Chapter 15 - THE WRONG MAN IN HANDCUFFS

Ricardo disappeared into six hundred acres of wooded farmland.
State police established a perimeter.
Dogs searched creek beds and abandoned structures.
Helicopters circled overhead.
Roadblocks appeared across three counties.
By afternoon, there was still no sign of him.
Victoria was taken to a hospital for minor injuries from the crash.
She asked for an attorney before answering questions.
She claimed Ricardo had forced her to flee.
Then investigators showed her the gas station video.
According to Brooks, Victoria changed the story.
She said she had been afraid to resist him in public.
Then investigators showed her footage of Victoria handing Ricardo cash at the counter.
She stopped talking.
Daniel felt no satisfaction.
He had imagined for years that the truth would feel clean.
It did not.
It felt like discovering rot behind a wall.
Every piece removed revealed more damage.
Elena had a different reaction.
"She's finally somewhere she can't control the room," she said.
Dana looked at her.
"A hospital room with an attorney still gives her some control."
"Not my room."
That distinction mattered.
By evening, prosecutors approved charges against Victoria for conspiracy to commit fraud, identity theft, witness intimidation, and coercion-related offenses tied to Elena's statement and video evidence.
Additional charges remained possible.
Victoria was transferred from the hospital to custody.
The news spread immediately.
Cameras gathered outside the courthouse.
Reporters replayed her tearful press conference beside footage of officers escorting her into a secure vehicle.
Dana told Daniel and Elena not to celebrate.
"Why would we celebrate?" Daniel asked.
"Because relief can look like revenge on camera."
"We're not on camera."
"Good."
The next morning, that changed.
Daniel received orders to report to the base legal office.
Dana insisted on coming.
Hale met them outside.
His expression was grim.
"This is not about the family case directly."
Daniel stopped.
"What is it about?"
"The armory access."
"Ricardo used my credentials."
"I know."
"There's a photograph."
"I know."
"Then what?"
Hale looked at Dana.
"A second audit found something."
They entered a secure conference room.
An investigator placed three photographs on the table.
The first showed Daniel's locker.
The second showed the empty storage slot for the missing pistol.
The third showed a small packet recovered behind a locker panel.
Daniel stared.
"What is that?"
The investigator answered.
"Prescription opioids."
Daniel blinked.
"Not mine."
"The packet was concealed inside your assigned locker space."
"I don't use them."
"Your medical records confirm no current prescription."
Daniel looked at Dana.
"So I'm being framed again."
The investigator did not react.
"We are determining when the packet was placed there."
"Ricardo."
"Possibly."
Daniel almost laughed.
Brooks had infected everyone with that word.
The investigator continued.
"There is also an issue with your badge access logs."
"We already know Ricardo entered."
"Yes."
"Then what issue?"
"A third unauthorized entry occurred six weeks ago."
Daniel frowned.
"The vendor only sent us two snapshots."
"This event was recorded differently."
The investigator slid over a printout.
Someone entered the outer room using Daniel's badge credential and correct PIN.
No image was captured because the camera system was offline for maintenance.
"I was overseas."
"Confirmed."
"So what are you asking me?"
"Who knew your PIN?"
Daniel opened his mouth.
Then stopped.
He had told one person years earlier.
Not Elena.
Ricardo.
The memory came back painfully.
They had been at a family barbecue.
Daniel joked that Ricardo would never remember the number because it matched the score of an old high school championship game.
Ricardo laughed and repeated it.
Daniel had forgotten the conversation.
Ricardo had not.
"My brother knew," Daniel said.
The investigator wrote it down.
"Anyone else?"
"Not that I remember."
Dana leaned forward.
"Is Daniel suspected of misconduct?"
The investigator answered carefully.
"At present, we are treating him as both the owner of compromised credentials and a potential victim of identity misuse."
"That is not the same as a suspect."
"Correct."
Daniel exhaled.
Then the door opened.
Two military security officers entered.
The lead investigator looked surprised.
One officer spoke.
"Daniel Alvarez?"
"Yes."
"Please stand."
Dana immediately rose.
"On what basis?"
The officer held up a document.
"Civilian arrest warrant."
Daniel stared.
"For what?"
The officer's expression was unreadable.
"Aggravated assault and kidnapping."
Dana took the warrant.
Her face changed.
"Victim?"
The officer answered.
"Thomas Keene."
Daniel almost laughed from disbelief.
"I've never touched Keene."
"The warrant was issued this morning."
"By whom?"
Dana read the signature.
A county magistrate.
The supporting affidavit came from a detective Daniel did not recognize.
It alleged that blood from Keene was found in Daniel's home.
It alleged Daniel threatened Keene after returning from deployment.
It alleged a witness saw Daniel's truck near the warehouse where Keene's bloody shirt was found.
Daniel looked at Dana.
"My truck was with me."
"Not the entire night."
"What?"
Dana turned to him.
"The first hotel had valet parking."
Daniel remembered handing over his keys.
The world suddenly shifted.
His truck had been outside his control for nearly forty minutes.
"Witness?" Daniel asked.
Dana scanned the affidavit.
Then her face went pale.
"Cynthia Moran."
Elena's former hospital social worker.
The leak.
Keene's cousin.
According to the affidavit, Moran claimed Daniel had threatened Keene at the hospital and later boasted he would "take care of him."
Daniel stared.
"She wasn't even there when I learned his name."
Dana nodded.
"I know."
The officer stepped closer.
"Sir, I need your hands where I can see them."
Daniel looked at Hale.
Hale gave a tiny nod.
Do not fight the process.
Daniel stood.
Dana spoke quickly.
"He is surrendering voluntarily."
The officer nodded.
"Understood."
Daniel turned around.
Cold metal closed around his wrists.
He thought of Victoria's plan.
Day 5: protective order if needed.
He thought of the missing gun.
The planted pills.
The false witness.
The unstable-soldier narrative.
Even after Victoria's arrest, the trap was still operating.
Somebody had activated another piece.
As Daniel was escorted through the hallway, his phone rang in Dana's hand.
Brooks.
Dana answered.
"He's being arrested."
She listened.
Then stopped walking.
"Say that again."
Daniel turned as far as the officers allowed.
Dana's face had gone white.
"Where?"
Another pause.
"Is he alive?"
Daniel felt his stomach drop.
Dana ended the call and looked at him.
"They found Keene."
Daniel stared.
"Where?"
"In a motel outside Richmond."
"Alive?"
"Yes."
"Then why am I being arrested for kidnapping him?"
May you like
Dana's expression hardened.
"Because the warrant was signed thirty-seven minutes before Keene walked into a police station and surrendered."
