Chapter 4 – A Debt That Could Never Be Repaid

Days later, Grant attended Thomas Callahan's grave for the first time.

Rain fell quietly across the cemetery.

Maddie stood beside him holding Leo's tiny hand.

She placed the faded crayon drawing against the headstone.

"Daddy..."

"We found Mr. Grant."

Grant removed the old letter from his coat pocket.

"I should have found you first, my friend."

"I was too late."

He knelt beside the grave.

"I can't give you back the years you lost."

"I can't erase what your children suffered."

"But I swear..."

"They will never face another day alone."

Maddie reached over and slipped her small hand into his.

It was the first time she had willingly reached for an adult since the airport.

Grant quietly closed his fingers around hers.

Not as a businessman.

May you like

Not as a benefactor.

As family.
