Chapter 1 – The Promise Beneath Gate B17
Grant Whitmore had built an empire by trusting numbers.
Numbers never lied.
People did.
He had negotiated billion-dollar mergers without hesitation, walked away from failing companies without regret, and learned long ago that compassion was rarely profitable.
Yet something about the little girl beneath the departure board refused to let him keep walking.
He stopped only a few feet away.
The baby was crying harder now.
The girl rocked him gently despite her own trembling arms.
Grant crouched until he was at eye level.
"Hello."
Maddie looked up immediately, instinctively pulling Leo closer.
Her eyes held no panic.
Only caution.
"What's your name?"
"...Maddie."
"And who's this?"
"My brother."
Grant glanced toward the departure screen.
"Where are your parents?"
Maddie hesitated.
"Our mommy said to wait."
Grant looked around the crowded gate.
"No one came back?"
She slowly shook her head.
"The plane left."
Grant's chest tightened.
Airport security had already begun preparing the gate for the next departure.
People continued walking past as if the children didn't exist.
Grant quietly pressed a button on his phone.
"Richard."
His longtime assistant answered immediately.
"Yes, sir?"
"I need airport security at Gate B17."
There was a pause.
"Is something wrong?"
Grant looked back at Maddie.
"Two children have been abandoned."
—
Within minutes, two airport police officers arrived.
Officer Melissa Greene knelt beside Maddie with practiced gentleness.
"Sweetheart, can you tell me your father's name?"
Maddie smiled for the first time.
"My daddy is Thomas Callahan."
"Do you know where he is?"
"He works."
"What kind of work?"
"He builds things."
Grant watched every answer carefully.
Nothing sounded rehearsed.
Nothing sounded invented.
Everything sounded heartbreakingly honest.
Officer Greene searched the national database.
Five seconds later her expression changed.
She looked toward her partner.
"We've got a problem."
"What?"
"Thomas Callahan..."
She swallowed.
"...was reported deceased eight months ago."
The smile disappeared from Maddie's face.
"No."
She shook her head firmly.
"Daddy promised he'd come home."
No one had the courage to answer.
Grant quietly looked away.
