Chapter 13 - THE LEAK

The evacuation took eleven minutes.
Daniel and Elena were moved through a service corridor into an unmarked vehicle.
They carried only the clothes they were wearing and a small evidence bag Dana refused to let out of her sight.
No one told them where they were going.
For once, Daniel was grateful.
If he did not know, he could not accidentally reveal it.
Elena sat beside him in the back seat, rigid and silent.
"Four people," she whispered.
Daniel nodded.
"Brooks said four people."
"Yes."
"Who?"
"She wouldn't say."
Elena looked out the window.
"One of them sold us."
Daniel wanted to disagree.
He could not.
The new location was not a hotel or apartment.
It was a secure residential wing attached to a state training facility.
The rooms were plain.
The doors were controlled.
Armed security monitored the entrance.
Daniel slept for the first time in three days.
He woke after two hours to voices in the hallway.
Brooks entered with Dana.
Neither looked rested.
"We identified the leak," Brooks said.
Elena sat upright.
"Who?"
Brooks did not answer immediately.
She placed a photograph on the table.
It showed a woman in her thirties with dark hair and a hospital badge.
Elena recognized her.
"The social worker."
Daniel remembered her too.
She had interviewed Elena at the hospital.
Brooks nodded.
"Her name is Cynthia Moran."
Dana added, "And she is Keene's cousin."
Elena's face emptied.
"She knew?"
"We don't know what she knew," Brooks said.
"But she accessed your protected placement information outside her role."
Daniel's anger rose.
"She gave it to Keene."
"Phone records show a call to him eleven minutes after she opened the record."
"That's enough for me."
"It is enough for an investigation."
Elena stared at the photograph.
"I told her everything."
Brooks nodded.
"I know."
"She looked me in the eye and told me I was safe."
No one tried to defend Moran.
Elena's voice cracked.
"How many people am I supposed to trust before one of them doesn't betray me?"
Daniel sat beside her.
"You don't have to trust everyone."
"I trusted your mother."
"I know."
"I trusted Ricardo."
"I know."
"I trusted a deputy."
"I know."
"I trusted a hospital social worker."
Daniel had no answer that could make the pattern less cruel.
Brooks spoke gently.
"Moran has been removed from access."
Elena laughed bitterly.
"Great."
"She is being interviewed."
"Will she get to call it a mistake?"
Brooks did not flinch.
"Not if the evidence shows it wasn't."
Dana handed Elena a new victim advocate contact.
"This person does not have access to your location."
Elena looked at the card but did not take it immediately.
Finally, she did.
"One more layer," Dana said.
Elena remembered the phrase.
"Layers."
"Yes."
Brooks moved to the next development.
The map found at the warehouse had been printed before Daniel and Elena arrived at the protected apartment.
That meant the leak occurred almost immediately.
Moran admitted telling Keene the general location but claimed she believed he was conducting official law-enforcement follow-up.
Keene had told her Elena was a suspect in financial crimes.
Moran knew he was related by family connection but did not disclose that relationship.
"So she says she was fooled," Daniel said.
"Yes."
"Do you believe her?"
Brooks looked tired.
"I believe she violated policy and possibly law."
"Fair."
More importantly, Moran's phone records placed Keene near the warehouse two nights earlier.
A text from him to Moran read, "Need them moved before Tuesday."
Elena stared at the words.
"Moved where?"
"Unknown," Brooks said.
Another message from Moran asked, "Is she dangerous?"
Keene replied, "Only if she talks."
Daniel's hands curled into fists.
Dana looked at him.
"Hands."
Daniel opened them.
Elena noticed and almost smiled.
"She's training you."
"Apparently."
Brooks continued.
Internal affairs had issued an arrest warrant for Keene related to unlawful database access, false statements, and evidence tampering.
Ricardo was now wanted for unauthorized secured-facility access, suspected firearm theft, fraud, and assault allegations under investigation.
Victoria had not been arrested.
"Why not?" Elena asked.
Dana answered.
"Because prosecutors are building."
Elena looked frustrated.
"She is standing in our house giving interviews."
"And every interview gives us more statements to compare against records."
That afternoon, the first major break came from the encrypted laptop found in storage.
Investigators accessed it using a recovered password fragment from a notebook in Ricardo's room.
The laptop contained folders named by initials.
D.A.
E.A.
V.A.
T.K.
C.P.
Daniel recognized everyone except the structure.
Each folder held copies of identification, account details, personal schedules, and draft documents.
Elena's folder was the largest.
Inside were multiple versions of the goodbye letter.
There were draft divorce petitions.
There were fake apartment applications.
There were photographs of Elena entering the bank, urgent care, grocery stores, and Luis's office.
Daniel had to walk away from the screen.
Elena remained.
She forced herself to look at every image.
"Who took these?" she asked.
Brooks pointed to file properties.
Some photographs came from phones.
Others appeared to be screenshots from surveillance cameras.
One image showed Elena sitting alone in her car outside the bank.
It had been taken from another vehicle.
"Ricardo," she said.
Brooks marked it.
Another image showed her at urgent care.
"Victoria."
"How do you know?"
"Reflection."
Elena pointed at the glass doors.
A faint figure held a phone.
The woman wore the same large sunglasses Victoria favored.
Brooks zoomed in.
Useful.
Then they found a video.
The file name was KITCHEN_0811.
Elena stopped breathing.
"August eleventh."
Daniel knew the date from her receipt.
The rib injury.
Brooks asked whether Elena wanted to leave the room.
"No."
"You do not have to watch."
"I said no."
Brooks played it.
The camera angle came from above the kitchen doorway.
The same hidden security system Ricardo installed.
Elena appeared near the counter.
Victoria stood across from her holding papers.
Ricardo entered from the side.
There was no audio at first.
Then voices became audible.
Victoria said, "Sign it."
Elena said, "No."
Ricardo moved closer.
Elena backed away.
"Daniel didn't approve this."
Victoria laughed.
"Daniel approved whatever I tell you he approved."
Daniel felt ice move through him.
On the screen, Elena tried to leave.
Ricardo grabbed her arm.
She pulled free.
He shoved her.
Her ribs struck the counter.
Daniel heard Elena beside him inhale sharply.
On the video, she collapsed.
Victoria did not help her.
She picked up the papers from the floor.
Then another man walked into frame.
Deputy Thomas Keene.
He looked at Elena on the floor.
He looked at Ricardo.
Then he said, "You need to keep this family stuff quieter."
Daniel could not speak.
The video continued.
Victoria asked, "Is she going to call anyone?"
Keene answered, "Not if she's smart."
Ricardo laughed.
Then Keene noticed the camera.
He stared directly at it.
"Why is this recording?"
Ricardo reached upward.
The video ended.
No one in the room moved.
Elena was crying silently.
Daniel sat beside her but did not touch her until she reached for him.
Brooks stopped the playback.
"This changes the case."
Dana's voice was tight.
"Yes."
"Can you arrest Victoria now?" Elena asked.
Brooks stood.
"I'm calling the prosecutor now."
For the first time, Elena looked relieved.
It lasted less than five minutes.
Brooks returned from the hallway.
Her expression had changed.
"What?" Daniel asked.
"Units went to the house."
"And?"
"Victoria is gone."
Elena stood.
"Gone where?"
"Unknown."
"Her car?"
"Still there."
"Phone?"
"Inside the house."
Daniel felt a familiar coldness.
Brooks continued.
"The back door was open."
"Any sign of forced entry?"
"No."

Then she added the detail that changed the room.
"There was blood on the kitchen floor."
