Chapter 9 - THE CHILD WHO SHOULD NOT EXIST

Clara Thorne had been reported missing before she ever met my father, or so the official story said.
Now an anonymous message claimed she had borne a child.
Ward obtained medical records from a shuttered private clinic in Connecticut.
The clinic's files were incomplete, but one delivery record survived in an offsite archive.
Clara had delivered a daughter under an assumed name twenty-seven years earlier.
The paperwork had been signed by Margaret Thorne.
Her signature appeared in the place reserved for a parent or legal guardian.
“Twenty-seven years,” I repeated.
Khloe was twenty-six according to her documents.
Eleanor Bell was twenty-five.
Nothing matched cleanly.
“That is deliberate,” Ward said.
“They're altering ages as well as identities.”
The detective's theory was uglier than I expected.
Silas's family had used false identities to move young women between homes, clinics, and trusts.
Each identity had a financial purpose.
Some allowed them to receive insurance proceeds.
Others created fictitious beneficiaries for estate assets.
Real women were trapped inside paperwork designed to make them disappear.
Harrison found a photograph of Clara holding an infant.
On the back, Clara had written ‘Rose, six weeks old.’
I studied her face for a long time.
She looked exhausted, but she smiled at the baby with a tenderness I recognized from my father's old photographs of me.
“Did my father know about Rose?” I asked.
Ward did not answer immediately.
Then she displayed a letter extracted from a destroyed backup drive.
Clara had written to Arthur asking him to protect a child if anything happened to her.
My father replied that he would do everything he could.
The message predated my marriage to Silas by years.
For the first time I understood why my father had distrusted him before we met.
He had known the Thorne family history.
He had kept it secret, presumably to protect someone.
I felt a sharp, irrational betrayal.
My father had let me marry a man whose first wife had begged him for help.
Then I read the final line of his response.
‘If I reveal what I know, they will kill the children first.’
Children, plural.
That same afternoon, a sealed document arrived for Harrison.
It contained an adoption order issued twenty-six years earlier.
The adoptive father's name was Arthur Vance.
The child's original name had been Rose Thorne.

And the adopted name was Evelyn Vance.
