Chapter 13 - THE LEDGER IN THE WALL

Evelyn Marsh agreed to visit Rose's old property with us after we obtained permission from its current occupant.

The house had passed through several hands since my grandmother's death.

A young couple now lived there with a toddler and a golden retriever.

They had no role in our family's dispute, and I was careful to treat them as people rather than obstacles.

Evelyn remembered Rose keeping a small ledger in a concealed compartment behind the library shelving.

I remembered that room.

I remembered sitting on the floor while Rose read aloud and rain struck the windows.

The current owners allowed us to inspect the shelf with a contractor present.

The compartment was still there.

Inside lay nothing but dust and a small brass clasp.

I felt foolish for hoping a secret would wait eleven years untouched.

Then the owner mentioned that the previous resident had left a box of old hardware in the garage.

Among the spare hinges and curtain rods was a narrow leather ledger.

Its first pages contained gardening expenses.

Later pages recorded loans to Richard, dates of repayment promises, and notes of meetings with Martin.

The entries were in Rose's unmistakable handwriting.

One line read: Diane says the money is safe, but will not show me where.

Another read: Richard called me selfish for asking about my own house.

I stood in the garage, feeling the past rearrange itself around me.

Rose had been treated the way I was being treated now.

The difference was that she had tried to leave a record.

Maya photographed and inventoried the ledger carefully.

Its authenticity would need evaluation, and I knew better than to treat it as a magical solution.

But for the first time, the pattern had a human voice.

That night Chloe called from a number I didn't recognize.

Her voice was flat.

I talked to the detective, she said.

I told him who went into your apartment.

Did you tell him why?

Yes.

I closed my eyes.

Thank you.

Don't thank me, she snapped.

I didn't do it for you.

She hesitated.

I did it because Dad told Martin I was disposable.

I waited.

Chloe breathed hard into the phone.

There's a safe in Dad's office, she whispered.

And I saw him put something inside it after the airport.

What?
