Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE COMPANY

Daniel drove for twenty minutes before he spoke.

He took side streets, doubled back twice, and watched the mirrors more than the road ahead.

Elena noticed.

"Do you think they're following us?"

"I don't know."

"Ricardo followed me once."

Daniel's hands tightened on the steering wheel.

"When?"

"August."

"Where were you going?"

"A bank."

Daniel glanced at her.

"Why?"

"Because I found a loan against the house."

"A loan?"

Elena nodded.

"One hundred eighty thousand dollars."

Daniel almost missed the next turn.

"Our house was paid off."

"I know."

"Who signed?"

Elena looked down.

"You did."

Daniel understood what she meant.

Someone had signed his name.

"What happened at the bank?"

"I never made it inside."

"Ricardo stopped you?"

"He pulled in behind me."

Her breathing changed.

"He said Victoria knew exactly where I was because the car had a tracker."

Daniel slowed.

"Where is the tracker?"

"I never found it."

At the next gas station, Daniel pulled beneath a bright canopy and parked beside the air pump.

He crouched near the rear bumper and ran his hand along the frame.

Within thirty seconds, he found a black magnetic box behind the left rear wheel.

He did not remove it.

Instead, he photographed it.

Then he took a small multitool from the glove compartment and removed the battery.

Elena watched from inside the truck.

Her face had gone white.

Daniel returned to the driver's seat.

"He told the truth about that part."

Elena stared ahead.

"I kept thinking I was imagining things."

"You weren't."

"Victoria said I was paranoid."

Daniel started the engine.

"People who need you to doubt yourself usually have a reason."

Captain Hale instructed them to meet at a twenty-four-hour diner near the interstate.

When they arrived, Hale was already seated in a back booth wearing jeans, a gray sweatshirt, and an expression Daniel had only seen before difficult briefings.

He stood when Elena approached.

"Mrs. Alvarez?"

Elena hesitated before shaking his hand.

"Elena."

"Marcus Hale."

He nodded toward Daniel.

"Your husband has been annoying me for nine years."

Daniel almost smiled.

Elena managed the faintest one.

It vanished when Hale opened a laptop.

"I need to say something first."

He looked at Daniel.

"I'm not your criminal lawyer."

"Understood."

"I'm not your wife's lawyer either."

Elena nodded.

"But I can help you get to people who are."

Hale turned the laptop toward them.

On the screen was a state corporate registry entry for RCV Holdings LLC.

Ricardo's name appeared as manager.

Victoria Alvarez appeared as the sole member.

Daniel read the filing date.

It had been created eleven days after his deployment began.

"What does RCV stand for?" Hale asked.

Elena answered quietly.

"Ricardo Carlos Victoria."

Daniel looked at her.

"You knew?"

"I saw it on a folder in your mother's room."

Hale clicked another tab.

"The company now holds an assignment interest in your family business, a deed of trust connected to your house, and two brokerage transfer agreements."

Daniel stared at the screen.

"How much?"

"Enough that you need a forensic accountant."

"Give me a number."

Hale was silent for a moment.

"Based on what I can see publicly, more than seven hundred thousand dollars moved or became encumbered."

Elena made a small sound.

Daniel felt the diner become strangely quiet despite the clatter of dishes around them.

"Seven hundred thousand?"

"Potentially more."

Hale folded his hands.

"That's the financial side."

He looked at Elena.

"The physical side is more urgent."

Elena stiffened.

"I don't want to go to a hospital."

Daniel turned toward her.

"Why?"

"Because the last time I did, Victoria came."

Hale frowned.

"Explain."

"In August, my ribs hurt so badly I couldn't breathe."

Elena's voice dropped.

"I went to urgent care."

"Alone?"

"Yes."

"How did Victoria know?"

"I still don't know."

Daniel thought about the tracker.

Hale thought about it too.

"Did she enter the exam room?"

"She told the nurse she was my mother."

"Did you correct her?"

Elena shook her head.

"Victoria stood behind the nurse and stared at me."

"What did you tell the doctor?"

"That I fell."

Daniel closed his eyes for one second.

Hale did not react with surprise.

"Today will be different."

Elena looked at him.

"How?"

"Because we choose the facility."

"And if she shows up?"

"Security removes her."

Hale leaned closer.

"You are not going back to that house today."

Elena glanced at Daniel.

"What about my clothes?"

"Replace them."

"My grandmother's jewelry is there."

Daniel answered before Hale could.

"We'll get it later with police present."

Elena's eyes widened.

"Police?"

"Yes."

Fear returned immediately.

"No."

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Elena."

"You don't understand."

"Then tell me."

She looked around the diner.

"Ricardo has friends in the sheriff's department."

Hale's expression changed.

"Names?"

"I only heard first names."

"Which ones?"

"Tom and Jerry."

Daniel stared at her.

Despite everything, Hale blinked.

"Seriously?"

Elena almost laughed, but it became a shaky breath.

"That's what Victoria called them."

Hale typed something into his phone.

"We'll avoid county contacts for now."

Daniel leaned closer.

"Who do we call?"

"City police if the assault occurred in city limits."

"It did."

"And because of the forged documents, we may have state-level financial crimes."

Hale looked at Elena.

"But the first step is medical documentation."

An hour later, they entered a private hospital through an emergency entrance.

Daniel stayed beside Elena until a nurse explained that the examination would be easier if Elena could speak privately.

Daniel immediately stepped out.

He waited in the hallway with Hale.

His phone began vibrating.

Victoria.

He ignored it.

She called again.

Then Ricardo.

Then Victoria.

Then a text message appeared.

"Where did you take her?"

Daniel showed Hale.

Hale's eyes narrowed.

"Don't answer."

A second message arrived.

"Daniel, your wife is not mentally well."

A third appeared.

"You have no idea what she's capable of."

Daniel felt sick.

Hale said nothing.

Then a fourth message came from Ricardo.

"Bro, call me before she ruins the family."

Daniel took screenshots.

He backed them up.

Then he turned his phone face down.

Forty minutes later, a physician asked Daniel to join Elena.

Elena sat upright beneath a hospital blanket.

Her eyes were red.

The doctor was middle-aged, calm, and precise.

"Mr. Alvarez, your wife has multiple injuries in different stages of healing."

Daniel's throat tightened.

"How many?"

"Enough that we need to document them carefully."

The doctor looked at Elena before continuing.

"There is also evidence consistent with a prior rib fracture that has begun healing."

Daniel turned toward Elena.

She stared at the floor.

"When?" he asked.

"August," she whispered.

The urgent care visit.

The fall that never happened.

The doctor continued.

"We've asked a forensic nurse examiner to assist."

Elena nodded.

"I agreed."

Daniel reached for her hand but stopped before touching it.

Elena noticed.

Slowly, she placed her hand in his.

It was the first time she had chosen contact since he came home.

Daniel held it gently.

A hospital social worker arrived a few minutes later.

She explained emergency protective orders, shelter options, victim advocacy, and law enforcement reporting.

Elena listened without speaking.

Then the social worker asked a question Daniel did not expect.

"Do you believe your husband participated in any of the abuse?"

Elena's head snapped up.

"No."

"Did he know about it?"

"He was deployed."

"Did anyone use his position, identity, or absence to threaten you?"

Elena looked at Daniel.

Then she said, "Yes."

The room became very still.

"What did they say?" the social worker asked.

Elena's fingers tightened around Daniel's hand.

"Victoria said Daniel had signed papers giving her authority over everything while he was gone."

"What else?"

"She said if I called him, she would tell his command I was unstable."

Daniel stared at her.

"She said what?"

Elena's eyes filled.

"She said she had already spoken to someone at your base."

Daniel felt the old uneasiness return.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

Hale, standing near the door, suddenly looked very serious.

"Daniel."

"What?"

"Did anyone from command ever contact you about Elena?"

Daniel thought back.

There had been one message in July.

A routine welfare note, he had assumed.

His senior chief had mentioned that a family member called the unit asking about emergency procedures.

Daniel had never asked who.

At the time, Elena had said everything was fine.

Now he understood why.

Hale stepped into the hallway to make a call.

Ten minutes later, he returned.

"Someone did contact your command."

Daniel stood.

"Who?"

"A woman identifying herself as Elena."

Elena turned pale.

"I never called them."

Hale's jaw tightened.

"I know."

"What did she say?"

"That you had become unstable and controlling before deployment."

Daniel felt the room tilt.

"Anything else?"

Hale hesitated.

"She asked what would happen to your pay and benefits if you were investigated."

Elena's hand flew to her mouth.

Daniel stared at the wall.

The theft had not started after he left.

It had been planned.

The company.

The fake signatures.

The call to his command.

The tracker.

The camera.

None of it was improvisation.

Hale's phone buzzed.

He looked down.

Then he looked at Daniel.

"There's more."

Daniel waited.

"The number used to call your command was registered to a prepaid phone."

"So?"

Hale turned the screen around.

May you like

The prepaid phone had been purchased with Daniel's credit card.

Two weeks before deployment.
