Chapter 11 - THE LAWYER WHO WANTED OUT

Calvin Pike did not ask for immunity.

At least not at first.

He asked for protection.

Brooks relayed that detail to Dana while Daniel and Elena listened from the protected apartment.

"Protection from Ricardo?" Daniel asked.

"That is what he claims."

"Do you believe him?"

Brooks gave the answer Daniel had come to expect.

"Belief is not evidence."

Dana almost smiled.

"You're becoming predictable."

"Good."

Pike agreed to meet investigators at a state office forty miles away.

He arrived with his own criminal defense attorney and carried no files.

For three hours, he said almost nothing useful.

Then Brooks showed him the copy-shop photograph.

According to her later account, Pike stopped talking entirely.

She showed him the printer tracking evidence.

Then the remote access logs from his office network.

Then copies of the notarized documents.

Finally, she placed the photograph of Elena's bruises on the table.

Pike asked for a private conversation with his lawyer.

Twenty minutes later, he came back and changed his story.

He admitted forming RCV Holdings.

He admitted preparing transfer documents.

He admitted printing the goodbye letter.

But he claimed Victoria created the plan.

"Of course he did," Daniel said.

Brooks's voice came through Dana's speakerphone.

"He says Victoria told him Elena intended to leave Daniel and wanted paperwork prepared privately."

Elena stared at the wall.

"And he believed that?"

"He says he did initially."

Dana asked, "When did he stop believing it?"

"According to Pike, after Ricardo began asking questions about how long a missing spouse had to be gone before financial affairs could be handled without them."

Daniel felt cold.

"What kind of questions?"

Brooks read from her notes.

"Access to jointly owned property."

"Business voting rights."

"Life insurance procedures."

Elena's face changed.

Daniel stood.

"Life insurance?"

"Sit down," Dana said.

Daniel remained standing.

Brooks continued.

"Pike claims he refused to advise on insurance."

"Claims," Daniel said.

"Correct."

"What else?"

"He says Victoria brought him the first ownership consent Elena signed."

Elena closed her eyes.

"He says she represented that Elena had voluntarily agreed to restructure the business."

"Then what?" Dana asked.

"Pike drafted later transfer documents."

"With Daniel's signature?"

"He says Ricardo provided signed pages."

Daniel laughed without humor.

"And Pike notarized them without me present."

Brooks paused.

"Yes."

"That's not an accident."

"No."

The blunt agreement surprised him.

Dana leaned closer to the phone.

"Did Pike admit knowing they were forged?"

"Not directly."

"Convenient."

"Very."

Pike claimed he believed Daniel had signed documents overseas and sent scanned copies home.

When asked why he notarized them as if Daniel were physically present, Pike stopped answering.

His attorney ended that portion of the interview.

But before leaving, Pike offered one more detail.

A meeting was scheduled for the coming Tuesday.

The same Tuesday printed on Elena's fake goodbye letter.

The same Tuesday on the bus ticket.

The same Tuesday on the apartment lease.

The meeting was supposed to take place at Pike's office at 10:00 a.m.

Victoria, Ricardo, and Deputy Keene were expected to attend.

Pike said the purpose was to finalize documents connected to Elena's "departure."

"What documents?" Daniel asked.

Brooks answered slowly.

"He says he doesn't know."

Daniel scoffed.

"He printed the goodbye letter."

"I know."

"He prepared transfers."

"I know."

"And now he suddenly doesn't know what Tuesday was?"

"I said that too."

Elena spoke for the first time in several minutes.

"Did he say where Ricardo is?"

"No."

"Victoria?"

"At the house."

"Keene?"

Brooks hesitated.

"Missing from his residence."

Daniel looked at Dana.

"So Ricardo and Keene disappear at the same time."

"That is concerning," Dana said.

"Concerning?"

"Would you prefer screaming?"

Daniel sat.

"No."

Dana continued.

"Then let people whose job is to find them do that job."

Later that afternoon, Brooks sent another update.

Internal affairs had obtained Keene's department phone records.

During the six months of Daniel's deployment, Keene had exchanged more than four hundred calls and messages with Ricardo.

He had also accessed vehicle records tied to Elena eleven times.

Nine of those searches had no documented law-enforcement purpose.

"Can they arrest him?" Elena asked.

"There are steps," Brooks said.

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"Of course there are."

"But yes," Brooks added.

"We are moving toward charges."

The next revelation came from the forensic accountant.

His name was Aaron Bell, and he had spent the day reconstructing two years of transactions.

Bell joined a video conference that evening.

His screen displayed a diagram of arrows connecting accounts.

"North Bridge Consulting received one hundred ninety-two thousand dollars over twenty-six months," he said.

Daniel stared.

"From our business?"

"Mostly."

"Mostly?"

"Some came from a home equity line."

Elena looked horrified.

"The loan."

"Correct."

Bell zoomed in.

"Funds then moved through two additional accounts before reaching RCV Holdings."

"Why move them around?" Elena asked.

"To make tracing harder."

"Did Victoria spend it?"

"Some."

"On what?"

Bell looked at his notes.

"Jewelry."

Daniel remembered the necklace Victoria wore the morning they left.

"Travel."

"Vehicle payments."

"Cash withdrawals."

Then Bell paused.

"And premiums."

Daniel felt the room change.

"What premiums?"

"Insurance."

Elena went still.

Bell shared another document.

A life insurance policy had been opened four months before Daniel deployed.

Insured: Elena Alvarez.

Benefit: one million dollars.

Owner: a trust Daniel had never heard of.

Trustee: Victoria Alvarez.

Daniel stood so abruptly the kitchen chair fell backward.

"No."

Dana picked it up.

"Daniel."

"She insured Elena?"

Bell continued carefully.

"The application contains an electronic signature attributed to Elena."

Elena stared at the screen.

"I never applied for that."

"And a witness signature attributed to Daniel."

"I never signed it," Daniel said.

Bell nodded.

"The premium payments came from North Bridge."

The room fell silent.

Daniel remembered Pike's statement.

Questions about what happened to property if a spouse disappeared.

Questions about life insurance.

The fake goodbye letter.

The bus ticket.

Elena's personal items packed away.

"Tuesday," Elena whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

"They were going to make me disappear Tuesday."

Dana did not contradict her.

"We still do not know what they intended."

"A million-dollar policy."

"I know."

"A fake goodbye letter."

"I know."

"My things in storage."

"I know."

Elena's voice rose for the first time.

"Then stop telling me we don't know."

Dana went quiet.

Elena stood, shaking.

"Everyone keeps saying maybe."

"Maybe they forged this."

"Maybe they planned that."

"Maybe Ricardo hurt me."

Her eyes filled.

"I lived there."

"I know what they were doing."

Daniel moved toward her, then stopped.

Elena pressed both hands against the counter.

"I need someone to believe me before they find a body."

The room went completely still.

Dana's expression changed.

"I believe you were abused."

Elena looked at her.

"I believe you were coerced."

"I believe documents were falsified."

"And I believe the evidence creates a serious concern that someone was preparing to explain your disappearance."

Dana took a breath.

"I use careful words because careful words survive courtrooms."

Elena wiped her face.

Dana continued.

"But careful is not the same as doubtful."

Elena sat down slowly.

Daniel picked up the fallen chair.

No one spoke for a minute.

Then Bell cleared his throat.

"There is one more transaction."

Daniel almost laughed.

"There always is."

Bell shared a bank image.

A cashier's check for seventy-five thousand dollars had been issued two days earlier.

Purchaser: RCV Holdings.

Payee: Thomas Keene.

Elena stared.

"They paid him?"

Bell nodded.

"It appears so."

Dana leaned closer.

"Memo line?"

Bell enlarged the image.

Two words were typed there.
