No one in the ballroom dared to breathe.
The senior executive remained on one knee, his head bowed toward the waitress while hundreds of guests stared in stunned silence.
The arrogant businessman, Richard Lawson, forced out a nervous laugh.
"There must be some mistake."
His voice cracked.
"This woman is a waitress."
The executive slowly stood, his face hardening.
"No," he said firmly.
"She's the Chairwoman of Ashford Holdings."
A wave of whispers swept across the ballroom.
Ashford Holdings.
The corporation that owned the entire skyscraper.
The luxury hotel.
The conference center.
Every office inside the tower.
Richard felt the blood drain from his face.
His wife instinctively stepped backward.
The woman they had mocked wasn't employed there.
She owned everything around them.
The Chairwoman calmly removed her stained apron and handed it to another server.
"I like seeing how people treat those they believe have no power," she said quietly.
