Chapter 2 – The Backpack That Changed Everything
Airport staff escorted Maddie and Leo into a quiet family assistance room.
Grant refused to leave.
While Officer Greene prepared paperwork, a social worker carefully opened Maddie's faded green backpack to identify the children.
Inside were only a few belongings.
Thomas Callahan's worn construction jacket.
A small crayon drawing of a family holding hands.
Two diapers.
An almost empty baby bottle.
And beneath everything...
An old brown envelope.
Across the front, written in faded blue ink, were four words.
For Grant Whitmore Only.
Everyone looked toward the businessman.
Grant frowned.
"I've never seen that before."
Officer Greene handed him the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Grant recognized the signature instantly.
Thomas Callahan.
His hands began to shake.
Twenty-five years earlier...
Thomas had been his closest friend.
The man who had pulled Grant from the wreckage of a collapsing construction site.
The man who had nearly died saving his life.
Grant had promised to help him afterward.
Instead...
His rapidly growing business had consumed him.
They lost contact.
The letter was dated three months before Thomas's death.
Grant... if you're reading this, then I failed to protect my children. I never blamed you for forgetting me. But if fate ever places Maddie and Leo in front of you... please don't let them grow up believing the world abandoned them.
Grant couldn't finish reading.
His vision blurred.

He had spent twenty-five years believing he owed Thomas nothing.
The letter reminded him that the debt had never disappeared.
