Chapter 15 - THE VOICE IN THE MACHINE

The recording terrified me because the imitation was almost flawless.

It held the flat, measured quality my voice acquired when I was furious.

It pronounced Arthur's first name the way I did only in private.

But Ward's audio specialist found unnatural joins in the breaths.

The voicemail had been synthesized from years of company earnings calls and family videos.

Someone had built a false Evelyn to carry out crimes while the real Evelyn was being watched and blamed.

For the first time, the technical evidence explained how Silas had assembled a case so quickly.

He had access to my accounts, devices, signature, contacts, and voice.

He had treated our marriage as an intelligence operation.

Harrison looked ill when he realized how long it must have taken.

“He wasn't improvising,” he said.

“No,” I replied.

“He was preparing to erase me.”

The court finally granted a limited evidentiary hearing on the conviction.

Price was ordered to testify about the voicemail, the undisclosed medical-annex visit, and the compromised evidence.

The day before his appearance, Price disappeared.

His car was found beside a river with its doors open.

His phone remained on the seat.

It contained one unsent message addressed to Ward.

‘I was wrong about who killed Arthur.’

Ward would not tell me what else they recovered.

Her silence suggested an active lead.

Meanwhile, Rose was located alive at a disused radio station near the Canadian border.

She had escaped her captors by convincing a guard she could unlock the financial archive.

When the guard left her alone with a computer, she sent her location through a decades-old emergency address Clara had taught her to memorize.

Rose was brought back under heavy protection.

She insisted on speaking to me before giving a complete statement.

“I know who took your father from the house,” she said during our next secure call.

“Tell Ward.”

“I will, but you need to understand why.”

Her hands trembled.

“Arthur was going to give me evidence that would end the trust scheme.”

“Did you meet him?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“On the night he was poisoned.”

I felt the floor vanish beneath me.

“And then?”

Rose swallowed.

May you like

“He told me he'd found Clara alive.”
