Chapter 14 - THE RECORDING

The detective would not raid my father's office because Chloe remembered seeing a flash drive.

He explained that evidence had to be obtained through lawful procedures.

Maya told me that frustration was not a substitute for a warrant.

I understood, even as every hour felt dangerous.

Chloe's attorney arranged for her to give a fuller statement.

She also provided messages in which Richard instructed her to retrieve the silver key from my apartment.

The messages did not explain everything.

But they contradicted his claim that Chloe had acted alone.

Two days later, Martin's office produced records under a preservation request and related legal process.

Among them was an audio file bearing Rose's name.

It had been copied to a secure drive, and the parties disputed who owned it.

Maya obtained an authorized copy through counsel.

We listened together in her conference room.

At first there was only static and the clink of dishes.

Then my grandmother spoke.

Richard, I will not sign away the scholarship fund.

My father's voice answered, sharper than I remembered it.

It's a business arrangement, Mother.

You have no right to treat my money as yours, Rose said.

A chair scraped.

Diane entered the conversation, telling Rose to calm down.

Martin said something about documents being finalized before the next banking day.

Rose demanded to see them.

The recording ended abruptly.

It did not prove the signatures were forged.

It did establish that Rose objected to the arrangement she was later said to have approved.

I sat silently for a long time.

I hadn't heard her voice since the funeral.

I thought the sound would comfort me.

Instead, it made me furious that she had been alone with people who treated her questions like disobedience.

Maya placed the recording beside the ledger in our growing chronology.

We had begun to assemble the story of what happened.

Then Denise called.

A reporter had sent my employer questions about whether I used confidential client data to finance my family vacations.

The allegation was false.

But it meant Martin's threats were becoming public.

I agreed with Denise that the company should respond only to verified facts.

That evening a new headline appeared online.

CONSULTANT ACCUSED OF FAMILY FINANCIAL MANIPULATION.

Beneath it was a photograph of me at LAX, taken seconds after my father struck me.

And the article claimed its anonymous source had access to my private banking records.
