel before sunset.

Hale insisted.

Dana agreed.

The victim advocate arranged the reservation through a nonprofit network that did not use Elena's name.

Daniel hated leaving a place that had finally felt secure.

Elena understood why immediately.

"If Keene searched your plate, he can find the first hotel."

"Maybe."

"Stop saying maybe when you mean yes."

Daniel looked at her.

For the first time, there was irritation in her voice instead of fear.

He welcomed it.

"You're right."

Elena folded a new sweater into the overnight bag.

"I hate that they still control where we sleep."

Daniel zipped the bag.

"For now."

"And tomorrow?"

"Tomorrow we take something back."

Elena looked at him.

"What?"

"The truth."

The state investigator assigned to the case was Special Agent Nina Brooks.

She met them at Dana's office after dark.

Brooks was in her forties, wore no visible badge until introductions were complete, and spoke in short sentences that invited equally short answers.

She began with Elena.

"I know you've told parts of this story several times today."

Elena nodded.

"I need you to tell it again."

Daniel saw exhaustion move across Elena's face.

Brooks noticed too.

"We can stop at any time."

"I want to do it."

For ninety minutes, Elena described the months after Daniel deployed.

Victoria moved into their home two weeks after he left.

She said the arrangement would help Elena manage the business and house.

Ricardo arrived three weeks later.

At first, he claimed he was only staying for a few days.

Then he never left.

Victoria began criticizing Elena's spending.

Then her clothes.

Then her friends.

Then her sleep.

She told family members Elena was becoming unstable.

She told business employees Elena was overwhelmed.

She told Daniel during video calls that Elena was tired and emotional.

Then came the paperwork.

"Who first asked you to sign something?" Brooks asked.

"Victoria."

"What was it?"

"She said it was temporary authority for payroll."

"Did you read it?"

"I tried."

"Why couldn't you?"

Elena swallowed.

"Ricardo took the pages away."

"Did you sign?"

"The first time, yes."

"Voluntarily?"

Elena looked at Daniel before answering.

"I thought I was helping the business."

Brooks nodded.

"That is not the same question."

Elena looked confused.

"I mean you may have signed willingly without understanding what the document actually was."

"Yes."

"Later signatures?"

"No."

"What changed?"

"I saw money missing."

"From where?"

"Business accounts."

"Then what happened?"

Elena explained the threats.

The confiscated phone.

The changed passwords.

The tracker.

The locked doors.

The shove into the counter.

The urgent care visit.

Deputy Keene sitting in the living room.

Brooks never interrupted with emotion.

But when Elena described Keene telling her that families fight, Brooks stopped writing for two full seconds.

"Did Keene ever touch you?"

"No."

"Threaten you?"

"Not directly."

"Did he ever say anything about Daniel?"

Elena nodded.

"He said deployed husbands sometimes come home to surprises."

Daniel's face hardened.

Brooks looked at him.

"Mr. Alvarez, I need you not to react while she is giving her statement."

Daniel nodded once.

"Understood."

Elena continued.

One night, Victoria had placed divorce papers in front of her and demanded a signature.

Elena refused.

Ricardo grabbed her wrist.

Victoria told her Daniel already wanted the divorce.

"She said he had met someone overseas," Elena whispered.

Daniel felt physically ill.

"I didn't believe her at first."

Brooks asked, "What changed?"

Elena's eyes filled.

"She showed me messages."

Daniel leaned forward.

"What messages?"

Brooks raised a hand.

"Let her answer."

Elena looked at Daniel.

"Messages from your account."

"To who?"

"A woman."

"What woman?"

"I don't know."

"What did they say?"

Elena closed her eyes.

"That you couldn't wait to come home and end things with me."

Daniel stared at her.

"I never sent anything like that."

"I know that now."

"Elena, I swear to you."

"I know."

Brooks waited until they were quiet.

"Do you still have screenshots?"

Elena shook her head.

"Victoria showed them on her tablet."

Brooks wrote another note.

"Which messaging service?"

Elena named it.

Daniel frowned.

"I haven't used that account in years."

"Can you still access it?" Brooks asked.

"Maybe."

"Don't try yet."

Daniel looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because I may want records preserved before anyone gets notified of a login."

Brooks moved on.

"Did Victoria ever have access to Daniel's email?"

Elena hesitated.

"Not that I know of."

Then she remembered something.

"Wait."

Everyone looked at her.

"Before Daniel left, Victoria offered to help with our taxes."

Daniel frowned.

"You gave her documents?"

"You did."

He thought back.

Two weeks before deployment, he had dropped a folder at Victoria's house.

Tax returns.

Business statements.

Copies of identification.

A list of account numbers for their accountant.

Enough information to make identity theft much easier.

Daniel swore under his breath.

"She planned this before I left."

Brooks did not confirm it.

"It's possible."

"She bought the prepaid phone with my card before deployment."

"That supports planning."

"She created RCV eleven days after I left."

"That supports planning too."

"What else do you need?"

Brooks looked at him steadily.

"Evidence that survives defense lawyers."

Daniel leaned back.

"Fair enough."

Brooks closed the interview with one final question for Elena.

"Is there anything you haven't told anyone because you're afraid it will sound strange?"

Elena froze.

Daniel noticed immediately.

Brooks did too.

"Take your time."

Elena looked at her hands.

"There was a key."

"What key?"

"A second set."

Daniel frowned.

"To the house?"

"To everything."

Elena turned toward him.

"I found a ring of keys in Ricardo's room."

"When?"

"September."

"What was on it?"

"House keys."

"That's not strange."

"There was a key to your gun safe."

Daniel's face changed.

His firearms were secured in a biometric safe with a backup mechanical lock.

Only Daniel had possessed the backup key.

Or so he believed.

"Where did he get that?"

"I don't know."

Brooks asked, "Anything else?"

"A storage unit key."

Daniel looked at Elena.

"We don't have a storage unit."

"I know."

Brooks leaned forward.

"Did you photograph the key ring?"

Elena nodded.

"Where are the photos?"

"On an email draft."

Daniel looked at her.

"You had email access?"

"For one night."

"How?"

"Ricardo forgot to disable the guest Wi-Fi."

A tiny, tired smile touched Elena's face.

"I used the smart television browser."

Luis, who had stayed for part of the interview, let out a surprised laugh.

"That's my girl."

Elena looked almost embarrassed.

Brooks did not smile, but her eyes softened.

"Can you access that email now?"

"Yes."

Brooks connected a clean laptop through a secure hotspot.

Elena logged in.

The draft was still there.

Three blurry photographs showed a heavy key ring on Ricardo's desk.

Brooks enlarged the clearest image.

One brass key had a plastic tag.

The writing was barely visible.

Daniel leaned closer.

"Can you sharpen that?"

Brooks saved a copy.

"We'll have imaging look at it."

Elena pointed at another object in the photograph.

"That's the storage key."

It had a stamped number.

B-417.

Brooks wrote it down.

Daniel stared at the image.

"There are dozens of storage facilities in the city."

"We'll check them."

Dana entered the room carrying a fresh printout.

Her face was tight.

"The judge granted temporary relief."

Daniel stood.

"Assets frozen?"

"The known ones."

Elena exhaled.

"And the divorce case?"

"Stayed pending fraud review."

Daniel nodded.

It was the first meaningful victory they had received all day.

Then Dana held up a second page.

"But Victoria and Ricardo just filed a response."

"Already?"

"They have counsel."

"Pike?"

"No."

Dana looked at Elena.

"A new lawyer."

Daniel took the page.

The filing accused Elena of stealing company funds, assaulting Victoria, and fabricating injuries to manipulate Daniel.

Daniel's eyes moved down the page.

Then stopped.

Attached was a photograph.

It showed Victoria sitting in their kitchen with a dark bruise beneath one eye.

The date stamp was three weeks earlier.

Under the photograph was a sworn statement from Deputy Thomas Keene.

He claimed he had personally witnessed Elena strike Victoria.

Elena stared at the page.

"That's a lie."

Brooks did not react.

"Can you prove it?"

Elena's face changed.

"Maybe."

"How?"

Elena looked at Daniel.

"Because that night Victoria said she fell in the garden."

Daniel remembered something.

A motion alert from the backyard camera had been emailed to him while he was deployed.

He had ignored it.

He pulled out his phone.

Brooks stopped him.

"Don't access anything that could alert them."

Daniel lowered the phone.

Brooks asked, "Do you know where the camera recordings were stored?"

"Cloud account."

"Whose account?"

Daniel answered.

"Mine."

Brooks nodded.

"Good."

Then her phone buzzed.

She read the message once.

Then again.

"What is it?" Dana asked.

Brooks looked at Daniel.

"Imaging enhanced the photo of the key ring."

She turned her phone toward them.

The plastic tag on the brass key was now readable.

It contained three words.

May you like

Daniel's blood ran cold.

ARMORY - PERSONAL LOCKER.
