Chapter 5: Respect Can't Be Bought

The Chairwoman slowly walked toward the ballroom entrance.

Before leaving, she turned back one final time.

"When I first built this company," she said, "I spent my first year serving food in our own events."

"Not because I needed the job."

"Because I wanted to know whether my employees were treated with dignity."

She looked across the silent room.

"The people carrying trays, cleaning floors, and opening doors deserve the same respect as the people signing contracts."

"No amount of wealth changes that."

Many guests quietly applauded.

Some servers fought back tears.

Several executives personally walked over to apologize to every member of the service staff.

Richard and his wife stood alone in the middle of the ballroom.

No one defended them.

No one spoke to them.

As security escorted the couple toward the exit, the Chairwoman thanked each waiter and waitress by name before leaving through the grand doors.

The ballroom remained silent long after she was gone.

That night, the most powerful lesson had nothing to do with money.

It was about character.
