Chapter 19 - MY FATHER'S FINAL WARNING

I listened to my father's final recording inside Harrison's office after sunset.

His voice sounded tired but unmistakably alive.

“Evelyn, if this reaches you, there is something I should have told you years ago.”

I pressed my hand against my mouth.

“I knew Silas was dangerous before he met you.”

Arthur explained that Clara had approached him with evidence of fraudulent trusts, concealed beneficiaries, and women held under false identities.

He had quietly financed attempts to get them to safety.

Every attempted rescue leaked to the Thornes.

He began to suspect that a member of his own board was feeding them information.

“Then you met Silas,” Arthur said.

“I wanted to forbid the relationship, but that would have made you distrust me more and trust him more.”

His voice shook.

“That was my failure.”

I paused the recording.

I had spent months demanding an explanation from a man who could never again answer me.

Now his voice was filling the room with answers that hurt.

The recording continued.

Arthur had arranged to remove Clara and Rose from danger, but his first extraction had been compromised.

He believed Ellison had learned of it through corporate security.

He decided to make himself appear cooperative with the criminals while quietly collecting enough evidence for a federal case.

Then he discovered Silas intended to use my fingerprints and accounts to frame me for his death.

“I planned to tell you everything the next morning,” Arthur whispered.

“I ran out of time.”

The final minutes contained a warning about an emergency extraction service.

Its operators had offered to rescue witnesses, then delivered them directly back to Margaret.

The service had a distinctive emblem: a silver swallow.

I remembered seeing it on the badge of the gray-suited visitor at the prison.

Ward immediately reexamined every purported witness-protection arrangement.

Most were legitimate.

One recent transportation order for Khloe had been routed through a contractor using the swallow emblem.

Khloe was not dead in a plane crash.

The aircraft had landed, and she had been taken to a private obstetric clinic.

Ward dispatched a federal medical team.

They found her alive and in labor.

Her daughter was born while the agents secured the building.

For the first time in months, I felt something close to relief.

Then Khloe asked to speak with me.

Her voice was weak but steady.

“Evelyn, I need to tell you why Silas chose me.”

I waited.

“He didn't choose me as his mistress.”

A baby cried beside her.

May you like

“He chose me because I knew where the missing children were sent.”
