Chapter 2 – The Man Who Never Lost

The ambulance disappeared behind screaming sirens, leaving streaks of blood across the courthouse steps.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

Vanessa Kensington stood frozen where she had pushed Khloe only moments earlier. Her expensive heels suddenly felt too heavy to lift.

Richard finally took one hesitant step toward the stairs.

"Harrison... it wasn't supposed to—"

"Stop."

One word.

Quiet.

Controlled.

Yet every person standing there instinctively obeyed.

Harrison Cole slowly removed his blood-soaked suit jacket and handed it to a deputy without taking his eyes off Richard.

"I wouldn't take another step if I were you."

Richard swallowed.

"Harrison, this was an accident."

"No."

Harrison's voice never rose.

"It became a crime the moment you stood there and watched."

Within minutes, courthouse security officers arrived carrying tablet computers.

"I want every surveillance camera."

"Every hallway."

"Every entrance."

"Every exterior angle."

"And every phone video anyone recorded."

He turned toward the crowd.

"If you filmed what happened today, my office will protect every witness."

People who had remained silent seconds earlier immediately raised their phones.

Vanessa felt her stomach twist.

She had forgotten one thing.

Courthouses were covered with cameras.

At Montgomery General Hospital...

Doctors rushed Khloe straight into emergency surgery.

Outside the operating room, Harrison sat alone.

His hands were still stained with his sister's blood.

A nurse quietly approached.

"Mr. Cole..."

"The baby's heartbeat is weak."

"But we're still trying."

For the first time in years, Harrison closed his eyes.

Not to pray.

To remember.

Twenty-four years earlier...

A ten-year-old Harrison had promised his dying mother he would always protect his little sister.

No matter what.

He had never broken a promise.

He wasn't about to start now.

Meanwhile...

Vanessa called her attorney over and over.

Every call went unanswered.

Then another.

And another.

Finally, her assistant texted.

Every law firm in Philadelphia just declined your case.

She frowned.

Impossible.

She dialed another attorney.

Straight to voicemail.

A third.

Rejected.

A fourth.

Rejected again.

Finally, one elderly lawyer answered.

"Ms. Kensington..."

"I've spent forty years defending impossible cases."

"But I don't stand across from Harrison Cole."

The line went dead.

Vanessa slowly lowered the phone.

For the first time...

She understood fear.

That evening...

Richard arrived at the hospital carrying flowers.

A sheriff's deputy stopped him before he reached the elevator.

"Richard Harrington?"

"Yes."

"You've been served."

Richard stared at the thick envelope.

Inside were emergency protective orders...

A petition for divorce filed on Khloe's behalf...

And notice that Harrison Cole had requested a criminal investigation into everyone involved.

Richard looked toward the operating room doors.

He suddenly realized...

He hadn't lost his company yet.

May you like

He hadn't lost his fortune yet.

But he had already lost his wife.
