Chapter 7 - The Confession Vanessa Wanted

Sophia read the message twice because the first time her mind refused to accept it.
Rosa's wrists were bound to the arms of a metal chair.
A bare bulb hung behind her.
The wall was unfinished brick.
There was a dark stain on the concrete floor near her shoes.
Sophia enlarged the photograph.
Rosa's eyes were open.
She was frightened, but she appeared conscious.
"Dante."
He took the phone from her hand.
His face changed instantly.
Enzo moved beside him.
Vanessa watched from across the table.
Carlo's attention sharpened.
"What is it?" Elena demanded.
Dante ignored the room.
"Enzo, east office."
Sophia caught his sleeve.
"No."
He looked at her.
"The message says I have until midnight."
"You are not confessing to something you didn't do."
"If I don't, they hurt Rosa."
"If you do, they learn they can control you by taking anyone you care about."
Sophia stared at him.
"That is easy for you to say when she was taken because of me."
Dante's expression hardened.
"She was taken because someone chose to take her."
"And that someone is targeting me."
"Which is not the same thing as this being your fault."
Sophia hated how calm he sounded.
"What would you do if that were Elena in the photograph?"
Dante went silent.
That silence gave Sophia her answer.
She took the phone back.
"Exactly."
Vanessa stood slowly.
"Perhaps we should all stop pretending this dinner can continue."
Sophia looked at her.
"You seem remarkably calm."
Vanessa's face went blank.
"I have no idea what is happening."
"Rosa was kidnapped."
A few guests gasped.
Vanessa's eyes widened convincingly.
"What?"
"Someone wants me to confess to stealing your necklace."
Vanessa glanced at her father.
Carlo looked genuinely surprised.
Sophia noticed.
That frightened her in a different way.
If Carlo had not expected the threat, then either Vanessa had acted without him or someone else was moving pieces neither family controlled.
Dante addressed the room.
"Dinner is over."
Nobody argued.
Guests began leaving under the watch of security while Enzo collected names and checked phones where legally possible.
Vanessa remained beside Carlo.
Dante walked directly to her.
"Your phone."
Her eyes flashed.
"Excuse me?"
"Give Enzo your phone."
"No."
"Then leave."
Vanessa stared at him.
"You are choosing her over me in front of one hundred and sixty people."
Dante's voice remained low.
"I am choosing the truth over a performance."
Her face reddened.
"You think I kidnapped Rosa?"
"I think you manipulated Anthony."
"He came willingly."
"You planted a story in his mouth."
"He took five thousand dollars to say what he already believed."
Sophia felt something twist in her stomach.
Vanessa looked at her.
"Your father thinks you are chasing Dante too."
"My father thinks slot machines are retirement plans."
A corner of Enzo's mouth moved.
Vanessa ignored him.
"You have been in this house sixteen days and already my fiance is defending you against my family."
Sophia stepped closer.
"Then maybe your problem is with your fiance."
Dante's eyes flicked toward her.
Vanessa's smile turned vicious.
"Oh, it will be."
She removed her phone from her purse and handed it to Enzo.
"Search everything."
Then she looked at Dante.
"When you find nothing, I expect an apology."
"If I find nothing, you will get the truth."
"That is not what I asked."
"I know."
Vanessa walked out with Carlo.
Sophia watched the doors close behind them.
"She gave up her phone too easily."
Enzo nodded.
"I was thinking the same thing."
Dante looked at the photograph of Rosa again.
"Find the room."
For the next two hours, the Moretti house transformed into a command center.
Enzo's team analyzed the image metadata.
There was none.
They examined the brick, the chair, the electrical wiring, the floor, and the shape of a steel beam barely visible behind Rosa.
Nothing was unique enough to identify the location.
Sophia sat at the kitchen island staring at the clock.
10:14 p.m.
10:37 p.m.
10:52 p.m.
Every minute felt like a betrayal.
Elena came to sit beside her.
"Eat something."
"No."
"You will be useless if you collapse."
"I am already useless."
Elena took Sophia's hand.
"Do not say that."
"She disappeared after using your computer to frame me."
"Because someone threatened her family."
"We don't know that."
"I do."
Elena's certainty made Sophia look at her.
"Rosa has worked for me eighteen years."
"She once drove through a snowstorm at three in the morning because Dante had pneumonia in college."
Dante, standing near the doorway, looked embarrassed.
Elena continued.
"She sat beside me through chemotherapy."
Sophia's head turned.
"You had cancer?"
"Briefly."
"There is nothing brief about cancer."
"It was if you complained efficiently."
Despite everything, Sophia smiled.
Then the clock changed to 11:03.
Her smile disappeared.
Dante came closer.
"We will find her."
"You don't know that."
"No."
His honesty hurt.
"But I know confessing will not guarantee her safety."
Sophia looked at the secure phone.
The message had included instructions.
Record a video.
State that she had stolen the Genovese emerald because she needed money.
State that Dante had no knowledge of the theft.
Send it to an encrypted address before midnight.
The demand was designed to do more than humiliate Sophia.
It separated Dante from her.
It made her look greedy.
It destroyed the reason anyone might believe the earlier debt setup had been a frame.
Whoever planned it understood narrative.
That meant Vanessa.
Or someone who knew exactly what Vanessa wanted.
At 11:18, Enzo entered the kitchen.
"We found something."
Everyone turned.
He placed an enlarged printout on the island.
"Reflection in the metal chair leg."
Sophia leaned closer.
A tiny inverted shape appeared in the reflection.
Blue and white.
"What is that?"
"A sign."
Enzo rotated the image and enhanced it.
Only part of the lettering was visible.
...ERRA COLD STORAGE.
Dante looked up.
"Sierra?"
Enzo shook his head.
"There are six cold-storage companies in the region ending with erra."
"Check Genovese properties."
"Already did."
"Nothing direct."
Sophia stared at the letters.
Her mind moved unexpectedly to her grandmother.
Terra.
The Sicilian word for land.
Then she remembered something Vanessa had said at dinner two days earlier while discussing wedding vendors.
Her father's family had once owned Terra Mare Imports.
Sophia looked at Dante.
"Terra Mare."
He frowned.
"What?"
"Carlo's old import company."
Dante's expression changed.
Enzo was already typing.
"There was a Terra Cold Storage subsidiary in Red Hook."
"Closed eight years ago."
"Who owns the building now?"
Enzo looked at the screen.
"Mercer Holdings."
Sophia remembered the name from the Lucky Ace.
Paul Mercer.
The attorney who had handled the false loan guarantee.
Dante grabbed his coat.
"Let's go."
Sophia stood.
"I'm coming."
"No."
She pointed at the clock.
"We are not doing this again."
Dante looked ready to argue.
Elena interrupted.
"Take her."
Both of them looked at her.
"Mama."
"If you leave her here, she will follow in a taxi."
Sophia nodded.
"Correct."
Dante muttered something in Italian that Sophia was fairly certain Elena had taught him not to say around women.
They left at 11:31.
The SUV moved through Manhattan faster than Sophia believed traffic laws allowed.
Two other vehicles followed.
Enzo coordinated with a private security team already moving toward Red Hook.
Sophia watched the clock on the dashboard.
11:42.
11:47.
11:51.
Then the secure phone vibrated.
A new message appeared.
Nine minutes.
Dante looked at her.
"Do not answer."
Sophia said nothing.
At 11:54, the SUV turned onto an industrial street near the waterfront.
Dark warehouses stretched along both sides.
Enzo's team reported movement inside the old Terra building.
Dante reached for the door handle.
Sophia grabbed his arm.
"You cannot walk into an ambush because of me."
His eyes met hers.
"This is not because of you."
"Then why are you here?"
For a second, neither moved.
Dante's answer came quietly.
"Because Rosa is mine to protect."
Sophia released his arm.
The wording was possessive.
The meaning was not.
He meant responsibility.
Family.
The same thing he had offered Sophia without saying it.
Enzo opened the door.
"We have three minutes."
Dante and the security team entered the warehouse through a side access point.
Sophia was ordered to remain in the SUV.
She lasted forty seconds.
Then she saw a second-floor light flicker.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Her grandmother had used the same pattern from an apartment window when Sophia was little.
Three flashes meant come here.
Sophia opened the car door.
The driver reached for her.
"Miss Rossi."
"Rosa is upstairs."
"Mr. Moretti said -"
"Tell him I am saving him time."
She ran toward the side entrance.
By the time Dante found her on the second floor, Sophia was standing outside a locked office.
"What are you doing?"
"The light flashed three times."
"You could have been seen."
"So could Rosa."
A faint sound came through the door.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
Enzo broke the lock.
Rosa sat inside.
Alive.
Her wrists were tied, but no one else was in the room.
Sophia rushed toward her.
Rosa began crying.
"I'm sorry."
Sophia knelt beside her.
"You have nothing to apologize for."
Rosa shook her head violently.
"Yes, I do."
Dante crouched in front of her.
"Who did this?"
Rosa looked terrified.
"He said he would take my grandsons."
"Who?"
She swallowed.
"Mr. Mercer."
Dante's face turned cold.
"Paul Mercer?"
Rosa nodded.
"He made me use Mrs. Moretti's computer."
"Did Vanessa know?"
Rosa shook her head.
"I never saw Miss Genovese."
Sophia stared at her.
That did not clear Vanessa, but it complicated everything.
Dante looked toward Enzo.
"Find Mercer."
Enzo touched his earpiece.
Then his expression changed.
"Boss."
"What?"
"Mercer's car just entered your property in Manhattan."
Dante stood.
Sophia felt her stomach drop.
May you like
Elena was still at the mansion.
And they had left her there with only half the usual security team.
