THE PRICE OF SEAT 2A / Chapter 16 / 20

Chapter 16 - THE INSURANCE FILE

The so-called insurance file reached us through formal document exchange, not through a midnight break-in.

Maya insisted that our evidence be obtained in ways that would withstand scrutiny.

Inside were financial projections, personal records, and draft statements designed to depict me as unstable.

One draft described a history of emotional outbursts.

Another claimed I had voluntarily supported Bennett Commercial Realty as part of a succession plan.

I had never seen either document.

At the bottom of one page, someone had written: USE IF SHE REFUSES.

I stared at those four words.

My family had prepared a story to deploy against me long before I refused Chloe my seat.

I had imagined the airport incident as the beginning of our conflict.

It was only the moment I finally saw it.

The file also contained an email from Martin warning Richard that a lender might examine the identity documents used for the guarantee.

Richard replied that Olivia could be managed.

I read that phrase aloud to Maya.

Managed.

Not consulted.

Not respected.

Managed.

The handwriting examiner's preliminary report arrived later that day.

It identified substantial inconsistencies between my authenticated signatures and the signatures on several disputed documents.

The expert declined to draw conclusions beyond the material available.

That restraint mattered.

It made the findings more credible, not less.

The detectives were now reviewing potential identity misuse and financial misconduct separately from the airport assault.

No one promised me immediate arrests.

I learned how much patience justice could require.

That night, my father called from an unfamiliar number.

I answered only because Maya was with me and the call could be recorded lawfully after she confirmed the applicable requirements.

His first words were almost tender.

Olivia, I miss you.

I said nothing.

I made you strong, he continued.

You should remember that.

You made me afraid, I answered.

There is a difference.

He exhaled.

Then he offered a bargain.

If I dropped the estate dispute, he would arrange to have the online stories removed and the guarantee problem resolved.

I asked why he could control articles supposedly written by independent journalists.

He did not answer.

Instead, he said that my grandmother's recording could ruin my mother's life.

Then he spoke a sentence I would remember forever.

You don't understand, Olivia.

Your mother didn't just help with the documents.

May you like

She was the one who started it.
